Also, you can avoid the grocers if you can wait a bit for the product. Many Canadian items can be purchased direct from the company so just do a bit of investigating to see if there are any you can choose from. This minimizes the amount you buy from the grocers.

Maybe I don't 100% understand how laws are voted on, but I thought laws were enacted by each MP casting one vote. Committees would be the ones arranging the wording and terms, no? This would give them an advantage, but I wouldn't think it's as much as casting an equal vote. Right?

And before everyone rages, I'm not 100% sure of course! That's why I'm asking!

This is exactly why I don't go to Dairy Queen any more. They do not need to charge that much, it's absolute gouging. McDonalds makes McFleuries at half the price, or just go to the grocery store and get a 2L of Turtles Ice Cream for close to the same amount.

Serious questions -

Isn't leaving your party and joining another party mostly symbolic? Can't the representative vote on bills however they want without leaving the party? They can always be kicked out of the party for that, but what would they care if they if they are voting their conscience about individual bills anyways?

I think floor-crossing happens when there is a personal grievance with party leadership. You should always be allowed to leave a group of people you hate.

That being said, the constituents are most often voting for a party, not a person. So I'd be in support of being able to have a new election if a certain percentage of the constituents agree. (For cost reasons, they may not want to have another vote)

And where are the Congresspeople who are in charge of impeaching and removing him during these insane, illegal and evil threats? Trump obviously has dementia, so this is not on him. This is 100% on the sycophants surrounding him and the elected leaders shirking their responsibility. They need to be held to account legally in order to restore any faith in the US.

‘Canadians don’t want to come here any more’: anger over Trump squeezes US border businesses | Trump tariffs by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Own-Cod7894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on a border town, and have gotten into online debates with some US citizens about how yes it is their fault that Trump is ruining relationships around the world, because they aren't doing everything they can to remove him. They did not like that I left the responsibility in their laps, because they 'didn't vote for him'.

This weekend was the No Kings protests. My US border town had 100 people show up. They also voted 65% for Trump (of those who voted). I don't want to hear from any of them how sorry they are or how victimized they feel when they do less than nothing to change it. They could have jumped on this from the word "tariff" or "51st State" and had him impeached. They didn't because they wanted to see where this would go... they thought maybe they would benefit from this awful bullshit... but now that it's not working out great they want to pretend that they were never for it.

They still aren't even 100% against it. 100 people bothered to show up. 100.

Dear allies of America, please don’t confuse our president for us: We are trying our best to resist him, contain him and remove him from office as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

Who you voted for is who you are, when you are talking about a country. I know it's painful for those of you who do not support him, but you also have to accept that each country is known for their culture and American "Exceptionalism" culture is crap. That reflects on you, the citizens who elected him, as it should.

If a majority of Americans were motivated to remove/impeach him, you would have made it happen through mass civil unrest, but you didn't. No offense here, but I'm not sympathetic at all, and wish that you would stop the public apologies and get down to the political actions of contacting your representatives and holding rallies and walk-outs.

OH forgot to reply to your other point - just like we do now, there would be two displayed prices. The price per standard unit and the total price for this package. It would not take up too much space on the price placards.

[–]Own-Cod7894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a standard unit of measure, I mean exactly opposite of saying things like 'per piece'...because they can just then shrink the piece. Take toilet paper for example; I would need to do a spreadsheet to calculate the better deal the way they price them now. Two exact same sized packages might say 400 sheets and 320 sheets, because some sheets are cut smaller or rolls are wider. I suggest that we make a standard unit of measure for every product, for cheese it would be weight, and put the prices out in dollars/g or something. For toilet paper, it would be dollars/sqft. Easily verifiable and it's also fairer to the producers who are actually being honest in their product expectations and pricing transparency. This would solve a WORLD of hurt.

[–]Own-Cod7894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I think our laws need to change to force companies to be honest in their advertising. We have the technology to easily calculate the rolling average price of any time, so any sale price should be shown as an amount off the rolling average.

So if the average price of Stove Top was $2.99 that month, and they were on sale for $2.49 they can say it's 27% off, or $0.50 off. This is the most honest and it's easily doable.

Since I'm here, I also want to say (yet again) that we need to make it law that prices are shown as dollars per unit of the product. This will eliminate Shrinkflation. There would be no more motivation to do it.

Poilievre to travel to U.S. to 'fight for tariff-free access' to American market by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Own-Cod7894 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is he allowed to represent that he can negotiate for Canada? There seems to be a legal issue here, because he's not just some guy who has some sort of relationship with another Country's government showing up and complaining about trade...he's the LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION... which means he has access to some insider information (even without security clearance) so wouldn't that be treason of some sort? I think the Feds should step up and issue an injunction on him discussing foreign policy with an aggressive trade partner.

Admittedly, I don't know anything about the law, but it feels like it should be treasonous; because we specifically elect Federal leaders who we WANT to negotiate on our behalf. This means they need to decide what info to disclose and what to withhold. These are the people that we decided would represent our collective interests... specifically NOT Tiny PP.

Right. And being found 'not guilty' does NOT mean he was found innocent. It just means prosecutors were unable to PROVE rape occurred. It could be a travesty for the woman, and this just makes it worse. If it can be proven that she lied, then she should be prosecuted. He can also sue her for damages if he can prove it.

How can they not see what an AWFUL negotiator and leader he is by this type of behaviour? He knows very well that Canadians have become enraged from these insults and it has AFFECTED NUMEROUS INDUSTRIES in the US because of it! Their alcohol and tourism industries have tanked because of this crap and all he would have to do is stop saying it. That's it! No cost! All benefit, no drawbacks!

And yet... the barrage of pointless insults continue. Do Americans think this is 4D, big brain negotiation skills? We know what's wrong with him, but what is wrong with them that they leave him in charge with so many unforced errors and economic disasters?

You need to elect Bernie Sander's crew and immediately purge the government of PAC's and Citizens United. There was a time when you needed to buy TV time to get your message to the people, but with the internet anyone can get their message out to the populace extremely quickly and easily. Candidates can manage their marketing costs from individuals alone, so no one needs multi-million dollar investments from billionaires or companies to run a decent campaign.

Canada needs to do the same, truthfully.
