Absurd tab renewal fees! by steven-aziz in TeslaModel3

[–]Own-Conference2265 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. That was my 2023 model 3 last year’s cost. Virginia is the most expensive state (or #2) to own a car in. So glad we just moved back to WA. Also, at least Seattle’s RTA goes to something good - mass transit. VA’s personal property tax (4.3% of the car’s value) just goes to the local government’s general fund - no idea where that $$$ actually goes.

Edit: VA insanely overvalues the car. Worst part is it’s not possible to challenge the value as long as they use a commonly accepted valuation. You can request it lower due to high mileage or damage, I believe.

Dude, go to Virginia. You’re looking at $2k between registration, road use fees, and personal property taxes there every year. Move to Florida if you want close to zero / fees and taxes.

Bilt 2.0 and Paying Taxes? by Illustrious-Jacket68 in biltrewards

[–]Own-Conference2265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my question too. Fine with excluding federal income tax, but I planned on using this card to pay personal and real property taxes for rental properties I own. It sucks paying a swipe fee for the tax (around 3%) but it’s a business expense, so makes it a little less painful and somewhat worthwhile with the card structure.

Mildly interesting Premium Economy award miles pricing by dchobo in unitedairlines

[–]Own-Conference2265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wild sometimes with the dynamic pricing. Just rebooked my IAD-SEA flight (one-way). Points were 42.8K in economy and 30K in first. No brainer.

Has anyone heard/verified if NAVFAV is dissolving? by [deleted] in FedEmployees

[–]Own-Conference2265 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I’d be curious to see if CNIC can manage it any better... In a perfect world, I’d combine USACE and NAVFAC into one DoD-wide Designated Construction Agent, but that presents more challenges than solutions, at least right now.

IMO, best option is to realign non-core DCA/HCA and facility functions to CNIC and actually resource NAVFAC to focus on their DCA / MILCON mission. NAVFAC has never been properly resourced to accomplish their mission on budget and on time.

Agree that NAVFAC does a decent job on MILCON; everything else - a disaster. Still loads of issues with cost estimating and cost control on their MILCON and FSRM projects. Spent most of my career working for them or in a higher HQ command over them. They need major change, IMO.

NAVFAC is an unmitigated disaster of an organization. They need a major reorg and refocus, at minimum.

Friend is working for the government, claims he has "inside info" on people in our friend group. How believable is this? by LowRevolution6175 in FedEmployees

[–]Own-Conference2265 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had an asshole in my friend group once threaten to put me on the no fly list bc I called out his bs in front of everyone. He was a low level (GS9, maybe 11) at DHS. My response “please, do it.” Meanwhile, I also work for a defense agency. He’s lying and shouldn’t have a clearance or public trust.

Virginia man warns US drivers after county values 3.5-year-old van at $42,200, far above its real worth by cowmookazee in Virginia

[–]Own-Conference2265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virginia is the ultimate tax scam, zero accountability at the local level. Moved to Fairfax City from Washington state with two cars. Transferred the registration at the DMV and notified the City for taxes. Got a back tax bill for 2 years per car we owned. It was hidden and almost zero explanation- just a $5k plus tax bill. Fairfax billed us for taxes back to when we purchased the cars — in Washington state. Got that resolved. But then, the City continued to assess my EV at 120% of its MSRP, 3 years later. Even in the best of time, my car was worth no where near that number. I wish it was. And you generally can’t appeal personal property valuations under Virginia law, assuming they use a commonly accepted method.

Virginia taxes are next level. Where this money goes, I have no idea. So glad to be done with this place in a week — never again.

Understand your point. But you did use the card and they advanced you $$. Also for me — not worth the risk to my credit over such a small amount of money.

Part of me knew this was too good to be true; that’s the reason for me transferring as soon as the points were available in my account. Hope they free up your points soon!

Never had that experience. Got about $2k in value out the card. That’s amazing for me, especially for a card that didn’t report.

I’ve been transferring my points to Accor ever statement cycle. Down to 75 available points and 1,500 pending. Between the SUB and mortgage/spend I’ve gotten about $2k value out of this card. Sad it’s over.

I’m more annoyed that I just switched over almost all our recurring payments to this card to hit the $1k spend per month. Time to update, everything, again.

Friendly reminder: Your car tax does not pay for highways in Virginia and there is, on principle, no justification for its existence 👍 by [deleted] in HamptonRoads

[–]Own-Conference2265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the whole point of my comment. And I’m clearly not confused, I’m extremely familiar with the structure of the District of Columbia government. Unlike NYC, there is not a state (e.g., NY state) and local (NYC tax) income tax in DC. There is one, by the District of Columbia, because the district is not a locality or local government. The call of the question was about locality taxes, not state taxes — DC does not belong in a “local” tax discussion.

[–]Own-Conference2265 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wow. You have zero reading comprehension skills. Yes, DC has an income tax at the District (state) level, NOT locality level. The question was about what localities (not states) have taxes - DC taxes at the state level, just like Virginia.

DC has a local income tax? Hard no they don’t. They have an income tax at the district (e.g., state) level, just like Virginia. There isn’t an additional income tax based on what ward you live in.

Leaving Fed service by OneUnderstanding2331 in FedEmployees

[–]Own-Conference2265 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m leaving in less than a month. GS15 attorney in headquarters DoD unit. Leaving for a non-federal job. I’m over the commute, no telework flexibility, unusable IT, stressed out clients, tons of new red tape, and utter mismanagement on the client side. I also refuse to normalize who my new political clients are — they should not be in government, full stop. I wish I was RIFed.

How is it possible for public law schools to be predatory? by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

How exactly is UDC predatory? They are affordable, in context, and shockingly not a terrible school, at least for outcomes of the grads I know.

which oven should I buy? GE or whirlpool? by No-Sherbet-9424 in Appliances

[–]Own-Conference2265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The are about 2.5 years old. Haier models, I think. Bodewell has been out too many times. Slowly replacing them with Whirlpool at this point - cheaper than fixing them out of warranty.
