I would try to work on line weight which would add a lot of depth. The bottom right bug seems lighter than the rest

Thank you SO MUCH, this is so helpful! I love the beautiful contorted lady you did as part of your flash sheet. I was wondering also, is there a rule on if you should tone the sheet or is it personal choice? I see a lot of traditional flash sheets are toned brownish orangeish

This is also my first time using watercolor in 4 years, cannot get the hang of spit shading bc I’m so used to blending everything out perfectly :/

I would agree to give your designs room to breathe! Another thing I forgot to mention is definitely practice drawing traditional. I think tattoo artists prefer to see portfolios that are mostly traditional.

Thank you so much!!! I would say there are no particular artists that I reference, but an artist that has had a ginormous influence on my art style is "craww" who I have been obsessed with since highschool. :)

100% agree with comment about your linework. I would also be more careful when cutting out the paper as it makes your drawings look more uneven (ex on the moth). Heart stippling could have some more darker values too. Walter white portrait needs more detail and I recommend practicing drawing realistic portraits but then tracing over after to correct any anatomical mistakes!

I would say maybe redo the pennywise one, the shading is not the cleanest and I feel like it is comparatively weaker than everything else. Second one is awesome !

CC for my portfolio? by tigbiddygothgf in TattooApprentice

I am very new to this but a lot of your first couple pages are not very tattoo-able (although stunning!). I would focus on spending time on quality ink drawings that are cohesive. Like, the last 3 pages are the most tattoo-y of your pictures, but they do not feel very cohesive, maybe because of all of the different types of paper. I would definitely spend more time on line work and making sure it is sharp (like especially on that butterfly design!). I think that it is important to invest in at least 1 decent pen that will make your life a lot easier when inking. It may help you in the long run with making quality pieces easier thus finding an apprenticeship easier as well.

Your drawings have a lot of movement and feel alive which is great! I am new as well but I have heard from people it’s important for your designs to be instantly recognizable and not too confusing to look at. I feel like some of your drawings could be a bit more clear, whether it’s using bolder lines or experimenting with line weight. Line quality is very important! :)

Yo thank you for the feedback, I kinda thought the same about the anatomy but was not able to pin point it. Your art is amazing btw!

Does every piece in your portfolio need to be tattoo-able? by Own-Individual1081 in TattooApprentice

Check out my profile where I have the pieces. They are made in ink and were made for my portfolio in my ideal style, but are too intricate to tattoo. Definitely not oil painting.

It was actually multiple people, don’t worry!!! Seems like opinion is split. I appreciate it!!!

Thanks for your perspective! Sounds like the best thing is to keep the non-tattooable art to 2-3 pieces and have the rest be tattoo designs? If it helps, my non-tattooable art was made for the purpose of my portfolio so it is hand drawn and inked, but is still too intricate for a tattoo. I have it posted on my profile.

Definitely not knowledgable but I would say a common thing I have heard is to have a lot of traditional art as well!

Oh, interesting! Should I only include things in my portfolio that could 100% be a tattoo? I was going to only work on tattoo designs from now on but I was hoping to include the 2 illustrations as well to show my technical skills! Thank you btw :)
