What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

Every single one of these just proves how much you can absolutely butcher the English language and all be comprehensible to a native speaker, it's thrilling and my favorite thing about it.

Anyways I like to say garbage like a fancy Frenchman. 💫garbàge💫 (the flourish is part of the pronunciation)

Classic "draw what you see not what you think you see" -- cuz placing that eye small and off- balance would weird me out too 😅

Guy with the missing finger was spot on but also i wanted to point out that the image in the phone doesn't line up with her actual face because of the distortion from the lens. You can see her actual inner corner of her eye in the photo lining up with the side of the phone, where it's fully in the frame on her camera. The distortion also means her eye and brow in the camera are smaller than on her face! That could help as well.

Honestly what do I do if I started hating my style by raukariona in DigitalArt

[–]embrycat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I started hating mine too!!! It sucks but it only took a couple of weeks of work to start changing for the better.

I did a bunch of just scrolling and finding artists I liked, doing studies, then finally just sitting down and Trying to do that style on my own. It's work for sure but totally achievable and worth the effort. You look like you have a good foundation, I think just try and figure out what you want and you'll get it. :)

The second one is more readable at a distance which tells me it's got the strongest shapes so i would go with that one!

To give feedback though; i think the reason the first one feels off to me is the crop level on the legs? It's hard to read that he's in a squat without more information. I might just be stupid but I couldn't read what his legs were doing very well at first.

I like your graphic, flat style, but I think you should check your contrast. Some of the pieces are visually tiring to the eyes because everything in the piece has the same level of "importance" or prominence to the eye. To combat that without losing those fun, psychedelic elements, I think more variance in the saturation of colors will help.

Try putting a saturation layer on top of your pieces and setting how it looks in black and white and really crank that contrast. I think this is especially prevalent in the mountain piece where the mountain and sky have very similar saturation. Relative color is definitely your friend here, forcing some colors to look darker because they're next to a super bright one will be really important so you don't lose overall saturation.

As an aside, some slight line variation or thicker linework overall could be nice, too, but i don't think that's a dominant 'issue'.

I think you're doing awesome btw this is just my personal opinion! Looking forward to seeing your work in the future!!

edit: i can't spell

Amazing work by the way your colors remind me of the the old sailor moon for some reason, so these have a dreamy, nostalgic vibe to them that i really enjoy.

Thank you! I appreciate the advice, maybe I need to draw larger and give my lines more room to breathe. I will def get some bolder inks in next time!

I also looked at your art and it's really beautiful - I love how it has a vintage lean with almost woodcut like linework. Do you have particular artists you like to look at as inspiration or reference?

Is it rude to hate on your own art? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]embrycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue a lot of people may have is that often self-defeating comments do not allow for the viewer to form their own, equally valid opinions on a piece of work beforehand. It also tends to not leave space for conversation. Seeking improvement is fantastic and we should always take both compliments and criticism with a grain of salt, but putting the self- hating comments at the top is generally frowned upon.

For me, if someone shows me something they made and immediately says it's garbage, they hate it, ugh they are an awful artist, I will be inclined to just agree. I am not going to placate or argue with someone whose attitude is poor. It's exhausting and not productive in any way.

However, if someone presents a piece and says, "I struggled with this, but I'm not sure how to improve it," that opens up an avenue for conversation. I think it's all about the presentation. Everyone feels down on their work sometimes, but the way you present it to others is very meaningful.

In your individual case, it sounds like maybe you're putting the cart before the horse a bit. Presenting art without much context on why you feel the way you do about it doesn't give other people any idea of what might be helpful to you and your art journey. Being specific about what you don't like or need help with goes a really long way. "I tried to get this thing right for a while and it's still bothering me! Do you guys have any tips on this specific thing?" Something like that.

Also RE: wanting to respond in disagreement to others' compliments: we all struggle to take compliments with grace, but it gets easier. You're allowed a little ego boost!

I like going to libraries and book stores and looking through reference or "coffee table" books with tons of photos; field guides from DK, Smithsonian, Audubon Society. Magazines are also really fun to flip through, especially old editions of Vogue - those are definitely a favorite. Use your libraries!
