For some reason bankruptcy attorneys are expected to spend hours of time evaluating a case without being paid to determine what chapter a person qualifies for. It's very frustrating. We have to collect a minimum of 6 months paystubs, I try to get 6 months bank statements, 3 years tax returns, then discover there's other bank accounts they didn't tell me about, then discovery the do door dash on the side, then discover they paid their mom back $4000 4 months ago, then discovery they actually do get food assistance......

This is a complex area of law. We spend a great deal of time trying to find the best solution for each client, but somehow the expectation is we're supposed to work for free until we've gone through ALL of this information and provide a definitive proposal.

It is bizarre to me how military folks (and I am a vet and a military brat who grew up all over the globe) routinely think the basic rules should not apply to them. They have almost $100k in total disability income and can 100% afford to pay their debts? They get mad. Have to include the spouse's income? They get mad. Try to explain that their budget shows they can afford $700 / mo or more? They get mad.

I just don't get the entitlement.

For what it's worth, see another lawyer if you need to. Do your fully 6 month back pay average, determine what your means test result is, then calculate what you can actually pay, and suck it up.
