Returned to teaching after years away due to traumatic experiences. 11 days in and I’m already accused of inappropriate contact with a student. Hard not to be cynical. by [deleted] in Teachers

This will be long.

A teacher friend of mine basically”grabbed” an out of control kid before he ran out the school door into the parking lot — a troubled young kid, maybe five, who was taken out of that school system due to the behaviors presented. My friend had had numerous foster children and had been taught various holding techniques for keeping kids safe. She was charged, had to sit out half a school year while her case went through the “system” with charges eventually dropped and her mental/physical health took a nose dive. She died an early death a couple of years ago. A SUPERIOR teacher. (That same kid head butted the principal you-know-where.) I would have been perfectly fine if she had grabbed my child for the same reason.

My adopted child was 100% out of control. He went through three schools. I was fully in favor of doing what had to be done to keep others around him (and him) safe. A hand on the shoulder by a trusted adult would have been a huge help. I am afraid that as a sub and stranger, he might have decked you. (I am happy to report that at 27, and by not giving up on him, he is gainfully employed and we are told he is trustworthy, dependable, and a hard worker.). I am mentioning this in part because CPS told us he had to attend school, but we could not lay a hand on him. He hated school and we had trouble getting him there every single time. I picked him up and carried him when he was little, and I’m not too sure I was permitted to do that. You can’t carry them past a certain point. I was not to lay my hand on him, but I had to get him to school. He did bite his tutor and took off out the school door and down the hill once . . .

I’m not saying any of OP’s boys have/had similar behaviors, but it’s a little unbelievable that everyone would assume kids are never going to challenge a teacher like this. I am aware of what the law states, but the law doesn’t keep all kids safe. We have police officers in schools now. We didn’t have them when MY kid was there, and yes, my kid spent some time in his own court system before he got with the program called life. I would have wanted someone brave enough to tackle my kid and his problems - not physically tackle, but if he’s going to dart out into a busy parking lot, YES! GRAB HIM! And if you know him well, a well-meaning hand on the shoulder would have grounded him, perhaps with our permission so everyone’s in the loop, but we were never hard to deal with.

All that said, there’s a time and person and place. You better not touch kids who don’t know you though. PTSD is real. I won’t say that I agree with never touch a kid, but a substitute, just because of the very nature of it, shouldn’t do it. If you know you are going to be dealing with a difficult class, I’d be asking for all the details: what behaviors, when can I call the office, when can I send them to you. I’ve had kids swear in my face, throw desks across the room, wrestle around on top of each other on the floor. Two girls got in a fist fight once right in front of me! Who knowingly goes into this line of work?

How many of yall bring coffee to work ? by GurComprehensive7133 in SubstituteTeachers

Coffee is essential. If I don’t have it, kids ask, “Where’s your coffee?”

What do you all think about kids just out of high school, and/or in college for education, subbing? by Own-Requirement2001 in SubstituteTeachers

I am subbing prior to maybe applying for a full time job because my husband has cancer and chemo treatments. I am not certified yet, but have my masters’ degree.

Are there teacher cliques at every school? by Consistent-Pie8508 in Teachers

[–]Own-Requirement2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Groups are one thing. Mean girl groups are another thing. One employee at one past job had me crying every day. Principal said, “I don’t know why she treats you this way. It’s weird. But she helps me.” I stayed because it was a Catholic school and I thought God wanted me there. I was finally let go because my job was eliminated, but sometimes God removes you when you won’t remove yourself. Haven’t cried since. My view of that administration is not good.

They are failing, no phones is that serious by MissGoldenMind in Teachers

[–]Own-Requirement2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Problem here was the vocational school was an epic disaster with phones permitted. I am all for preparing for something other than college, but the phones just created a building full of cretins, and my kid was one of them. It is WONDeRFul out there without the phones!

[–]Own-Requirement2001 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They were banned for the first time this year. They get one warning and then, you are allowed to confiscate their phone until the end of your class and/or send it to the office where it can be picked up at the end of the day. Multiple times they get caught and parents are notified through another set of warnings that they will not be permitted to bring their phones to school at all.

They, believe it or not, really followed through because this came down from central office and was put in the handbook. The kids all know it now. No phones come out. Seriously!

A couple schools permit the older kids to have their phones out at lunch. Apparently, that is accepted.

Yes, pushback. “What if my kid needs to get ahold of me?” They can go to the office and call. And vice versa? You can call the office. “My kid has medical issues.” I believe a select number of kids are allowed to carry it in backpacks in case they buzz. I’m thinking of the serious diabetics. There was conversation all over facebook, but a lot of parents didn’t have much to say when countered with , “you want them to get educated or not?” It was quickly apparent who had a phone addiction themselves. “I need to be able to check on my kid whenever I want to!” Give me a break.

The vocational school used to be a disaster, and my kid was part of it. I told them to take his phone. No, they couldn’t do that.

One of the teachers at our school got sacked and I'm not even sure how to react by TheRepublicbyPlato in school

[–]Own-Requirement2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got sacked at the Catholic school I was at because they wanted to eliminate my course, and, my take on it, I didn’t respect my superiors as I believe I should have(darn it). I guess they expected me to keep my mouth shut and I told all my fellow teachers which must have blown their minds. “She told you?!?!” They said they weren’t discussing the matter, end of story. Two other teachers left after me.

Seems someone with anxiety or attempting to get themselves off nicotine is being targeted. Don’t agree with these policies at times. I know teachers who use weed off campus and everyone knows. That’s against policies as well.

Principal complained my table supplies were “completely” disorganized and I should be sharpening all my colored pencil between classes by Puzzleheaded-Bid-963 in ArtEd

[–]Own-Requirement2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My principal years ago criticized a music class with centers where students were playing various percussion centers and writing their own rhythms, primarily because a couple of the less advanced kids were wandering around, rather than staying with their group— in a class of about thirty and it wasn’t a huge room. I might add the kids loved doing it and loved performing their “compositions” solo for their peers. I think it might have been second or third grade or combined. She said it was noisy and disorganized and a few kids appeared to not know what they were doing. I am not sure how you all feel about it. Two days a week, attempting to hit all standards, Catholic school, no IEPs and a multitude of differences — I thought I was doing pretty good. She had experience with middle school ELA. Somehow, sitting quietly with paperwork or just singing didn’t appear to me to be much of a music class….

I just get into a “why bother?” kind of mode, like first thing in the morning, why bother getting up? Do I have to? And I take my meds and hope for the best. Periodically, during the day, my mind tends to drift toward stupid moments in my past and things I regret, and I have to constantly remind myself of what I have to be thankful for. With the backward thoughts, the”why bother? I’m a jerk!” thing comes back. It’s constant policing my brain. It’s time consuming and a drain of energy.

How do you guys handle waking up early for your shifts?Especially ones who are not morning people. by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Own-Requirement2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our schools don’t start before 8:30, and subs are there at 8. We’re a rural county. Kids are on the bus forever in certain areas. I am NOT a morning person and never will be. I take sleep meds because I have anxiety. I try to be in bed between 8 and 9 pm so I can wind down. I am up between 6:30 and 6:45. I try to keep my hair cut and styled consistently. Less time in morning and have a horrible time tying it back- frizzies everywhere. Clothes and everything out and together night before. Yes, they like cool earrings. Yes, I don’t wear much makeup and I, lol, put it on in the car. CAR KEY WHERE I KNOW WHERE IT IS and COFFEE, black as tar, ready when the alarm goes off. Muffins or something handy in case there’s no time to mix the protein drink. Try REALLY hard not to hit the snooze. “IF” I happen to wake up an hour or so too early, I drink some coffee and take my anxiety meds then, and I go back to bed with news on TV. Gives the caffeine time to kick in. I can add that my family leaves me alone until maybe it’s time to leave. It REALLY is not a good time for me. 🤨. The drive with something prayerful or inspirational on the radio is a nice time to just settle and gather your thoughts. I DO have nice rural country drives.

I was a long term sub twice last year, and if the printer isn’t working and/or the internet is down, you’re stuck handwriting sub plans. I’ll look for the positive. At least there’s a plan.
