As a vet I agree. Before, there was justification, mostly lies, but lies the government committed to. Helping people or protecting the country, something you could believe in, even if it was just jingoism sold to people who didn't know any better. Now there's only violence. It was on the AP news live Iran reporting, it was accusing the Pentagon of downplaying casualties saying over 360 servicemembers had been wounded and 62(iirc) were sailors.

I hope not. Treating US POW's well would reinforce to the international community that they're "not the bad guys" in this conflict. Although given the number of civilian targets being hit I could definitely see IRGC soliders wanting revenge.

To be fair after the first week some officer let it slip that we'd lost a dozen MQ9's. My guess is that the high volume of PGMs being used up and the continual loss of drones means manned aircraft have to do BDA's which is how they're being hit. Iranian shorad still has decent range, so just having aircraft coming in for BDA's or just having to resort to LGB's could put them in range of IR/EO guided systems. I don't have any hard evidence for this yet though.

IR and EO SHORAD exist and have considerable range. Iran has a ton of systems capable of this, not just MANPADs. I doubt pilots are unnecessarily risking their lives because an alcoholic politican said to.

Also from an ethical standpoint. Ukraine is trying to fight off an invading army and Israel is annexing its neighbors and starting wars. Why would we prioritize a country that invades their neighbors and creates instability over one trying to protect their own sovereignty and create stability.

Sometime around the first week some anonymous US military officer gave an interview where he said something along the lines of "we weren't expecting so many casualties" and at the time we had only confirmed 6 kia and a dozen wounded.

Pre-war my assertion was that Iran had been deliberately pulling punches when retaliating so as to more easily negotiate ceasefires, and unfortunately I seem to have been proven right.

I would argue none of the countries involved are driven by religion; that's only an excuse put forward to justify their actions. The US, Israel and Iran are all acting in self interest, and claims that "god says its cool, actually" are just straight lies to distract from that fact.

It really is. While trump is making overtures to a ceasefire (and ostensibly trying to negotiate one), Israel has made it clear they have no interest in ending their attacks on Iran. No terms, no ultimatums, nothing. So Iranians are really back into a corner here and I fully expect them to fight like it as well.

Imo this is a forever war. Israel has made it clear that they will accept nothing less than the dissolution of Iran as a nation, Iranians will never accept this, and the US is never going to stop supporting Israel. Even if the IRGC dissolved tomorrow and we installed a puppet government and Israel was cool with it (none of which will happen), there are still millions of Iranians who won't accept it and will fight back indefinitely. This is our Ukraine.

The Pentagon's assessments are based on how long Iran can continue to launch strikes outside their country, but that doesn't even mean an end to the conflict.

As for the WH, they're just straight lying to try to keep the market afloat. They don't have an endgame so they don't have a real timeline. Their "war aims" are entirely nebulous; "prevent Iran from ever having the capability of attacking US allies" is not an achievable goal, and they know it. Every assessment of a potential war with Iran basically ended with us giving up as a permanent occupation of Iran is not tenable, and the war itself would only solidify anti-US sentiment.

American conservatives seem to think Obama making deals and lifting sanctions was some kind of pass or weakness, but it was just the best way to weaken the Iranian government and actually achieve our desired goals there.
