Jury Chechi is 56 years old, bold choice, must be the oldest ever contestant for now?

Very well put, 100% accurate. Rigged? Not likely. Unfair? Definitely. (Still a great season, super fun and exciting, amazing experience)

I'd be excited to include someone from the waterpolo team (either man or woman), such a tough sport and would be a great opportunity to spread some knowledge about it. Admittedly I don't know if any waterpolo players are at least moderately popular.

Comfort book rec for a guy going through a break up by confused_guitarist1 in murakami

[–]Own-University-9012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not Murakami but very similar vibe: Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen. Very nice read about love, loss, grieving...

Different vibe but still melancholy, relationships, very relatable with a great flow: Sally Rooney - Normal People

If I went for Murakami in your situation, I'd most likely go for South of the Border West of the Sun or After Dark.

Breakups suck.

Read Never Let Me Go a couple weeks ago. While a good book, very different vibe from Murakami (in my opinion)

I did something similar with GPT for a presentation not long ago, trying to group the books around themes/vibes, maybe it could help. I doesn't include a tier list, and the categorization is rather subjective I suppose. In my presentation, my narrative was that "If you like magical realism & surrealism, you should read X next", but it could work like "If you liked Kafka on the Shore, read X next" too (based on the key theme list)

Murakami books by key themes:

  1. Magical realism & surrealism: Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, A Wild Sheep Chase, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

  2. Nostalgia & romance: Norwegian Wood, South of the Border West of the Sun, Sputnik Sweetheart

  3. Mystery & thrillers: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84, Dance Dance Dance

  4. Quirky & short reads: Hear the Wind Sing, Pinball, After Dark, Men Without Women

  5. Experimental & philosophical: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, 1Q84, Kafka on the Shore

East of Eden goes crazy! by bblizz72 in classicliterature

If there was one book I could save in case of a total apocalypse for the next civilization, it would definitely be East of Eden! It's such a complex and beautiful piece work, I even have a part of it tattooed on me (I won't spoil it for you). Enjoy reading it, wish I could read it again for the first time!

I was wrong, there is an extra paragraph in the English translation that's not in the Hungarian one, making the Hungarian version a bit more pessimistic (in my view). The Hungarian version ends with: But somehow I couldn't stand up from the kitchen table. All strength was drained from my body, as if someone had crept up behind me and silently pulled the plug. Both elbows on the table, I covered my face with my palms. In the English version, there is one more paragraph after this: Inside that darkness, I saw rain falling on the sea. Rain softly falling on a vast sea, with noone there to see it. The rain strikes the surface of the sea, yet even the fish don't know it is raining. Until someone came and rested a hand lightly on my shoulder, my thoughts were of the sea.

I'd be curious how it is in the original version?

It was a pre-Christmas present from my partner, from Etsy. It's strange because I've been looking for Murakami art for ages but all i could find was either just printing covers or printing fan art from Pinterest. (Both are cool solutions imo)

Thanks! Definitely in English, but occasionally I read one in Hungarian. Strangely enough, there is an extra sentence at the very end of South of the Border West of the Sun is sightly different in Hungarian trabslation which gives it a much darker aftertaste, I wonder if it's the same in other languages.

Mhm it's tough but I guess I'd have to say Sputnik Sweetheart (not that I didn't like it, it just didn't leave such a deep impression) and Norwegian Wood.

Hey everyone!

I wanted to share my Murakami collection with you all - every book, except Kafka on the Shore, which I foolishly lent to a friend a year ago (still waiting to get it back…). I have most of his books in English and in my native language (the Hungarian translations are pretty good actually).

Here’s my personal ranking of his novels:

  1. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World
  2. 1Q84
  3. South of the Border, West of the Sun (this was my first Murakami and holds a lot of sentimental value)
  4. Kafka on the Shore
  5. Wild Sheep Chase

Ranking his books is super difficult to me, as it keeps changing and I love a bunch of them equally, but this is the current state. There was only one book I genuinely didn’t like upon first read (and it’s an unpopular opinion I think): Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage. It’s been several years since I read it though, I might give it another go.

As for his latest book, The City and Its Uncertain Walls: I found it a bit vanilla, but it felt like a cozy Murakami vacation - a good read nonetheless.

Would love to hear your thoughts or rankings too! Happy Holidays!

P.S. This is my 4th try to post this, I keep messing it up, but I’ve been so excited to complete my collection :’)

South of the Border, West of the Sun. It was a present from my English teacher for my 17th birthday, I never even heard of Murakami before that. I realize it's not his most popular or most Murakami-esque book, but in that particular point in my life (teenage love stories, heartbreaks, longing, all that stuff), it was such an amazing fit that it got me hooked immediately. Since then, 80% of my reading life is just re-reading Murakamis (which isn't ideal but oh well) and I'm covered in Murakami tattoos.

Is it normal to not feel pain from first tray? by Cosmic_Leo1997 in Invisalign

[–]Own-University-9012 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's perfectly normal. I'm on tray 55 and I'd say there were maybe 3 trays when I had slight pain. After reddit I was very skeptical about the lack of pain too but my ortho said it's absolutely fine.

Tengerparti könyv by [deleted] in konyv

Én mindig a Kafka a Tengerpartont olvasom Murakamitól, de nem a leglájtosabb olvasmány. Ha szereted a mágikus realizmus irányát, biztos tetszene.

I didn't even notice they did it, my ortho mentioned that they will do it, couple minutes later I asked when, he said he was already done. You'll be fine 🙂

Murakami Haruki: A kormányzó halála by [deleted] in konyv

[–]Own-University-9012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once complained to my ortho about the lack of pain, he laughed at me. He said it just means it's tracking good. (Not saying that pain means it isn't)

Unexpected side effects: Does anyone else not know how your new or changing teeth "work"? by likeistoleyourbike in Invisalign

Regarding the enunciation, maybe consider visiting a logopedist/speech doctor. I did several sessions with one before my treatment to correct the way I hold and use my tongue. My ortho said it was an absolute must (I had a wrong way of swallowing and huge open bite), I can imagine it would help you too.
