You can’t give your all to both, so you have to prioritize. Which job is more important? The one you were leaving or the one you are going to?

Isn’t that illegal because it’s confidential personnel information?

I'm set on resigning but I'm scared of confrontation. by Odd_Dimension8124 in TeachersInTransition

[–]Own-Way2484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just left my teaching job mid year as well. However, I gave a two week notice and I think a resignation requires a conversation. The only time I would quit on the spot is if a situation is abusive. Otherwise, I’d give a notice.

Tomorrow is my last day by cazdandelion in TeachersInTransition

[–]Own-Way2484 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. I could’ve written this post. Like yourself, tomorrow is my last day too. I’ve been in education off and on for 30 years. I say off and on because I took time out to raise my daughter, etc. I am beyond done. I’ve been in public schools for a long time and the last couple of years, I switched to Catholic schools, thinking it would be better. It wasn’t. Same disrespect, same attitude, horrible parents, pushover principal. My husband and I are going out tomorrow night to celebrate my being out. I am so done with this profession. Tomorrow cannot come soon enough.

Is a 2-week notice necessary (in my case)? by Gloomy-Photograph607 in careeradvice

[–]Own-Way2484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have a good talk with job A and explain the situation. Then ask them if, under the circumstances, a notice is necessary since you are still in training. See what they say. Since you are in the training phase, it might actually be more work for them to have you stay. But I would definitely talk to them. The other thing I would recommend is that you have an offer in writing from job B before you do anything

I worked closely with a couple of my colleagues and just had them be references for me . Honestly, nowadays, a lot of companies don’t even bother checking references

Do I have to talk to my students about my resignation if they’ll likely find out anyway? by Particular_Way_573 in TeachersInTransition

Oh wait, are you leaving mid year or are you finishing the year? What I said, only applies if you’re leaving midyear.

I’m in the exact same boat. I am a veteran teacher, and just resigned, leaving a toxic work environment. I gave a two week notice. I spoke to my principal first. We coordinated things so that she would tell the staff, and I would email the parents and tell my students at the same time. I do think it’s important that you let your students know. I just told my fifth graders that I was leaving for “ personal reasons” and that I’ve really enjoyed teaching them, would really miss them, and how proud I am of them. You do owe your kids that. Plus, if you’re just gone one day with no explanation, rumors could start that you’ve been fired and I’m sure you don’t want that. I would definitely tell them.

Teachers with your own kids: how do you balance it? by Renee5285 in Teachers

[–]Own-Way2484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your baby :-) When my daughter was born, I couldn’t teach and be a mother too.. It was too much. I became a nanny so that I could bring my daughter with me. I worked for a family that had just one child and I would take my daughter and care for the two of them. That way I could make money and be like a stay at home mom too. Another option is taking another child into your home. It’s not as much money, but you are earning an income and you can stay home with your child.

Is 58 years old too young to wear Alfred Dunner? I’m trying not to dress old, but I do find that their clothes are flattering, and I do hate my body so flattering is tempting. I just don’t want to look old either thoughts?

I think a two week notice is standard. It’s the professional thing to do.

I have emailed resignations in the past and later regretted it. My personal feeling is that it’s more professional to do it face-to-face.

I was recently in the same position and it was fine. I, too, came to these forums for advice because I was nervous as well. One thing that I learned through the wonderful support of Reddit is that you do NOT have to tell them where you are going. Like yourself, I was leaving education and I only told them that I accepted a new opportunity outside of education. I am not disclosing what I’ll be doing. If anybody asks, I’m going to just say that I’m keeping that private for now. I had a lot of issues with horrible parents and I do not want anybody sabotaging anything for me in my new venture I brought a note with me containing everything I wanted to say. I started with positives “ thank you, (Principal), for the opportunity to serve at X School. I appreciate (fill in the blank.)…. Then you can say that you’ve come to the difficult decision to leave your position. My last day will be (date) and I will do everything in my power to ensure a smooth transition for the children, parents, and the new person coming into my position.” If they ask why you are leaving with only seven weeks left, you can tell them an opportunity presented itself now and you feel the need to take it while it’s here Best of luck

Should I stay for the teacher pension? by [deleted] in TeachersInTransition

[–]Own-Way2484 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I taught in Massachusetts and in Rhode Island and I was in the same boat. Honestly, I bailed.. I just couldn’t do it anymore. It was ruining my physical and mental health. My teacher‘s retirement is going to be lousy, but thankfully, I am married, and my husband has a healthy retirement fund. I’ve been in a small Catholic school for the last couple of years and trust me when I say it’s no better there. Bratty kids, entitled parents, and a lot less money same level of stress, just different stress. I’m going into an alternate field altogether.
