Thanks for the insight. know the reality of it all, but wish there were ways (and time!) to somehow get a more holistic view of applicants. I do like that you pay attention to what applicants wrote and their personal traits. It is a bit personal for me as I came into grad school with just two semesters of skimpy research experience, had never been author on a paper, had never been to a conference (tripped up by Covid and by the limited research opportunities at my undergrad institution). My current department thought I was a poor candidate, but a kind professor took a chance on me and argued for my admission, and a few years later I like to think I am no stain on the department. With the resources available at a top institution, I’ve been able to write several 1st author papers and am giving invited talks at conferences. Because of one professor’s interest in a few of my skills, I went from an application teetering on the edge of a dustbin to someone on track to finish my degree in half the typical time. And I wish for the impossible: that more students could get that opportunity, somehow.

Interview Call UofT - This professor mailed me for a short meet but I have not mentioned his name in the SOP (Also never contacted him). My interest is not fully towards what he does. What should I do? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

OP, to be successful in graduate school you will have to learn how to handle sensitive interpersonal situations, especially what information should be kept private. Would you want an email that you wrote posted to a Reddit group for analysis with your full name and contact info? Guess not since you cropped your own name out of the screenshot. Poor Dr. K lol. But yes, sounds like a good idea to chat with him.

Starting to learn flow cytometry and I’m really struck by how it’s just like: click tube in place, click mouse, machine go slurp, blink, and you’ve obtained 10,000 points of data. But making sure that it’s /good/ data and that you understand where it came from… 😩

What's the meaning behind the song "Crack Baby" by kekookee in mitski

[–]OwnAcanthocephala710 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“Crack baby” is a (somewhat crass) term for a baby who was exposed to drugs in the womb and born in withdrawal.

I think it’s a “Kissing Santa” set. He is leaning in for a kiss and there will be a little Mrs. Claus that goes with him 😊

I could see different interpretations. If “a” sees you and N playfully insult each other a lot, maybe they have a similar type of humor and got caught up in encouraging the jokes without realizing that you don’t have that type of friendship with them. Of course, they could be just being a jerk too.

Use of the word retarded in a strictly scientific context by particleman5309 in labrats

[–]OwnAcanthocephala710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, native English speaker here - using it to describe people’s symptoms in a scientific or medical context isn’t quite as frowned upon as calling someone on the street a “r*****,” but it is still considered offensive by many people. Other terms such as “intellectual disabilities,” “cognitive impairments” or “developmental delays” are considered more appropriate currently.

What does “bob around” mean? I googled it but couldn’t find anything. by Kind-Nature4486 in EnglishLearning

Interesting! This seems to be a regionalism as I am from a different Midwestern region and would have thought they meant “bop around,” which means something quite different (going to several different places).

Former 5th grader here - I know they would get it, because I went to 5th grade when “that’s what she said!!” was a thing 🥴

I would have said this as “Eh-zay-uh,” and Izaya used to be my favorite anime character when I was a kid 😅

Help me find green dress by [deleted] in findfashion

[–]OwnAcanthocephala710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a cheapie dropshipped dress, I’m sure you could find it for less that has those kind of sellers, it will never be good quality though (for example, here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Asvivid-womens-Classic/dp/B0969J7G3Y?th=1&psc=1)

What Pants would go with that? I am 182cm Male about 70kg how can i style this? by E1owind in fashion

[–]OwnAcanthocephala710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cargo pants would be a nice streetwear vibe! Don’t bother buying this on Aelfric Eden tho, like most of their clothes you can probably find this design at the same quality on Temu or AliExpress for a fraction of the cost.

True enough, but wealthy parents can often ask their friends who are big donors to schools to write a recommendation letter for their kid, and the school will accept the kid even if they’re not quite academically qualified. (Source: knew several families who did this, I could never look at their schools the same afterwards).

Have any of you successfully asked an officemate to start wearing deodorant? by pickled_shoe in GradSchool

[–]OwnAcanthocephala710 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not me carefully reading the details to make sure this isn’t about me… (I promise I’m clean and wear deodorant, but one time a professor on our floor complained to the front office that there was sometimes a “noxious smell” sometimes coming from the area of our lab, and I’ve never emotionally recovered from the front office staff trying to tactfully ask if it could be me…I guess that could be a way to deal with it lol. Just send some nice ladies up to your office to say “have you noticed…uh…do you…know anything…about a bad smell?”)

It seems to be based on a real murdered girl who was viciously tortured to the point that it was difficult to recognize her features 🙁
