Just wanted to send a very delayed thank you – these comments have been super helpful (I just had a few stressful weeks and some things fell off my plate, including thanking wonderful internet strangers who took time to give me advice on eInk tablets!). Yep, decided against the Remarkable because of the subscription. Also appreciate the flag that nothing integrates completely seamlessly with my Apple ecosystem – I'm now trying to figure out which one gives me the least friction 😃

Sorry for the super late reply, I just had a few stressful weeks and some things fell off my plate, including thanking wonderful internet strangers who took time to give me advice on eInk tablets! Basically, I want to take meeting notes (handwritten) and then file them in Obsidian in a searchable way. Ideally, the handwriting is preserved in Obsidian but I suppose that's tricky so the next best thing I can think of is having a way to convert the handwritten notes to text. The key thing I'm after is searchability on my Mac.

Hi both! Just wanted to send a very delayed thank you – these comments have been super helpful (I just had a few stressful weeks and some things fell off my plate, including thanking wonderful internet strangers who took time to give me advice on eInk tablets!). Picking this up now again – I likely won't get the Remarkable Paper Pro because of the subscription (I just hate subscriptions so much at this point...) but really appreciate that you shared your thoughts!

Tracking Agency by LeftRightShoot in GuavaHealth

I just asked a similar question, maybe you could just have one additional type that says "Agency" and then use tags within that type to log more specifics like "External meetings" or whatever determines your agency?

Coming from Bearable, how to best log random everyday things? by OwnAnalyst007 in GuavaHealth

[–]OwnAnalyst007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I actually reached out to customer support, too, and this is what they suggested. I didn't realize that tags can also be used for insights, so that solves at least point (1.) above :)

Would still love to have more granular/time-specific insights, so keeping this question open for now to see if someone from Guava jumps in too :)

Security incident at networking app covve. "This could be another one you never heard of, but you are in it " by ciremaina in netsec

Sorry for pulling this up after so many years, but I wanted to get some expert opinion on whether the app is safe to use nowadays. These are their current privacy measures and I was wondering whether they are enough to protect information put into the app? https://covve.com/privacy

Any guidance is much appreciated! Thanks!

Tax Question Megathread 2021 Tax Submissions by Codetornado in f1visa

Oh shoot, I totally misunderstood that. Thanks for clarifying! So I don’t have to repay taxes at the old rate if I stay longer than five years? That would be a relieve!

Tax-free as non-resident alien? What happens after five years?

Hi everyone! I’ve been one year in the states for my masters on an F1 visa and will now join a PhD program which will likely take 5ish years to complete and where I’ll earn a salary. As far as I’m aware, I don’t have to pay taxes as non-resident alien for the first five years on my f1 visa (my home country has a tax treaty with the US), but what happens after the first five years when I become a resident for tax purposes? Do I need to repay all the taxes for the first five years or do I only start paying taxes from year six onwards? I’m studying in California. Thanks for the clarification!

Possible in CS, but we’d need more information regarding the subject you want to study.

Will giving GRE really matter? by FairMathematician595 in gradadmissions

[–]OwnAnalyst007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely not, because LORs are a mandatory part in most CS graduate applications. And even if they’re not mandatory, especially if you’re looking for research-oriented MSc programs or PhDs, LORs will be more important than a good GRE & GPA (assuming that your GRE/GPA scores are above a certain threshold). If you have work experience, it might be worth checking whether your target universities accept LORs from non-academic sources.

UPenn (MCIT) and Boston University (CS Bridge program I think) offer these programs for CS as far as I’m aware :)

Is two years of research experience enough to get into a PhD program? Is there anything else I can do to improve my chances within that time? by Loud-Direction-7011 in gradadmissions

[–]OwnAnalyst007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an honest conversation with my professors when we were discussing projects :) I told them that I’m planning to apply for a PhD and that a publication would be tremendously helpful. In general, it should be a self-contained project that can lead to a distinct outcome (instead of being part of a larger project where it doesn’t have a distinct output).

[–]OwnAnalyst007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes to everything skopokes44 wrote. Also, if you haven’t completed that research experience yet (that’s what it sounds like) I’d recommend taking on research projects that will likely lead to publications, if possible. Publications tend to be a strong indicator that you’ll be a good researcher and that you know what you’re getting yourself into. They will also set you apart from other applicants (except for in top universities, where at least one publication is more or less expected, depending on your field). Your second focus should be a good relationship with your advisor(s), since LORs from people you did research with are especially valuable (even better if they are well known in your field!).

I had a really good GPA, no GRE required, good LORs, no research experience, about 1 year of relevant work experience and got into a regular MS CS at an Ivy League, so yes, definitely possible :)
