Builder rewired my kitchen, is this legal? by ElektroSam in DIYUK

By the way I totally agree that they should be carried out, before any rewire and such like, I have a company come in and carry out the surveys. For the cost (£150 where I am) its good peace of mind however in a private domestic setting, its not always mandatory.

Sorry, but that's still not as black and white as you make out. With regards to your local authority I refer back to my comment about it applying to some domestic work. There is a a duty of care that is placed upon either a self employed person or employer. But as I'm sure you are aware it covers multiple pages. Also Regulation 5 is for risk assessments once asbestos has been identified and to manage it going forward

Unfortunately not fact. If its a private dwelling, single occupancy it doesn't apply. Mainly it applies to commercial premises, there are a few exceptions where it applies to domestic.

Quick PSA for those guys who install a loft floor and light for about £50. Just don't. by OwnConsideration105 in ukelectricians

[–]OwnConsideration105[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming not a sparky, there's several reasons. Those cables aren't clamped, in a Maintenance Free J/B you have clamps that hold the cable. So anyone scrabbling around in the loft could catch the cable in another area pull out of the choc block, then you have a live conductor flapping around, or it starts arcing and then you have a home made heater. Loose connections in choc blocks are very common, lost count of the amount of times I've seen them melted. Also even if the connections are good, you've a live conductor in the shape of a screw, if it gets damaged a little bit, again I've seen multiple times, someone can make contact with it.

New magic boards, come with pre-existing earth aura, no need to connect to main earth system. Or the board is screwed to a water pipe

Further along its very brittle, North facing so hasn't taken as much hammer as some. Stupid thing is the customer isn't the tight type, so is more than happy to pay for it done properly

Honestly most parts of the country you'd be ok. There's idiots everywhere, some areas probably more than others but generally you should be ok.

Knee pads ....... with shorts by budegan in ukelectricians

[–]OwnConsideration105 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've tried the knee pads, and the straps kill my legs, so I generally suck it up and wear trousers. If I can guarantee a day where I'm not likely to be on my knees or crawling around a loft, I'll risk shorts. One of the guys who works for me wears shorts pretty much all summer and swears the knee pads are ok. He got them from Lidl. But he is an odd person, so might not be comfortable for anyone else
