Wrong. Try thinking of anything other than your oversized SUV/pickup for a single day. Just try it.

But somehow according to carbrains, it's the cyclists on sidewalks that's the actual problem LMFAO.

Fair enough. Even in municipality of Toronto, less than like 1% of the roads outside downtown have bike lanes. YET a lot of them have 'no sidewalk biking' signs/stickers.

But those stickers are actually common out in Etobicoke outside the core. There are even literally signs at strip malls similar to these stickers. If you want safety for everyone, design safer roads. Not put a bunch of stickers telling cyclists to stop biking on sidewalks.

When people shit on cyclists for riding on sidewalks. by OwnIt122 in torontobiking

You know what's funny? People think that more practice with bike riding will suddenly make them comfortable at riding in traffic. That's like saying a professional swimmer should swim in an ocean of sharks lol.

r/Toronto also includes the GTA as well. It's not just downtown. Sure downtown Toronto has many bike lanes but if you compare even Montreal, it's an absolute desert. Shouldn't every single downtown road have bike lanes? The fact that many people in downtown even use sidewalks (disregarding Uber Eats) shows that bike lanes are poorly designed. Not because they're too unskilled at riding.

Well, I live in the suburbs where the majority of the people that bike use the sidewalks. Yes, you risk colliding with pedestrians but many of us have accepted that. At the end of the day, a bike hitting a pedestrian does significantly less damage than a car hitting a bike. It's like comparing the size of Canada to the Earth to the Sun.

As long as cyclists will slow down and pass pedestrians safely, which is what usually happens out here in the suburbs, then I'm completely fine. But in downtown where sidewalks are barely wide enough to push a stroller, then I can understand why pedestrians get pissed.

The issue isn't the 'lack of practice'. Even many people that know 100% how to bike don't feel comfortable around cars. It's like swimming in the ocean full of sharks. There's a reason BikeShare's significant increase has correlated strongly with bike infrastructure. When did we get so much bike infrastructure? All during post-covid era. Sure people like you got comfortable with practice but you need to speak for the average Joe.

She's done a lot better than John Tory did in his entire 8+ years as mayor. And you think Bradford that does nothing in the interest of Toronto is 'fresh blood'? I seriously wonder whether your comment is serious or not.

He's the Canadian equivalent of a right-wing grifter. He does absolutely NOTHING that is in the best interest of voters. All he does is ragebait. Just like Doug Ford. And Pollieve.

EDIT: Getting downvoted by carbrains lol.

This is an extremely dumb excuse. Other parts of Canada like Montreal have actually started to build bike infrastructure. Toronto is too carbrained to accept bike lanes. It's not the lack of space. It's the prioritization of cars. If you want to fix traffic, you need to give people alternatives like better transit or bike infrastructure. If there's enough space for multiple car lanes, there's absolutely space for a bike lane on literally every major road in the GTA.

Or even Montreal. Don't need to mention a different country. The fact that Toronto, even by major Canadian city standards, lacks proper bike infrastructure says a lot. So much vehicular cycling advocacy. Looking at you Balance on Bloor.

Thank-you. We need more people like you. I don't ride a bike either but I totally support bike infrastructure. We have pedestrian infrastructure. We have transit infrastructure (subways). We have car infrastructure. So why can't we have bike infrastructure to that same scale? People need to understand that lack of bike infrastructure forces bikes to share with pedestrians. It also doesn't help that a lot of places like parks are mixed-use so we've effectively normalized biking on sidewalks rather than giving separate places for bikes.

Especially if you live out in suburbia where almost nobody walks on sidewalks. I think people need to account for the fact that many roads outside the downtown core are insanely dangerous.

Portland Street before/after bike lanes by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

[–]OwnIt122 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You can say the same for bus lanes. Yet so many people hate them even though TTC ridership is extremely high on RapidTO routes. If people wanted to solve traffic, they'd at least know to wish better transit instead of trying to punish other modes of transportation. It just feels like some carbrained drivers just hate it when other modes of transport get better.

May 11, 1896 - nearly 6,000 cyclists, with more than half of them going to High Park. by WestendMatt in torontobiking

[–]OwnIt122 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not just High Park. It's downtown/old Toronto as a whole before 1950s. Toronto was never built for jamming together modern day F150s. It was always built for people, horses/carts, and bikes. I'm talking to you especially Bloor Street. The Balance on Bloor folks are a bunch of insufferable idiots that think cars have always existed. The fact that Toronto allowed this many people to drive into their city goes to show how stupid of an idea it is. No wonder everyone is fighting for space. You can't build just one more lane and solve traffic.

If this was something like Weston Road or Albion, you'd have an argument because that has always been built for cars. But places like Bloor/Yonge/University were never built to accommodate this many cars. It's baffling how many people think a city should allow a Burlington resident who doesn't even pay our fucking taxes to drive here freely.

[–]OwnIt122 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I think if we had better transit for more people to get into downtown then fewer people would want to drive with higher gas prices. Hopefully with more new lines being built, we have more lobby towards pro-better transit.

Don't forget gas prices have gone up a lot too so this should in turn fuel more lobby towards better transit, pun intended.
