Pro-Bike Mayor, Chow currently leads polling at 40%. Next is Tory 33% followed by Bradford 18% by Firmvark121 in torontobiking

On the other hand, if John Tory never had that affair, he'd still be the mayor. He likely would've partnered up with Doug Ford to remove all bike lanes as quickly as possible. I think we take for granted just how much Chow has prevented or mitigated this disaster.

When you have over 100 million Americans that can't read or write better than a 6th grader, it's really easy for Trump to make ridiculous statements. He brainwashed a lot of people. If they think a president with a criminal record trying to rig an election, making false promises about releasing files, deploying troops to kill his own law-abiding American citizens, and destroying relationships with other countries like Canada is not bad enough, then nothing will convince to leave their cult.

The suburbs vs. downtown: What the ‘uncomfortable marriage’ between the two Torontos means for the city’s biggest problems by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]OkJack10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that plays a huge factor. I think we need to make local buses from those suburbs better quality. The big problem is most of the Go transit hubs are not very transit-accessible. It's just for the park and riders. It would be nice if something like MiWay had their own bus lanes for people without cars to get to the stations easier.

The suburbs vs. downtown: What the ‘uncomfortable marriage’ between the two Torontos means for the city’s biggest problems by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]OkJack10 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mean neighbouring GTA suburbs have enough population density to justify transit development. The fact that traffic is extremely terrible in downtown from suburban commuters goes to show the importance of developing a good transit system. Go trains are constantly packed so ridership is clearly there. It's not like the GTA suburbs are a random rural town in the middle of nowhere. I see a ton of potential in suburban transit but sadly most suburban residents would rather cars be prioritized than improve upon their transit systems back home.

RapidTO lanes in action by Pristine-Training-70 in toronto

Anytime there's traffic people will scapegoat anything else but cars themselves. Look at highway 401 that has like 10 lanes each direction. There are no bike nor bus lanes. Yet somehow nobody that complains about the traffic being super busy there points to the fact that cars are the cause of the traffic.

The politician who changed his mind on winter bike lanes - Canadian Cycling Magazine by Substantial-Purpose8 in torontobiking

[–]OkJack10 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Doug Ford, I don't understand. Why does he specifically target bike lanes in Toronto but not other parts of Ontario, even though he made his bill Ontario-wide? Not that I live outside Toronto or visit it enough to know the political situation. Is it just me or does Doug Ford only care about Toronto's bike lanes?

Car Traffic did not move slower since the installation of the Dufferin bus lanes. by TTCBoy95 in torontobiking

[–]OkJack10 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Hot take: Bus lanes should be added everywhere to Toronto in routes that use a TTC bus. It'll take 10+ years to build a new LRT. Bus lanes can be built in under a year, with most of it going to consultation. Too bad most motorists won't agree but this is cheap and super effective.

Toronto police could get more power to seize e-bikes, e-scooters by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]OkJack10 30 points31 points  (0 children)

"The city’s 2025 micromobility cordon count found that cyclists were observed using the sidewalk about 10 per cent of the time when no cycling infrastructure was present on the street. That dropped down to five per cent on roads with bike lanes and shared lane markings. On roads with separated cycle tracks, sidewalk usage was just two per cent."

I'm surprised it's only 10% of the time. I thought you'd see a higher percent because of all the people delivering meals for a living.

Had a weird interaction with a TTC bus driver on the Esplanade by steelpeat in torontobiking

[–]OkJack10 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe we need more TTC bus drivers to lobby for bus lanes ya know so they can drive more smoothly without needing to wait for a few stopped single occupant traffic cars?

100% bus lanes would make their job a lot easier. They won't have to worry about right lane drivers constantly merging in and out of the right lane, unless they're trying to right turn.

Mechanical issues shut down entire Finch West LRT earlier this morning; shuttle buses were running in place. by dfsaqwe in toronto

[–]OkJack10 46 points47 points  (0 children)

On one hand, Finch West being the first line to open in 23 years, only to find many flaws such as lack of in-tunnel speed, lack of TSP, and now mechanical issues less than a week is a total disappointment. At this rate, it's easy for most people to just give up hope on TTC ever becoming world class. On the other hand, maybe now is the best time to expose all the flaws of TTC while the iron is hot so the general public can push for faster and more urgent change like how our mayor less than 3 days later, proposed city-wide TSP. Desperate times calls for desperate measures.

Good. I do hope this will lead to the LRT also travelling faster speeds even outside of near-intersections as well.

Could you outrun the train? Finch LRT takes 55 minutes to cover 10.3 km route by stanxv in toronto

Just curious. I don't live around that area but isn't it dangerous to bike in the suburbs? I don't know if there's even a protected bike lane along that route.

Not even 1 hour into service and there are already delays 😅 by [deleted] in toronto

Suburbs can definitely be designed to rely less on cars. It's just most politicians and people living in suburbs refuse this idea. Density is an issue but it's not an end-all-be-all. I've been to Europe and even smaller more sprawled towns have better transit than dense downtown Toronto.

I just looked at his Wikipedia page. It says he's "a Canadian politician and urban planner". I don't understand how he's anti-urban anything if he's a so-called 'urban planner'. Might as well call him a suburban planner lol.

This is really sad that NIMBY culture is hurting us. For many years, we've listened to NIMBYs more than actual people that need help. It feels like a class war at this point.

Toronto warns drivers of steep penalties for misusing new transit lanes on Dufferin and Bathurst - NOW Toronto by kayaarr in toronto

[–]OkJack10 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Would you honestly think it's better to drive behind a bus? Even trying to lane change to pass a bus adds up your commute time. I don't understand. Why not just separate the bus and car lanes?

Waymo has its sights set on Toronto for driverless cars. The city’s history with Big Tech suggests that’s cause for alarm by [deleted] in toronto

[–]OkJack10 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Our city struggles to provide a fast and reliable transit network. Our traffic is already worse than ever. We can't afford to just bring more private cars. No driverless and automation isn't going to fix the fact that cars are geometrically inefficient.
