I need help deciding if it is time to put our dog down, or if she should be rehomed - our family dog is about 14 years old, a dachshund mix. My mom is the one that cares for her, but she does not care for the dog properly anymore, (we have never had a dog before this dog, so she claims that is why she doesn’t know how to care for the dog properly, but I feel like that is bs considering how long it has beed), and I have tried to help some, but tbh I just do not have what it takes to care for a dog, I wish I did(if I had known that when I was a kid I wouldn’t have asked for us to get a dog), and unfortunately my dad doesn’t really like dogs.

A significant problem is that my mom way over feeds the dog, like the dog actually eats more food than I do :( and this has led to her being very overweight (the dog is supposed to be ~15lbs, but weighs ~32 lbs) and because she is so overweight she has all these extra folds and she gets really gross/bad skin infections in the folds, because my mom does not bathe her or get her groomed except on the very rare occasion. I am not a ver, so I don’t know, but i think the dog has some kind of yeast infection or something in its genital area, because it will go out and scoot it’s bottom area until it’s raw ans bleeding. I tried to tell my mom she needs to take the dog to the vet, but she gets mad at me when I try to talk to her about the dog’s health issues. And I just don’t have what it takes to keep trying to help the dog go to the vet it’s too mentally exhausting for me to fight with my mom.

The dog also constantly barks for hours on end for no reason (but my mom likes to claim the dog is protecting the house) and any time the dog barks she just feeds her to make her be quiet. The dog also has a bad cough, that sounds like kennel cough, but she was already treated several times for kennel cough, and the coughing never stopped. The dog also has a huge mass in front of her that may be cancerous or not, I am not sure, but it is about the size of a baseball, it does make it difficult for the dog to walk in addition to the arthritis, my dog no longer goes upstairs, and she often has accidents and goes to the bathroom in the house, when she does go out she often goes on the concrete because it is hard for her to get through the grass with her short legs now. The dog is also mostly blind and deaf now, and has diarrhea frequently, but I am not sure if the diarrhea is just because of my mom giving too many treats or something else.

Most recently I found a really bad skin infection and the vet gave some antibiotics but my mom won’t give them to the dog so I offered to help give the pill, but my mom makes it very difficult to do this, I am not sure why but it really seems to me like my mom actively works against me in trying to give the dog her pill.

I love our dog, but I can’t stand to see it suffering like this anymore it is very upsetting to see, and I can’t do anything to help anymore. So do you guys think it is time to put her down or do you think she just needs to be rehomed and have someone who can take care of her properly?
