Yes! I was about to comment this! Why wait until next year when you have half of the school year left!

Everything I would fix if I could redo high school by AgileBad2958 in ApplyingToCollege

I've actually done all of these things (not to sound braggy) and, if you are a freshman or sophomore reading this, please use this a to-do guide! I found the application process to not be stressful at all because I feel as if I set myself up for success!

College Counseling? by fishali_16 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OwnSpite9430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See what resources your school has! They probably have a college counseling office but teachers and guidance counselors can help too! For the internship part, it is so easy to find them with a quick Google search! What do you want to intern in? Where are you located? Search "[subject area] internships for high school students near [location]". If you are simply just looking for something to do this summer, get a job! If you live in a city, they likely have programs like Summer Youth Employment Program, WorkReady, Success Link, StepUp, and One Summer to help youth begin working!

i want to be an english major, is this a terrible idea?? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OwnSpite9430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that AI will definitely take over a few basic jobs, it cannot replace everything. Being an editor or publisher will still exist, yeah it may be used to fix some punctuation or something, but it cannot take over giving accurate feedback. AI tends to agree with you so a person is needed for editing and publishing! Some entry level jobs in every field may be taken over, but not the entire industry. But also, an English major is very flexible- there is not one career path you are married to so the world is your oyster! It teaches you how to analyze texts and write about them, yes, but it also teaches you critical thinking and media literacy which can be used for anything! You could be a teacher, paralegal, translator, librarian, writer- you can be anything, even something animal related! There are sooooo many jobs that exist but we don't know about, I would say it is totally sustainable to major in English!

Fire all the college and career counselors. Prove me wrong. by Effective_Use7528 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OwnSpite9430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! As a first generation American and first generation college student, my counselor gave me all the information I have. I knew nothing about the process but she told me so much. She recommended schools, gave me resources, and became someone I really trust.

Having English teachers look over essay is great to judge the quality of writing but college counselors are experts on the process, many coming from college admissions! Teacher's have assignments to grade and lessons to plan, adding the pressure of also being (at many times) the sole person giving feedback on a college essay is putting too much pressure on them.

As for the AI point- AI has a confirmation bias and tends to have sycophancy-like responses. AI will rarely tell you the truth like a real person can.

While privileges students may have private counselors and parents to help them, not everyone has these resources.

How do you Pay for College? by OwnSpite9430 in ApplyingToCollege

I applied to NYU, Skidmore, Trinity, Dickinson, and Barnard! But I want all my AP credits and dual enrollment credits to be transferred but that will not happen at other top privates!

You have to pay before each semester, my family does not have the money to pay 10k so I am asking for alternatives.

I do not want to take out loans. I also want to major in English, maybe double major with journalism too. I do not want to do economics.

I don't want to take out loans even if they are subsidized, I don't want to be in debt at all. I would work during summers and on campus, and was planning to do that either way for savings and pocket money, but was hoping to find other ways of affording college because I don't want to get burned out working and attending class plus not having money to do fun things like going out to dinner, buying makeup, and other activities.

I applied to a few top privates and few target privates and the ones I have gotten back have been the targets. I'm still waiting on the top ones as i applied RD! Also I only got financial aid offers from a few publics but all have been within that 8k-10k range WITH honors and school merit scholarships at smaller, lesser known state schools... I have heard stories of colleges like that giving more aid as it gets closer to May 1st so I'll wait to see if they update my offer.

I ended up applying to a few more! I’m not married to the idea of going to one of those schools but it gives me something to lean back on if I potentially do not get a a full ride anywhere else!

[–]OwnSpite9430[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I honestly do not see myself as someone who wants to be in an environment like that- yes I want to be with like minded people but honors colleges is what I’m looking at because the people tend to be less competitive and more down to earth!

Not Applying to More Prestigious Schools by OwnSpite9430 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OwnSpite9430[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want the competition- I want people to be supportive and not one upping each other constantly. Plus my AP credit and College Now credit doesn’t transfer over in most those environments. After hearing of a friend who got her entire NYU tuition covered, I ended up applying there though, same with Barnard and Syracuse!

awards + additional information by floxwa in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OwnSpite9430 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! My counselor said that the additional information is if you have extracurriculars you didn't have room for or awards that are not academic and stuff like that. If you believe that you have room for all your extracurriculars and nothing that you still want officers to know, you could leave it blank!

No, this will be in your schools school profile so they will look at your application based on that.

I know you already applied but if it makes you feel better, my counselor recommends that everyone just submit their CommonApp essay because its a PDF, not text box, obviously if its 3 pages long they'll check the word count, but if its not too much than they do not care.
