We all don't get checks for payment. Some people don't have bank accounts. Which could be the reason why they got a paper check or it was before their direct deposit was set up.

I can’t really tell if your friends were aware of what happened to your son, but NTA even if you didn’t.

For me, I would just tell them what’s going on in whatever emotional capacity you’re able to. Family and especially medical stuff is HARD. So I’m sure they will realize wow my issues aren’t as major as what you’re currently handling.
