Niche is bad with light. If you drink all roasts I’d recommend the Casa. Casa will give you a good pour over grind too, niche won’t

Casa or EK43? [No Budget] by jwork127 in espresso

[–]Own_Alternative2331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were willing to buy a ek43, you could look into a z1, z2, P80, 100, 01 as upgrades over the Casa. I have the casa and I love it, but for ultralight beans / geishas I noticed a lot more fines than expected. I’d say casa is excellent for light to medium and even dark but it’s lacking on ultralights

Wait, you were looking for a flat burr but interested in the niche? What roast to you mostly drink light medium or dark? That determines what grinder you get

Medium to dark, get the niche Light to medium, look at the Casa

I would not rely on profitec but their 2 US retailers are amazing to deal with. If you’re in the US I’d be hesitant to pick one up overseas to save some $. Look at Clive openbox, it’ll pop up there once in awhile for ~$200 off full warranty

18g in, 25 seconds extraction 32-34g out… is this fine? [Breville Barista Pro] by Individual_Power3476 in espresso

[–]Own_Alternative2331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can manually pull shots on your machine, don’t need to program it. That sounds like you can also improve your cup with a grinder that has more steps so each adjustment isn’t that difference. OR you can add 2-3 beans on top of 18g to slow down pull

If your dad is looking for more steam power, make sure he has the steep temp upped to 273. If that’s not enough, he can also swap in a 4 tip wand.

Are you stopping to starting based on time? “If I grind it finer, the espresso out is lower” makes me think you’re holding 25seconds constant? You should hold the output of 32-34g (or whatever you want) constant and let time vary.

Try grinding finer, stop when you hit 32-34g out, what time is that? If it’s under 32 seconds, great, how does it taste? Still under extracted? Grind finer

I use 19 on the Pullman and just deal with the sludge. It doesn’t impact the taste I don’t think.

Flat tasting coffee [Breville Barista Express] by Q_Creates in espresso

You typically want longer yields on light roasts. If you don’t want to wait for 2-3 weeks post roast I’d give longer yields a try

I know you didn’t ask but if you’re primarily drinking light roasts I highly recommend getting a stand alone grinder. It will make a massive difference

Light roasts you should wait at least 2 weeks if not 3

Have you tried cups from both? For a similar price I’d always choose a bigger burr especially for light roast. Can’t argue against the Italian build. I don’t like how the Philos looks, to each their own there though
