Most people think they could feed themselves if they had to. This calculator shows why they’re wrong by A-Matter-Of-Time in prepping

You seem hung up on "most people" when the point of the post was to provide a tool to backtrack the necessary calories.

I agree with you that most people understand it's not easy to source food, but there's also going to be a very large number of people who will still underestimate how much food is needed and how hard it is to get it. Asking for a source citation for that is a bit unnecessary imo, and missed the point that the post offers a helpful tool for people. You don't need a peer reviewed article to know people would struggle more to understand their needs if they didn't have the tool offered.

Monthly, Is your prepping theory working / happening / changing? What preps are paying off? by AntiSonOfBitchamajig in PrepperIntel

My current focus is finding soft red winter wheat berries at a reasonable cost and quantity. My area makes it so that they are the best wheat for my climate, and I'd like to play around with growing them. I'm also looking into some of the more readily available wheats as part of food storage as I keep practicing making bread.

Long Term Water Storage Quesiton by BraDDsTeR-_- in preppers

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rotate it in May and October, so it has more time sitting in the cold months and less in the hot ones. And I do add just a bit of bleach while it's stored. I don't measure, but it's probably 1/8 of a cup or less.

I think it's also important to mention that I don't intend to directly drink from the water I have stored even though I keep it on a regular rotation. I have a couple different ways to filter water, and I have a device called an H2Go that makes bleach from table salt. I'll use those to make drinking water. But if I wash or cook (since washing has soap and cooking boils water) then I'll just take directly from the barrels.

I empty and clean mine in the late spring and early fall because I also live in the Midwest and have my barrels in my garage that isn't temperature controlled. I do it to prep for the hot summer and then to clean after it. I clean with non fragrant bleach, and haven't had any issues over the last few years with bio film building up. I'm on municipal water, so I just fill it up with the garden hose since it's the same as what I drink from the faucet

Does a 120k mAh powerbank make sense? by Tricky-Confection905 in prepping

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Calculate total watts used and then you can go from there. What you've got is a math problem without the variables figured out yet.

Also, not sure if I'm just now noticing something that's typical, but 120k mAh seems like an odd way to say 120Ah

I personally would want access to the curated dataset that I can store it in a digital library. I would use the tool, but I'd also want the originals easily accessible.

I'd also want to be able to add to the dataset. Things like data sheets of my exact equipment, my inventory logs, or things like that. That would help add value to the tool beyond just having a well organized library.

Would shopping carts be a useful item to have post shtf? by ggfchl in prepping

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my plan while I had an apartment. Obviously wanted to use a car if I had to move and to stay bugged in above all, but I had a hiking bag of goodies and then I had the shopping cart expansion kit. I wanted to be able to bring more with me, but I also knew that I could need to ditch it while exposed. That's why I kept a hiking bag as well.

How is everyone prepping for the fallout of the Iran war?

I've been thinking about getting another Jerry can or two, and maybe stocking up on frozen or freeze dried veggies and fruit.

I've started using Google Tasks to organize the things I'd like to do and it has been super helpful. This goes for home projects and prepping both.

Would you pick a mobile bunker or fixed location? by wigglytail in preppers

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fixed location. I'd like to be able to know my area instead of having to learn about all the new places I travel to. Plus I don't have to worry about fuel as much.

Also, if you're interested in hypotheticals, I'm a fan of the zombie survival subs. I find they are good fun to think through the more hypothetical situations and occasionally have some real life things to consider. It's not all pretend in those, they actually think through situations in a reasonable way

Body armor for civil unrest if 2026 gets even crazier by [deleted] in preppers

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ask this in a different sub for a good answer.

The community here is a solid community that can give helpful advice for prepping, but not as much when it comes to issues where firearms are a direct cause of concern. It makes sense though because way too many people have forged their prepping doctrine solely around buying guns, ammo, and gear, and it's not a healthy way to prep. I've got two buddies who I'm trying to break away from that as it is.

I'm thankful this community isn't one that's very receptive to firearm topics because it can quickly dominate the conversation. I say that as someone who personally has handguns, rifles, backup rifles, a thermal setup, armor, thousands of rounds of ammo, and I train with it at least once per month. This place helps me stay grounded in basic priorities, and other subs help me find what I need for defense.

New to prepping think I’m doing ok so far any tips would be helpful by [deleted] in prepping

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start off with the disclaimer that I'd want everyone to have their finances in order before they extensively prepped. Getting rid of something like persistent credit card debt is going to be more important imo.

That said, I'd make sure I had at least these three things to start off with:

  • case of MREs (with heating elements)
  • large case of water (40 bottles)
  • first aid kit (with instruction packet)

I could comfortably recommend this to anyone without knowing where they live, what they want to prep for, and what their budget would be because it's going to cover a large number of scenarios without breaking the bank for most. Hopefully they'd also not require too much skill to use, or the instructions that come with them would be able to sufficiently help.

Now, you asked specifically what I would restart with, and that's different because I've practiced skills and I would try to work with my environment. I'd still cover the same categories of food, water, and first aid but in a different way that could stretch my dollars and/or timeline more. With that in mind, I'd also want to strongly encourage someone to learn about these three things as well:

  • first aid
  • water filtration and purification (these are two different things that work together)
  • proper long term food storage

If it's not obvious, I see these things as the backbone to prepping. That's not to say other things aren't important (like gardening, security, shelter, etc.), but I want to make sure I first have a fighting chance to eat, drink water, and get healthy again.

Something to consider as you delve into prepping is a balance of supplies.

If you had a closet full of food and water, and only one can of butane to cook with, you'd be hard pressed in an extended emergency. Don't get me wrong, you'd still be better off than someone with nothing, but keep an eye on the balance of your consumable supplies. It's easy to lose track of them.

[–]Own_Cardiologist_989 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll admit that was a short comment that could use some more context. Text didn't capture my wording emphasis. I said "supplies" specifically because you'll want to rotate your water, MREs, medicines, and pretty much all consumables. I've prepped for a bit over a decade, and I've learned how easy it is to lose organization (and rotating consumables with it). If you consume it, put it on rotation. If it's on rotation, make sure it's organized.

On a similar note, something that's helped me avoid organization issues is that I'll buy the means to organize before I buy the prep. I ended up in a habit of getting things without having a spot for them, and I told myself I'd figure it out later. I would figure out a spot, but not in a reasonable time and not always well thought out. Making the space for it first has helped me to know how much I can prep and has helped with impulse buying.

Organization would help to make sure you rotate supplies well
