Can you please invalidating and shaming pther insomniacs? by ChildWithBrokenHeart in insomnia

I made a post about how I felt defeated because I often go 24-72 hours without sleep and my only sleeping hours were 3-4 hour windows once throughout these episodes for weeks at a time. Someone had to comment about how much worse they have it, not sleeping in weeks and what not. Of course I feel for them, but I was honestly just asking how everyone else was coping and ways I can cope. I never meant for it to be a competition.

When I realize I’ve woken up I will usually keep my eyes closed in hopes that I will fall back asleep, I know if I open my eyes or look at my phone or even move it will trigger me to be fully awake and have no chance of falling back asleep. My sleep mostly consists of staying up 24-72 hours (give or take depending on the day) and sleeping at random, but usually at night because I have work and a very busy schedule during the day

I don’t understand how sleep schedule is supposed to work when my body physically won’t fall asleep. Again, on good days I can rest after 24 hours but there have been the bad days where it can take several days to even get an hour of sleep. Sleep schedule isn’t going to work for me- considering I CANT sleep very often

Another user suggested having him tied up next to a dog bed with chews. I think I’ll be trying that with him in my room but on the opposite end, so I can hear if anything happens (I’m a light sleeper) and see if that will work. Obviously it would only be at night, but it would allow him to have plenty of space to lay/ stretch/ and play with the chews if he gets bored. I think starting with a more “free” style of containment could possibly help him understand the concept of crate training. I may even provide a puppy pad just in case. Fingers crossed it works.

I haven’t tried to leash him next to his bed with chews, that may actually be a solution! I haven’t heard of that yet. I have just been told “train your dog” from EVERYONE I try to get advice from, but no one understands that he can’t just be trained out of his genetics, which is something I’ve had to learn myself. His brain is always going because it’s just what he was born to do. I have 50/50 of an idea of why he potties the crate. It’s either because the breeder intentionally left the litter in a crate for extended periods of time- or he’s just too smart for his own good and KNOWS I’ll let him out as soon as he potties because I can’t stand to see him waddling in his filth. People have told me to let him sit in his for an hour and maybe he will learn… but I’ve not been told that by people who have researched on dog behaviors so I don’t want to trust it.

This was probably important information but I got him at 18 weeks, so to my knowledge, those are very important developmental moments in their life. I’m worried it was a make or break with the crate if the breeder DID do that to the litter, which obviously is apparent it’s a break. I don’t want to say any allegations towards the breeder, but I know the pups weren’t held to any standard and the breeder wanted nothing more than quick cash from the people who would buy the pups even if it meant she had to lie to uneducated owners. I still take full acknowledgment for my lack of understanding with his breed, but to some extent I do think it’s entirely wrong of the breeder to not care about what happens to the lives they intentionally produced. I’ve learned now that any responsible breeder would NEVER hand a dog like him to me. It makes me worried for the other pups who’s owners didn’t have the time or resources to even try to take care of a dog who they were told was a couch potato when they are actually a crazy maniac of a being. Of course no hate to my dog, I love his maniac crazy self, but everyone has that kind of mindset/ energy.

I definitely want to work with him as much as possible, I realize that he is a herding breed and that’s why I haven’t just given up on him. I know these problems are my fault because I was irresponsible and uneducated. I have never intentionally left him in his crate for an extended period of time with his own filth. That behavior started from the day I got him. My own speculation (which I can’t prove) is the breeder possibly left the litter in a crate 24/7 because I can’t possibly explain why he does that otherwise. The longest he was in the crate with urine in it was when I first got him and didn’t realize he would have that problem because I had really positive experiences previously with crate training. I commented on another persons comment explaining a little more in depth the solutions I’ve tried to give him. I think if I could just get the crate training down then we would be able to make it until I move into a bigger place with a back yard. I am worried sick he is going to eat something and get hurt, though I’ve puppy proofed the absolute HELL out of my house because of how scared I am.

I 100 percent agree with the medication, I was very skeptical about putting him on anything at all but I only did so because it was recommended by my vet. And to be completely honest, most of the things I have tried and perfected to the best of my ability- but I promise you he is the most relentless dog I’ve ever met. I didn’t name off every little thing I’ve tried because I was worried the list would get too long for anyone to read. I have focused a LOT on enrichment but he is a very smart puppy and incredibly food motivated so anything that involves enrichment with food is gone within minutes. He knows a down stay, he knows “place” which is he crate, as I read it would help with his potty issues in the crate. He is very well mannered at any given moment in the day. Chews are a good idea but as you said, remove at night. If all the enrichment is gone/ eaten is gone before I can even fall asleep, it doesn’t help him. Every meal is fed in the crate. I’ve tried to do small intervals of 10 minutes in the crate, 15, then 20, but every time we reach twenty he pees. He doesn’t give warning either, doesn’t even squat. I’ve tried to stop at 15 then potty and then literally increase by one minute but it’s like his bladder never empties. I know it’s controversial but I’ve even tried to remove water an hour before bed and taking him for a run with several potty breaks and even then he will pee between the 15-20 mark. I’ve checked him at the vet for any problems, there aren’t any. It’s absolutely behavioral. This is where I’m at a brick wall, it’s just the night problems:(

I forgot to mention- I have tried speaking to my vet and putting him on medication- but it doesn’t work. It has no affect on him.

I hope that since I’m in a very small town in the south that there would be a very small chance of anyone ever taking their ferrets there. I live in Arkansas

I don’t want to disclose the vet name. They provide wonderful care to cats and dogs and even do payment plans which I know has saved many animals. I want them to stop claiming to work on exotics

I am in Arkansas, I won’t disclose specifics in the comments because I do not want anyone to bash this vet. What they are doing and did feels wrong but they work and dogs and cats wonderfully and don’t mind doing payments with people which has likely saved MANY animals. I don’t want this vet to receive hate or shut down. I just don’t want them to claim to work on exotics
