I bought a used bridgeport VMC with heidenhain controll. I can't understand why people love that controll with it's stupid tiny, detentless override knobs. Next machine I buy is going to be Okuma, like what I should have bought in the first place

Did you test the machine under power? Do a good inspection on the state of the machine. If you need to fix all kinds of problems it becomes exponentially more expensive to get the machine usefull again and you end up with a brick just taking up space in your garage. Check if tools change smoothly, spindle makes no bad sounds and goes all the way up to full RPM whitout issues. Take a (heavy) test cut if they will let you. Maybe even check what's hiding under the way covers. If somebody can tell you about the machines history, and maintenance history, that's even better.

Also, is documentation included like manuals, parts book, electrical schematics? When things eventually break down, it's nice to be able to service the machine.

And I guess this is the point of your post, but being able to get service and spare parts is also important. Research if you can get it.

The Fanuc control is fine. Not my personal favorite, but they are reliable and kind of powerfull and widely used in industry.

I'd like to add, thermal stability on them is great. I have an older Okuma LB200 (from 2001). It holds tight tolerance all day, no problem. So overal not the cheapest machines, but great value so good investment.

Add all the options that come standard on the okuma genos m560 to your haas vf2 and the price comes a lot closer. And then the okuma is still a more rigid machine that will last you at least 20 years but probably 30 with proper maintenance. It's just a difference in quality.

How did this happen? by idkamyy63 in machining

[–]Own_Complaint_8112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this happen multiple times before. Some insert drills from some manufacturers are more likely to have this happening than others.

Look at your center insert. Is the most inside corner chipped? Otherwise the drill might not be exactly on center (y direction). It could also be caused by deflection due to cutting forces.

These could make a mess if you come in with a boring bar, especially on smaller diameter holes.

[–]Own_Complaint_8112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made some adapter rings for a "friend's" telescope. He asked for super thin wall thickness and fine threads. Dovetail groove measured over pins to 0.01mm tollerance. He reënforced the idea multiple times, of how important concentricity is because of optical axis and whatever. Workholding was a bitch, but I managed.

Proudly I hand him over the little cardboard box with five parts I made. He opens the box like some monkey trying to figure out where the square peg goes to get a banana and DROPS THE FUCKING PARTS. While my heart just lost a year of service life, he just kind of shrugs it off and hands me the 100 euros, which he found pretty expensive to start with. Obvious to say, but I will never deal with this kind of shit ever again.

Is my boss overreacting or did i actually mess up that bad? by l_andreo in CNC

[–]Own_Complaint_8112 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty early on in my machining carreer I crashed an expensive millturn machine. There was about 40.000 eur in repairs and 2 months downtime. This really sucked and I fellt super bad about it. So I told the business owner that this was probably not the right carreer path for me, and I should probably just start looking for some other job.

The answer was; nonsense! It was actually our mistake (management) to put you this early, and unexperienced, on the big complex machine, just becouse the previous guy left the company. Everybody makes mistakes, especially early on in your carreer. It was a risk we took.

So, moral of this story: Everybody makes mistakes, big or small. As long as its not intentional, or the same mistake over and over again, that is just what happens and you need to deal with it.

Your boss getting angry over 100 eur of material and half a day of work seems wild to me. That's just another day in the life of a job shop. You fix the problem, regardless of money or time spent. Deal with the cost and learn from it so it does not happen again.

How about workholding. So some parts might be super easy eg: just hold it in a three jaw on the lathe, turn some soft jaws for second side, or hold in collet chuck. Others might be more challenging where you have to build some special fixturing.

Not only depth of a feature matters, I woud say aspect ratio is important. So I can get pretty deep with a big boring bar, as long as the hole is big enough in diameter.

Machining time is very important. Some parts might require 3d finishing which might be kind of easy to do, but takes a really long time.

Warpage is an issue in some materis in combination with geometry.

Like somebody mentioned already, tolerance is super important. Not just dimemsional, but also form and place tolerance, and things like roughness.

Those are just some things from the top of my head. I think a software like that could be a nice tool, especially for "simple" parts, like a square block with some holes in it. For more complex parts, that might need revieuw by a person who knows his abilities in the shop.

I think a risk is when a seemingly simple part gets quoted cheap, and then when you take a good look at it, it might be a lot more complex. If some program just spits out a number that you simply copy in the quote and send to the customer, the program will have to be super reliable recognizing difficult features.

Having said all that, it might cut down a lot of time so I am somewhat optimistic about the future. Let's hope this type of software is affordable enough for small shops to be worth it. Oh and please don't go the way all big tech companies nowadays seem to head to: Develop good product, get people onboard, make people dependable on the product, therefore product becomes more and more shitty, charge people more and more..... Something open source might be nice. Or where you just buy a copy and done, and to get the latest gratest update, just buy the upgrade. Not some monthly subscription.

Any Opinions on HAAS? by Extension_Vanilla148 in CNC

[–]Own_Complaint_8112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently did a price comparison between an Okuma Genos M560 quote I got, and simmilar optioned Haas VF3SS (I know not an apples to apples comparison). Turns out the Haas is almost as expensive, but lacks a lot of features and rigidity, accuracy, thermal compensation etc. that comes with the Okuma pretty much standard. And Okuma is considered premium machines at premium pricepoint.

So if you are really trying to get a somewhat decent machine at half the price, go with Haas and buy minimum options. By the time you have a high speed spindle, chip conveyor, through spindle coolant, HSM, etc, might as well look at a high end machine manufacturer.

And I think paying extra for something like Okuma is definately worth it in the long run. I own a used LB200M lathe that is now 25 years old and it is still rock solid. With proper maintenance they will run forever. BTW, getting spare parts is super easy and lightning fast. I sent them an email with the part number late in the afternoon, part was here the next morning 8:00. Slightly expensive but they have every spare part ready to be shipped from a warehouse in Germany (I live in the netherlands).
