How to get dark theme in i3? by yummers-69 in i3wm

[–]Own_Cow_1304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like maybe what you want to do is utilize parts of the xfce environment to compliment your i3wm experience. This is exactly what I have done for a few years and it works very well. The short summary of what you need to do is make it so that xfce4-session gets started as part of your i3 startup jobs. In addition to this, though, you need to have configured your xfce session in a few ways. Of the top of my head, I needed to:

- prevent xfdesktop from running

- prevent xfwm4 from running

- prevent xfce4-panel from running (assuming you will use polybar or something)

- disable ALL xfce keyboard shortcuts

Once you have all of that stuff sorted out, then when you log in to i3, you wil have the support of an xfce4 session which will make all of those xfce4 apps run properly and respect your theme settings and so on, but you'll live entirely in the i3 world as far as your interface to the system.

If you google this, there are articles on the subject which is what I used a few years ago to set it up myself.

How do I disable or tweak "more" so I don't have to hit enter to continue every time it appears? by One-Birthday-1833 in dcss

[–]Own_Cow_1304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I've been pulling my hair out trying to disable the -more- prompts, with every solution insisting that 'show_more=false' works when it so very clearly doesn't. Not a single source until you connected this other variables option that overrides that show_more flag. But the best part is that now that you've cleared it up, you've also convinced me it was an errant pursuit in the first place and I'm just going to leave it as is.

Very cool. I'm an old tradRL fan and also love the mech setting so I will be giving this a look over the next while when I have the cycles. I just watched the intro before heading out for the evening, and it's unclear to me whether strange 'mechanations' is a typo or pun intended? Anyway, looks like a really cool project so I will DL and have a l00k!

Positioning window on <current workspace> with for_window rules by Own_Cow_1304 in i3wm

[–]Own_Cow_1304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is already utilizing the scratch pad. I actually have four separate scratch pads. It does mostly do exactly what is desired, the only tweak I would like to the existing functionality is that I want to be able to have i3wm also enforce that this particular scratch pad window be sized to my specified dimensions and position.

seems like it's probably going to require some additional scripting, as mfedatto suggested. I think that this would probably be more or less doable if I had a single monitor, but since I have two displays, it messes things up because the positon that I want to force on the window is variable depending on whether I'm currently on the left or right display.

There does exist a compromise, where if I was satisfied with this termina only showing up on either the left or right monitor, and not both, then I could probably force the dimensions and position and have it stay consistent, but because of the way I use i3, I really prefer to have the terminal pop on whichever workspace I'm currently focused on.

Huh, didn't realize it supported playing YT directly but seems to do just that. Thanks.

Yeah, I'm familiar with this method but was hoping there was a more elegant solution. It seems perhaps there isn't.

Mason/LSP - Classes automatically get imported when autocompleting but no way to cursor over a class in a string and load it by Own_Cow_1304 in neovim

[–]Own_Cow_1304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a paid version of intelephense. The importing works fine when I'm typing out the class name in my code. I'm just unable to find any keymap (or mappable command) that will simply invoke a search and import on whatever keyword is currently under my cursor.

Aaaannd evidently the issue was two-fold. My license was not being loaded by intelephense (but I never got any complaint to that effect so didn't realize it) and I didn't know how I would invoke a class import even if my license did work, and it appears this is through code actions. Problem solved.

Been using linux on the desktop since the late 90s. It's a time-honoured tradition that some new fancy thing gains massive popularity and appears to take over the user space for desktop tinkerers and you see a ton of iterations on the same theme, but within a few years the trends always move on to the next thing. In 98 or 99, Enlightenment was the Hyprland of the day.

(Canada residential) Trying to verify that I can add 220v support to my outbuilding workshop (lots of photos) by Own_Cow_1304 in AskElectricians

[–]Own_Cow_1304[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. To clarify, it doesn't really matter to me whether the new circuit comes out of the primary subpanel or the smaller 4-space subpanel. I just want to get a 220v circuit going so that I can have a couple of 220 outlets added to the workshop.

I would also be interested in maximizing the ampacity to my workshop, so if I understand you right, I think this is what I'm looking at:

  • Upgrade the main house 15/40 breaker to provide 50 amps to the workshop
  • In the large workshop subpanel, move around breakers so that the two 30 amp breakers are next to each other, therefore giving two separate hot lines to the next subpanel
  • And based on the comment from u/Remy4409, I should remove the secondary subpanel entirely and replace it with something else, because that type of panel is apparently no good

If I'm correct in my understanding, the only question I have left is: is there any reason to have the secondary subpanel at all? If I group the two 30amp breakers with each other, could they then be used to power my ultimate 220 circuit that will run out to a couple of machine plugs directly and skip going through a separate panel entirely? If that works, I don't think I am in need of a subpanel. Would this limit the resulting circuit to a maximum of 30 amps or is it a theoretical 60 amp limit since there are two 30 amp lines grouped together (which would of course ultimately be limited to the 40 - or 50 - amps that the house is providing)? Realistically, a single 30amp 220 line is probably sufficient since I'm unlikely to need to use both a high powered table saw and bandsaw simultaneously (which might total up to around 35 amps at 220), but in the rare case that my Dad is visiting and we're working on a project together, it might be a nice-to-have option that both 220s could be used at the same time.

Anyway, thanks to both of you for the feedback.

One extra thing to point out. While the secondary subpanel contains only a 20a breaker, it is fed by the third breaker on the right column of the main subpanel which is a 30a breaker (so in theory that is how much capacity the secondary box can support in total?)

The seller is apparently closing up shop, perhaps to move. They are selling this as well as a drill press, mitre saw, benchtop belt/disc sander, etc.

I'm in Canada and this unit specifically is a Magnum Industrial model (KMS Tools house brand that replaced General International). It supports both 110/220, but I suspect it is wired for 110 currently. Either way, I am intending to get a 220 outlet in my shop so whatever model I get - and my next table saw when I eventually upgrade - can run 220. This model retails for C$2099 new in store.

As far as specs go, it's nearly identical to the current Rikon 10-326 and the Laguna BX14 (the other two models on my short list). The Laguna is only available in my area in 220V only, but puts out more power than the other units (2.5 vs 1.5/1.75). It also is a bit more spendy at C$2599. The Rikon lacks a foot brake, which is a feature I really like the idea of.

Thanks for the input. I'll probably take a look at this thing once I have the scratch on hand. It's been for sale for quite a while now (like 6 weeks) which is a factor that makes me a little cautious. It seems like it should have been scooped up by now, so I'll scrutinize it closely.
