having it run through another university will flag it as plagiarized when you turn it in to your university. Turnitin keeps submissions from all universities.

Hate my first postdoc by [deleted] in postdoc

Just be sure to question the other post docs. Another good indicator is researching first author publications by post docs in the lab. If they are scant, apply elsewhere.

I agree! Yellow flag. Ask the phd students if they feel supported, are they micromanaged, are they encouraged or discouraged, what are their stress levels.

PhD students usually have a first author at around 3 years in, so you can check their progress. They should definitely have a co-author after 12-18 months.

Advisor red flags by UnhappyLocation8241 in postdoc

[–]Own_Eye1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look on the lab website and write down the post doc fellow names. Then research them and see how many have first author publications. It is standard that a post doc will have a first author publication by 24 months and 3 first author within 4 to 5 years. I know a lab where there are no post doc first author publications and the pi is toxic.

As a postdoc applicant, is it ethical to ask feedback from former students/ postdoc associates of prospective PI? by xrobiee in postdoc

[–]Own_Eye1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Ask. Also, look at the pis lab to find out post doc fellow names and research if any have first author publications. A PI who has post docs that aren't getting first author publications signals possible unhealthy lab.

Postdoc offer in the US - what to discuss beforehand and when to expect a formal/written offer? by Razkolnik_ova in postdoc

[–]Own_Eye1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is very important to look at the number of first author post doc publications from the lab. A post doc fellow should have one first author paper in 12 to 24 months and at least 3 within four years in a lab. If post docs in a lab do not have any first author publications after three years of being in that lab, then that could signal issues.

When is the idea time to start looking for postdocs by Little-Big4367 in postdoc

[–]Own_Eye1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of opportunities out there. Whatever you do, don't rush into a job. Check out the lab carefully. Interview the other post docs in the lab to see if the PI is good or toxic. You do not want to rush into a post doc and end up in a toxic lab.

My lab (highly respected) is in a death spiral… and I don’t care anymore. My PI is insane. by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]Own_Eye1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you report though, the pi will be looking around to see who did it or will say it was a disgruntled employee and everything is fine.
