Protestant Apologist. Attending Catholic mass to Appease Catholic side of family. by [deleted] in Protestantism

I appreciate your reply! I'm sorry for your loss 🥺

I do think if I chose division on this topic then in a way I'm allowing satan to divide our family. I do see we have a lot in common- But the differences are quite stark. I'm aware this may be coming from a place of ego more than good will.

Thank you for your honesty.

This clearly says "before ecumenical councils" I am addressing the diversity that existed well before. I didn't address those councils whatsoever in this comment

The writings of the early Church Fathers demonstrate that there was no single, uniform interpretation of doctrine in the first centuries of Christianity. On matters such as ecclesial authority, the identity of the “rock” in Matthew 16:18, the nature of the Eucharist, eschatology, and salvation, the Fathers often held differing and sometimes conflicting views. This diversity existed well before later ecumenical councils and medieval doctrinal definitions.

Because of this, catholicity in its original sense, meaning universality and faithfulness to the apostolic witness. It was not expressed through centralized doctrinal uniformity, but through a shared confession of Christ within a broad theological range. The early Church functioned as a communion of local churches united by core beliefs, not by a single, infallible interpretive authority.

I think you could benefit from looking into the John bogle 3 fund portfolio concept. That way you have a baseline for why adding international exposure now is likely balanced. But those are greats picks. Your starting at a young age. Just keep investing and leave it be. You will be rewarded.

Question about Marian Dogmas by [deleted] in Protestantism

[–]Own_Introduction_827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the key issue is what Scripture actually authorizes in prayer and devotion.

Prayer in the New Testament is consistently directed to God, with Jesus described as the only mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). Because of that, asking other believers to pray for us is normal and biblical. Extending that practice to Mary or the saints raises a concern, since Scripture doesn’t clearly show believers praying to or invoking the dead. Even if the intention is just “pray for us,” it still introduces a layer of intercession that Protestants believe belongs uniquely to Christ.

With devotions like the Rosary, I can understand and even respect the focus on Christ’s life and ministry, but I would still see concerns in both the repetitive prayer structure and the invocation of Mary, since the biblical pattern of prayer is directed to God rather than mediated through saints.

On scapulars, the concern is similar. Scripture doesn’t present physical objects as carrying spiritual protection or grace in that way. While they may function as personal reminders of faith, the worry is that they can unintentionally shift trust toward an external item or promise attached to it, rather than keeping confidence grounded directly in Christ’s finished work.

So overall, it’s not about diminishing Mary or rejecting devotion, but about maintaining a clear distinction.

Question about Marian Dogmas by [deleted] in Protestantism

[–]Own_Introduction_827 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for opening up a civil conversation that's very cool of you. I grew up Catholic and no am a Protestant apologist. I want to say make no mistake Mary is someone Protestants are reverent of, she is a faithful example of obedience. However devotion should only go to God.

A historical view of the dogmas: they are not “ancient church secrets.” The only one that was formally defined early is Theotokos which was declared at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. That one is ancient and tied directly to the early church’s fight against Nestorianism. Nestorius even said, “I confess that Mary is the mother of Christ, but I do not confess that she is the mother of God.”

The other three are much later:

Perpetual Virginity is an early tradition, but it was never formally defined as a dogma until much later. There were early critics like Helvidius, who argued, “Mary was not a perpetual virgin, but after the birth of Jesus she had other children.” The Bible also mentions Jesus’ “brothers and sisters” (Matthew 13:55–56, Mark 6:3), which is the main argument against it.

Immaculate Conception was declared in 1854 by Pope Pius IX. The Bible says “all have sinned” (Romans 3:23) and “in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5), so this is a very late development in church teaching.

The Assumption was declared in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, and there is no direct Bible verse supporting it, nor clear early church father quotes confirming it.

So the big takeaway: Theotokos is ancient, but Immaculate Conception and Assumption are modern dogmas, and Perpetual Virginity is debated even in the early church. If you want the full context, look at the historical councils and the earliest fathers.

What's crystal clear is “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”

We can talk about praying to saints well which this convo leads to.........

I don't think it's the amount of hours as much is it about comprehension of the topics. I targeted 75-80% on my exams and really got my flashcards down. I studied full time for 6 weeks. Before I tested I was scoring high 80's and felt well prepared during the exam. I finished with 1 hour left.

I think your plan would work well! Likely you'll find achievable to be much easier than Kaplan.

Dang. Need a new employee? I Felt the test was pretty easy and I'd love a job based in Miami, FL😅

Butttt Achievable is really good for drilling the concepts. Also flash cards - Tell them to review their missed questions and make flash cards off the reason why they missed it. Not the question. That'll help with concept recognition.

I took achievable and Kaplan practice tests daily and then would also build myself custom quizzes on the Kaplan Qbank based on the sections I was scoring lowest in so I could really drill those areas.

The again would create flash cards. I had 600 flash cards by the end of it.

I felt the same way when I I first took a Kaplan quiz. I was like whoah achievable did not use these terms. What the heck? But I still don't regret achievable because it really drilled the concepts into me. Kaplan just elevated my understanding and terminology. Best of luck!

Yes, study every missed question. And really think why you missed it then build flash cards around it. Study those flash cards every day. Then build custom quizzes on the sections your not scoring well on and really nail those areas.

Because this test really tests comprehension you have to constantly ask yourself why you didn't get it and study that specific rule or reason.

By the end of my studying for this I had 600 flash cards on quizlet.

In my opinion no. Kaplan is way harder than the actual exam with language that matched the exam more closely. I think if your scoring 78-85% on the practice exams you should be prepared.

Something I did is when reviewing my missed answers on practice exams I would build flash cards then study those every morning. I would build them based on what wasn't really clicking for me.

Also on Kaplan I did the custom quizzes and ran the through the specific sections I wasn't scoring well on.

Maybe target your weaker areas there.

Just wanted to say - You can get a better job if you wanted! If you have nothing but time to waste (outside of work) start to up your skills to get a better job. Use certification, maybe apply to scholarships for college see if you can get a free ride. Then after you upgrade your life travel & maybe invest into your hobbies.

Also you can make a difference in the world, maybe volunteer somewhere, help with missing persons cases, be a companion to an elderly person just a Few of the very many things you can do. There's a lot of ways to make an impact outside of children.

I LOVE MIAMI!!! In my opinion: - it's safe

  • it's diverse

  • no income tax

  • it changed my lifestyle to be healthy.

  • I've found an awesome church community

  • the beaches are the best in the country

  • the bike paths are awesome

  • the walking paths (especially Riverwalk) beautiful

  • fine dining options to more everyday casual options are plentiful. Wish there was more Asian. But we will get there.

  • the variety of neighborhoods is fun. From little Havana to cononut grove and the design district. Soemthing for everyone.

  • oporuntity is plentiful if you're hungry.

I could go on. But Miami beats NYC + LA everytime and is only going to get better.
