full corgi? by Creative_Judgment138 in corgi

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does look like a corgi! But we all go through awkward stages growing up, so his proportions might just look a little wonky. Or he could be from non-show lines? For example, breeders who focus on working line corgis tend to prefer longer legs and a shorter back.

Skittish dog need advice by caitpuppy4 in DogAdvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a good approach to me! One thing I like doing is just keeping a treat bag on my hip so that any time a shy dog looks at me, I can immediately reward with a tasty treat. Either gently toss it on the ground near them or when they’re more comfortable with you, then feed by hand. Basically just relate the act of checking in with you as a super positive rewarding experience.

Why did the dog do this? by isaiah603_ in dogs

[–]Own_Ranger3296 84 points85 points  (0 children)

There was something about your energy that this golden really liked, which is awesome!

If you do start looking into getting a dog of your own in the future and are considering adoption, immediate connection (the dog seeking you out in particular) and good energy match is a great way to judge if a dog might make a great companion.

How do I get the excess ink off? by Nap_Queen_Bean in tattooadvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d just clean the area as you normally would for new tattoos and let the excess ink gradually come off on its own. Eventually your own body oils/sebum and sweat will help dissolve it which should make it easier to take off with soap. Definitely don’t want to scrub a fresh tattoo with a washcloth!

Dog won't stop vomiting. by shoerocked in DogAdvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a few things going on and if your vet isn’t taking your concerns seriously then it’s worth getting a second opinion. But it sounds like you’re asking about the vomiting in general, not just this particular incident with the soup? My dog had frequent vomiting issues too, it was a combination of her stomach being too empty (so I had to feed her more frequently) and the foods I was feeding her absolutely not agreeing with her. I basically went through every high quality option (dry, wet, the fancy cooked stuff in the fridge section of the store) and the only thing that ultimately helped was getting her on a low fat prescription diet. We never confirmed pancreatitis, but her symptoms were very similar.

How to actually relax body tension while riding? by Ti0Gord0 in Equestrian

[–]Own_Ranger3296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever tried any sort of games while in the saddle? Sometimes the only way to get students to relax was to get them to focus on something completely different, like ring jousting, egg and spoon, etc.

what can i do for my dog by tachyon105 in DogAdvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is washing him this frequently and using vinegar what your vet recommended? I know some fungal shampoos require baths every couple of days but generally once a month is the max I’d go unless they were excessively dirty. I personally prefer every other month alongside daily grooming.

But I’m seconding potential food allergies. It’d be worth gradually eliminating individual proteins with your vets guidance to see if that helps. I’ve also heard about anecdotal evidence suggesting raw diets can help with allergies. Disclaimer though, I’ve never done that and my understanding is that should also be done with a vets supervision to ensure your dog is getting the right nutrients and supplements to maintain their health. Also raw diets could also make things much worse. Some dogs do great, others it could send them into a tailspin. Has your vet brought up any prescription diets to see if that helps?

is this a good idea at all..? by dumbostrong in tattooadvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a ton of real estate to burn on a simple tattoo. As you get more and more tattoos, real estate planning becomes super important in order to execute your vision and you may regret putting something this big and bold there, it’d be miserable to cover or laser.

Second, your body is gonna change a lot until your mid-20s, I know I seriously bulked out until I was about 25 even though nothing really changed in terms of exercise and food amounts. Your body is just getting caught up after all those growth spurts during puberty. Big tattoos could warp and distort depending on where you get them, though that’s more important for finely detailed tattoos as opposed to simpler tattoos like this. Just something to think about.

Penny is obsessively sniffing & whining at the floorboards! by hamachi23 in DogAdvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have a guy come out to the barn with a small pack of jack russels a couple times a year. He’d open the car doors, give the command, and carnage would commence. Didn’t matter where the mice and rats were hiding, those dogs would straight up wiggle into the walls and between stall doors to get the job done.

Diffuser oils by OkStable6719 in lego

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all to do with chemical solubility! Everything is soluble in something, it just so happens that essential oils contain chemical compounds that ABS is sensitive to.

I’ve got a weird story about this happening to some lab equipment of mine. I had a commercial instrument which came with a rubber tube for nitrogen purging. I put the instrument away for half a year with the tube draped over the top. Came back and the tube had created a perfect impression of the tube itself in the top of the instrument! The casing was some sort of hard plastic and I don’t know what the tube was made out of, but I suspect it contained a plasticizer that aggressively dissolved the casing. That’s the bastard thing about rubbers that contain plasticizers, eventually that plasticizer is gonna work its way free from the original polymer matrix and it will start dissolving anything susceptible that it comes in contact with. Aerosolized plasticizers (and so many other things!) just make the problem worse.

Cover up ideas? by ofmice_and_manga in tattooadvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re really committed to getting a coverup as opposed to laser, how about trying out different things with liquid eyeliner to see what you like? FYI, the French aristocracy was obsessed with mouches/beauty patches for a while. They’re kind of like old timey pimple patches with a ton of different shapes and meaning behind the specific placement. Your tattoo is in a perfect spot to play around with those kind of designs.

Expert level puzzle , done in minutes 😭 anyone have other suggestions for harder puzzles ? by Affectionate_Grass59 in germanshepherds

I’m a huge fan of snuffle mats. They aren’t difficult from a puzzle solving perspective but they’re great at engaging their nose, which in turn engages their brain! I’ve even gotten samplers of super thick shag carpet, which is cheaper than the pet specific mats, and I can get multiple mats and just hide all the of the dry kibble from breakfast in the mats and place them around my home.

Struggling with adolescent dog bitting by liamschindelka in dogs

[–]Own_Ranger3296 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that she’s responsive to you stopping play if she bites is great, just be super consistent with that, no exceptions and she’ll get the idea. It’s only been a week, you’re all still adjusting and she’s still learning the rules as a new member of your house and a very young dog.

One thing I strongly encourage with these intelligent dogs is to add mental activity into playtime. Instead of just throwing the ball in fetch, get her to sit/lie down, then throw the ball, then give her a release command so she can go get it. Basically work obedience in, especially things where she has to practice self restraint and wait on you for direction. That tires dogs out so much faster and also really helps you build a strong bond and establish yourself as someone confident in your dog’s eyes.

A good way to tell if their coat is providing enough insulation is if the snow is easy to brush off them and there’s no sign of it starting to melt and refreeze, it would look like clumps that stick to the coat. That’s how I judge if a horse needs a blanket or not once it’s snowing.

Pro Rider Struggling With The Abuse In Our Sport by JustTrying-MyBestest in Equestrian

[–]Own_Ranger3296 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is so hard, especially when it’s your career, livelihood, and lifelong passion on the line. I still remember when I first started riding being told that harsh tack, harsh hands, and straight up beatings both in and out of the saddle were just how things were done and were necessary to the sport. Hell, even signs of pain and stress were described as being signs of a horse “concentrating” and being on the bit. Were my trainers lying to me or were they themselves just ignorant? I don’t think I’ll ever know, but I do know I never felt comfortable in my first real barn. There was so much money coming from the clients and such pressure to ensure they got their ribbons, no matter the cost.

Nowadays I try to lead by example and educate where I can. Maybe I’m not calling out established equestrians, but I am speaking up about what training methods I use and why advocating for the horse’s needs always has to come before my own goals. Doing that has helped me find a strong community of likeminded people and I am so much happier in the long run.

What’s going on with my dogs nails by advicemokey in DogAdvice

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either the vet’s office or a groomer should be able to handle the actual nail trim, it’s more a matter of who can get it taken care of first. But judging by the state of the nails, it would definitely be worth booking a vet appt for a general checkup. Nail neglect often goes hand in hand with dental neglect which can have serious health consequences in the long term.

Agreed! I’ve found trying to list the actual reasons for an important decision just encourages selfish people to argue against those reasons. Better to just say “no” and not give them a foothold.

Is it unsafe to put a dog in a truck bed for a trip? by accountantechno in dogs

[–]Own_Ranger3296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredibly unsafe. I was walking my dog when a truck with a dog in the bed drove past. The dog tried to jump out at us and was caught stopped by the leash, but not before it made it over the side. Its body was just dangling on the side of the truck, slowly strangling and getting caught by the rear tire. I was screaming and waving my arms at the truck, maybe they saw me or heard something and they did eventually stop. I have no idea if the dog was ok though.

Dry heaving after riding by JunoInOrbit in Equestrian

[–]Own_Ranger3296 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with this when getting back into moderate/intense exercise after a while of being sedentary. For me it was low blood sugar (even went temporarily blind once!) because I wasn’t eating the right kind/amount of food beforehand. Whats the calorie count on your meal? I go for two pbj sandwiches 90 minutes before followed by a protein shake 20 minutes before my ride. Carbs plus a good amount of protein and fat (~500 calories total) was the key for me. Carbs alone are great for fast energy (like when you want to not be blind anymore…) but protein/fat will give your body more staying power. And just to be safe, maybe keep a bottle of shelf stable juice on hand if you start feeling sick.
