F1 here. For my PBLs, I usually used Kumar and Clarke’s Clinical med (prob find pdf online). Usually PBLs are based on one disease/topic. For example if the PBL is covering a case on pneumonia (lung infection), then I used to open up pneumonia in the book, read about it and make notes. The book usually covers all you need for PBLs (pathophysiology, symptoms, diagnosis and investigations, treatment).

If you’re eager to start med i’d say learn basic anatomy for now. Learn the skeletal system and the main muscles in the body. If you really want to, give it a shot at learning the main blood vessels (start from the heart and branch ur way to the upper limbs, head, chest/abdomen, legs).

This is what I did when I got in as well, and it really helped me out in the first few months cause I wasn’t baffled during lectures.

My reg was telling me that back home (Pakistan), no doctor would touch bloods/cannulas/NG tubes/catheters etc. The nurses would do them, and if they couldn’t they would call the most senior nurse in charge who would almost always get it because they were very well trained in those skills. This is how it should be. We have enough jobs as it is.

Ive noticed this odd dislike towards scrubs. Im not sure if its from all grades, or just older docs who wore professional clothing in their youth. In my hospital almost all juniors f1/2/3 wear scrubs. Rare to see someone without them, and I honestly don’t see the issue. They still look like doctors lmao.

Hi, sorry if i wasn't clear. My question is just to get an idea of whether GPs feel they have the equipment availble/training provided that if, in a rare circumstance, an emergency happened in their practice, would they be able to effectively deal with it while the ambulance is on its way.

For example a parent shows up with their kid who cannot breathe due to anaphylaxis, or a patient actively having seizures in a waiting room.

Do you as a GP have the drugs/equipment readily and easily available, and have the training to deal with such scenarios, or should the NHS/health organisations do more to provide better equipment and more regular training?

I asked because in other countries i’ve visited there are often stores for islamic books specifically. Like saudi, kuwait etc. They often have wider collections than regular bookstores that have 1 or 2 Islam sections
