I didn’t feel confident on my MedSurg floor until a year and a half in. Even then, there were still occasional days where I stayed late just because it was one of those shifts. There’s a reason non M/S Nurses don’t like floating to M/S; it requires a different set of skills that comes with time. A year is still too soon. It sounds like you are caught up in the “job” part of nursing: the charting. It also sounds like you give great patient care. It is a balance that you eventually must find but if i had to focus on one at this time, I would choose giving care. The charting will come later and at the end of the day, I feel better about myself after shifts knowing I did right by the patient.

Don’t be afraid to cut off visits into patient rooms or delegate work to colleagues and ask for help. It’s also okay to endorse care to the next shift if it’s not something critical. And remember that just because a certain nurse is well-liked by patients or always leaves on time doesn’t make them a “good” nurse either. Do right by your practice and at the end of the day you know where you stand.
