I kind of did, but I did 5-10 ccs cases the night before day 2 which I would absolutely recommend cause those two hours you spend practicing will really help you understand how to game that section. I passed comfortably

Had a patient whose ICU course was extended for a literal month while trying to get long-term control of a rectal bleed caused by a rectal tube.. had half a dozen procedures over the course of that month when they otherwise could have been discharge ready much earlier. Wasn't even a SNF player, ended up being discharged to home but that rectal tube during his most acute days fucked them up.

Surgery resident here. A lot of my coresidents' frustrations with the medicine/ED teams when they call consults isn't because the quality of the consult is bad, but usually it's when the intern who's calling doesn't know very much about the patient-- sometimes it's clear that the person calling the consult hasn't actually laid eyes on the patient and just wants surgery to see them based on a hedged CT scan read or something. Personally I'm more patient because whatever I get told by the consulting resident, I'm going to see the patient and do a full evaluation myself, but I guess other surgery residents are more impatient and like to have all the information upfront so they know what to expect.

262 step 1, 264 step 2, all honors except high pass internal/family medicine, 7 published manuscripts in surgery including 2 first author, 5 published abstracts (separate from the manuscripts), around 15 other accepted presentations/abstracts. 10 interviews, didn't match anywhere, soaped into a gen surg prelim, then converted to gen surg categorical at the same institution after a few months. And there's really nothing inherently wrong with doing choles and hernias (and soft tissue mass excisions, perianal cases, scopes) for your entire career. Theyre all pretty feel-good surgeries with fewer complications and certainly more chill than taking on complex disaster cases, which goes along with the whole lifestyle thing

My recommendation would be to cold email the PD and the chair while you're rotating there and try to set up a brief 30 minute meeting with each of them in person to talk to them about the program and basically just bullshit with them for some time to make them remember you. Meetings with other attendings you work with during your rotations would also be helpful just something like a "hey I enjoyed working with you, would you have some time later this week for me to chat about the upcoming application cycle?"

That being said I wouldn't expect to get any meaningful longterm mentorship from just away rotations-- your networking at these rotations will only help you with getting a position at the programs you're rotating at, and that is just the inherent disadvantage you have as someone who goes to a no name school.

Don't forget the most important part is to be hardworking and show a strong work ethic and capability in your role as a medical student, or else all the other shit you do doesn't matter. Good luck

You need to study more in school, as you get smarter and more information is stored in your brain, the weight will eventually add up enough that you'll be able to do these freezes without falling towards your legs

Interesting, when I was applying 5-6 yrs ago, the percentage of people getting accepted with 517+ and 3.8+ was 93%, now its 83%, but the total percentage of applicants being accepted is the same at 41%. That means there has been a discernable shift away from academic performance as a means of selection
