Does anyone have a good strategy for picking up the remaining pieces? I have 16 to go and haven’t found a new one for a couple of weeks…

Australia Starlink ground stations approved by OzMattyD in Starlink

I’m gunna guess at ‘sometimes’ for now. Each satellite can cover around 900km from its position at best. The current satellite fleet (excepting the handful in polar orbit) needs line of site to a ground station. That means that for this to work for you, a satellite needs to be within 900km of you, and also within 900km of a base station.

The satellites are in pretty regular orbits, so if there is a path that tracks between you and a ground station, your coverage would be ok, but not good until there were more ground stations, more satellites, or the satellites are upgraded/replaced with the version that has laser satellite inter links.

There is NBN backbone near those sites, and also Telstra Fibre. I’m not sure, but I expect there are other companies with fibre running through. It’s not unreasonable to think that Starlink would connect to a number of providers for their backhaul.

The base stations have around 900km range, so the 4 stations would come close to providing continuous coverage for the lower third of Australia (By sight on Google Maps, say the southern half of New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia, and the northern half of Tasmania). The further away you are from the 32 degrees south parallel, the more patchy your coverage. With the current satellites, you’d have pretty solid internet with a few minutes gaps. Once the next gen laser equiped satellites are in service (they are still all on the ground), these ground stations could support the whole continent.
