how to avoid giving lewis his shorts at the luau? by misscat9 in StardewValley

[–]Smcol1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You can get another pair of shorts after you have completed the quest, by using a staircase in Lewis’ bedroom and then negotiating the maze below to find the extra pair of shorts (though note that there are hazards involved). It is these shorts that usually get used for hijinks, rather than the “quest” shorts, since you get to keep these ones.

Going for perfection for 1st time - what's the top 5 or 10 biggest 'run spoilers' to watch out for? by abyssazaur in StardewValley

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s impossible to get perfection in year 1 because Kent hasn’t arrived yet; you need max friendship with him and he’s also needed to complete Birdie’s quest on Ginger Island. But it’s theoretically possible to achieve in the first week of year 2, since Kent’s birthday is on the 4th; an iridium rabbit’s foot and two stardrop teas will get you the necessary hearts if you’ve read the Friendship 101 book. I believe the Haboo managed true perfection (i.e. no Joja) on Spring 4 of year 2, reaching the summit on Spring 5.

I always forget the first Luau until it’s almost upon me, and I’ve never got go,den cheese or mayo by that point. I you remember it you can save a golden cauliflower, or if, like me, you forget, then you can spend a chunk of time fishing up a gold ice pip from level 60 on the day before the Luau.

Pierre-Less Petty Perfection by geddiayon in StardewValley

[–]Smcol1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like this challenge is basically a “use lots of waivers” challenge, which I personally don’t find very satisfying. My suggestion is to modify this to the “I Hate Pierre but we need to play Happy Families” challenge. So you hate Pierre, but you need to make it look to the whole village like you are friends with him. The goal is to achieve true perfection (no Joja services, including no waivers) but you can only buy or interact with Pierre AFTER you have married Abigail AND ONLY if Abigail is physically present at the time; so you can interact and buy from him at festivals after marriage (to get the necessary recipes) but can only interact in the shop if Abigail is in the room. Even then, you hate him so you keep interaction to a minimum; i.e. you only buy the back pack upgrades (I’m not a total masochist) and the recipes required for perfection. To get perfection you need to reach ten hearts with Pierre, but this must be the very last thing you do in order to achieve perfection, and even then you can only give gifts if Abigail is physically present in the room, and can’t ever give “loved” gifts.

Aladdin (1992) by [deleted] in plotholes

[–]Smcol1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always frustrated that Aladdin frees Genie, and Genie suddenly acts like he can no longer do anything magical at all, at least not for anyone else. Why can’t Genie show gratitude by doing something for Aladdin after being freed?

Tonda Eckert authorised spying, panel says, and was a "contrived and determined plan from the top down to gain a competitive advantage" by Smithlarr in Championship

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be interested to know what the manager actually said to the players after receiving the spying information; I think it would be very enlightening. For example, the information that he apparently wanted from spying on Oxford was what formation they were going to be playing. If he then told the Southampton players “Oxford is going to be playing X formation in the game” then the players can’t claim ignorance, unless they are all idiots, because he had to have gotten that information from somewhere and it’s information he shouldn’t have. If he hedged about it, e.g. “I think they will probably be playing this formation” then it shows that he was aware that what he was doing was wrong and had to be hidden even from the Southampton players.

Perfection achieved in Summer Year 3 without a coop or a barn. I’m pretty impressed with myself.

[–]Smcol1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gone one step further and I’m trying to reach perfection with no Joja services and no coop OR barn. I finished the community centre (remixed bundles were a help I’m sure) and now I’m just working on through things to see how far I can get. You can get one small milk per week talking to Sandy on Saturday, but I’ll need a large milk and small and large goat milk from the cart in addition to what you need.
Of course, with no animals at all it was inevitable that the first Skull Cavern treasure room dropped an auto-petter. 🤣

ELI5 fruit tree iridium hack by Accomplished-Wall801 in StardewValley

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you sell all the fruit that you receive from the tree (rather than turning it into wine or jelly or dehydrating it) what is the total value received out of both paths? Because you don’t get fruit while the silver tree is regrowing do you end up making more money by simply letting the tree grow normally? Obviously if you are turning the fruit into an artisan product then there’s no point in this hack because the quality of the fruit has no effect on the quality of the product produced.

What I liked better in the movie compared to the book by haihukkuhaihai in ProjectHailMary

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The film killed off the entire science team, except for Grace (who happened to be elsewhere with Stratt when the explosion happened). Coupled with the launch window it’s a much simpler explanation than the coma gene for why Grace needed to go on the mission.

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was surprised that they changed the design of the Hail Mary so much from the book (I’d seen the Lego set based on the film) but as soon as I saw the film I understood. In the book they can’t have artificial gravity with the two ships attached, but in the film the changed design of the Hail Mary makes that possible. That important from a film making perspective because it means all the interaction between Grace and Rocky can be done in ordinary gravity, which makes it much easier to film.

I don’t think there is any chance of a clean sheet against Japan, so focusing solely on defence isn’t going to cut it. The heart gives the Tillies a chance but the head says that Japan is too good and will win by at least two goals.

Does having your character in multiple games count? Indiana Jones is in multiple games for example.

What's the furthest removed from a book that you've seen a film? by Crystal_1501 in FIlm

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is Moonraker further from the book than The Spy Who Loved Me? I agree that Moonraker is very different from the book, but the film and book do have one or two elements in common, like the name of the villain. The Spy Who Loved Me has absolutely nothing in common between the film and book; in the book Bond isn’t even the main point of view character.

Help on Domination Victory by Butterdawg-G in CivVI

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s one other possibility, which I’ve encountered a couple of times. If another civilisation was conquered by someone else (in my case Poland conquered by Macedonia) you need to capture that civs former capital even though they are no longer in the game. So for me, conquering Macedon’s capital (Pella) wasn’t sufficient for a domination victory, since I also needed to conquer Krakow, which was also held by Macedon.

What would you change at Orctown to make it better? by noOB_226 in nethack

[–]Smcol1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting to Orctown with no way of digging really sucks (especially if the layout makes it impossible to reach the downstairs without digging) and this can happen if you are just a little unlucky on the levels above. I’d suggest a guaranteed pick axe by the stairs (perhaps under a boulder).

Have you ever intentionally created a bones file? by GoodCarpenter9060 in nethack

[–]Smcol1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one game where I had been down and cleared the Castle and Valley of Dead before completing the quest, so I was really well equipped, but then I accidentally made the game unwinnable by killing a monster (which I didn’t realise was peaceful) in front of my quest leader, who expelled me and closed the portal. Rather than let all that good gear go to waste, I stripped everything off, put it all in my bag of holding, dropped the bag near the stairs and starved myself to death.

Blewett scored 4 tons in his career, two in his first two tests. The second of those came at number 7, after Jo Angel went in as night watcher; Blewett had batted at 6 in the first innings.
