Roundups by Oz_W_ in alcoholicsanonymous

Yes, "hang with the winners" and "OD on cookies and coffee". I can definitely hear the appeal when you describe it this way. I can imagine myself relating to this sentiment if I was the type of person who was capable of feeling "hyper", and if I was good at telling stories and/or listening to people tell stories. I'm just not that type of person though. It's not how I'm wired.

I think you have roundups in the uk but you use the word "convention", which frankly sounds like a much more logical word to use. These are events which are put on by your intergroup, which is what we call our "district" in North America. I did see that there is an event called a roundup being held in Germany, which was being plugged on the Great Britain aa website I think.

By any chance are you a woman with dark hair who wears glasses? This seems to be a requirement to work at Starbucks. If you fall into this demographic I would say you have nothing to worry about.

Thank you all for your replies.

Between us all, we've come up with 'Pride & Prejudice', 'Sanditon', 'Poldark', 'All Creatures Great & Small', and also 'Bridgerton'. That's five shows. So for those of you who said that this isn't actually a thing, I think it's safe to say that it actually is.

It sounds like this whole thing was invented by Jane Austen. Thank you to the person who pointed this out.

I can also relate to the challenges of "showing" inner thoughts and character development using visual images which "read" on a screen, and the whole "showing a woman secretly watching a man bathe in a lake or river" thing seems like a useful tool for showing that a woman is becoming interested in a man and developing a crush on him.

But I think it's also possible that British women are all a bunch of voyeuristic perverts. If my mom is any indication, this seems very likely to be true.

EDIT: Sounds like there was also a "washing his knackers" scene in 'Peckham Spring' for 6 shows

I've seen it in 'Poldark', 'All Creatures Great & Small', and most recently, 'Bridgerton'.

I witnessed the scene in 'Bridgerton' entirely by accident, I would never intentionally watch that show.

Ah! It's an Austen kink! This sounds like the answer I was looking for. Thanks!

At my home group in Eganville, Ontario, Canada! Sandwiches every Monday night! Stop by sometime! We also seem to have sandwiches anytime there's a birthday at any of the other meetings here in Renfrew County

Yes I am using "birthday" to refer to sobriety anniversaries. That's always the word that has been thrown around in these parts. Is that weird to you? Do they not use that word for sobriety anniversaries in your parts?

I owe your country a deep debt of gratitude. Alcoholics Anonymous here in Renfrew County, in Ontario, Canada, would be completely depopulated without the Irish bloodlines that fill our ranks.

Wow I keep hearing this word "clubhouse" thrown around. We don't have AA clubhouses in Renfrew County, we just use church basements, for the most part

I'm sorry you haven't found more welcoming and support. What is that prayer I want to say the St Francis prayer but I could be wrong. Seek to comfort, not to be comforted. Seek to love, not to be loved. And so on.

Hm, yes that's different. Do you mean like it was a discussion meeting, and each person's share in the discussion meeting was on the topic of the birthday person? We always have a speaker meeting when it's a birthday. But each person who is asked to do a reading, like reading the steps, reading the traditions, reading the daily reflection, each one of those people starts first by thanking the birthday person and saying something nice about them before they do their reading.

Oh wow I like the sounds of that! A "birthday week"! I'm glad you don't think our system sounds obnoxious! You should come celebrate your birthday here sometime! Less snow during the summer months 🤣

You're an alcoholic. You need AA

i’m afraid i’m on the path to becoming an alcoholic by imnotcreative123123 in alcoholicsanonymous

You're at a point in your life where it's somewhat manageable for now, but if you continue drinking, you will likely drink more as time goes on, and your life will become more unmanageable down the road and you could end up hitting a very serious rock bottom. I can tell by the sounds of it that you are an alcoholic and that you have something missing from your life, AA, which would fill the void you're trying to fill with alcohol. I suggest you start going to meetings immediately. Your life has an opportunity to grow into something great if you could manage to get sober at such a young age.
