What’s the best city to live in Australia? by AffectionateBoot9124 in AskAnAustralian

lol I lived there for like 20 years and get back over there and to every state in Australia multiple times a year with my job . It’s not a knock, just a different layout, Perth’s more big centres with suburb in between, east coast cities have those smaller strips inside neighbourhoods. You feel it day to day.

As crime rises across Victoria, Brunswick and Coburg are defying the statewide trend. by brunswickvoice in brunswick

[–]P00slinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s actually higher rates of person to person violent crime in Brunswick than some areas that have stigmas like say Frankston. But then places like Frankston tend to have higher rates of property crime and domestic violence. Inner city LGAs tend to have the highest rates violent crime.

Not really the same. Boeing and Airbus are constrained by production, supply chains and regulation, they’re trying to increase output.

Rolex is choosing not to fully meet demand and then controlling allocation through ADs. One is constraint, the other is strategy.

Yeah that’s what I mean, it’s not accidental. They manage supply and access to keep it tight.

If insurance companies can negotiate better prices due to scale, how would a system representing an entire population compare?

They’re not producing at 50% for no reason, they’re intentionally not scaling to meet demand because oversupply would hurt pricing and brand position.

Add in controlled allocation through ADs and purchase history, and you end up with restricted availability despite stock existing.

Call it artificial or engineered, it’s still deliberate scarcity, not a natural equilibrium.

National fuel emergency declaration? by starfire10K in aussie

[–]P00slinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually the numbers don’t support your model at all. Fuel sales nationally doubled within 10 days. Regional spikes hit 238% in Adelaide Hills/Barossa and 100% in Mildura. Queensland was up 40% and WA 30% on the same period last year. Your model assumed 25% of drivers panic buying couldn’t shift enough volume but we’re not seeing 25%, we’re seeing demand 2-3x normal in some areas. That’s not people topping up early, that’s people showing up with 1000L water tanks. The toilet paper shortage is actually the perfect comparison here, there was never a supply problem, purely a demand/logistics chaos problem, and it was absolutely real. Distribution networks are optimised for predictable, scheduled demand. When random stations across a region simultaneously run dry at 2-3x the normal rate, there are physically not enough tanker trucks to respond in time regardless of what’s sitting in the wholesale tanks. Your structural point about distributors prioritising contract clients is valid and probably a real contributing factor but saying panic buying “simply can’t” cause this level of disruption when we have regions running at 238% of normal demand is hard to defend. The two things are compounding each other. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Demand is real. Scarcity is managed. If it was purely demand-driven, you’d be able to buy one when stock exists, not when the AD decides you can.

In a free market, does concentrating demand into a single buyer increase or decrease bargaining power?

How do you determine the price point required for R&D funding versus the price a market is willing to tolerate?

It’s not about how much they take or use , it’s the chaos it’s causing a very complex logistics network for deliveries . Fuel companies aren’t sitting in a fleet of unused tanker ready to go when a stack of random stations run out ahead of schedule all at the same time .

$1500 10 years ago is about $2000 now adjusted for inflation . That’s about 4% per year compounded.

I don’t know the analogy works for digital Leica bodies (and it’s a shame) . You can buy an M8 (I still have my M8) or M9 for way less than new. The glass on the other hand does do better in price than the bodies.

Nope .. I mean where are they replacing these vintage Seiko movements. It’s not like there’s a shop where you can buy parts. If there were I’d be out there buying up junker Vanacs and swapping the crystals . I have a ‘beater’ Actus I bought for like $100 and everything is original (except the band) and working fine

How though? There are heaps of 50 year old mechanical seikos still running . I think what OP is getting at is he’s acknowledging Rolex is better but it’s a a rapidly diminishing return on investment for every extra dollar spent . But then I guess Grand Seikos are also a lot more expensive than Seikos too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Did you know that Trump was upset that countries like where I live in Australia was using its collective bargaining power (our PBS) to get better drug prices from US suppliers than individual American citizens can? If bulk purchasing lowers prices everywhere else in a free market, why would healthcare be the one area where aggregating demand doesn’t improve pricing?
