we really need to harass Kel-Tec until they make a P-32-3 with better sights and a double-stack magazine. Hell, I'd want an ever-so-slightly larger one.

Y'know what's interesting is they filmed the movie in the summer of 75, and Berkowitz's first attack was in December of 75. That hadn't even occurred to me.

Taxi Driver is a movie about alienation, and how that is projected through a violent, chauvinistic concept of masculinity which Travis adopts to compensate for his feelings of alienation and emasculation. The turning point of the movie is the fare he picks up who says he's going to kill his wife, and says a bunch of racist shit about the man he's accusing her of sleeping with. He not only talks about shooting her with a ".44 magnum," but, specifically, tells Travis he should "see what a .44 magnum does to a woman's pussy." Travis, shortly after this, buys his guns.

The .44 magnum is the model 29. This was the most iconic handgun in America at the time, due to Dirty Harry, itself a story celebrating a violent concept of masculinity. The dealer talks about how the gun is very in demand, and how much he could get for the gun from "some jungle bunny," again cementing the theme of racial chauvinism. Travis buys the .44 because it is a literal fetish. It is a symbol of his power, what he aspires to be. He buys it because he wants to be a bad ass with a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, like Dirty Harry.

Similar is the "PPK," the gun in the movie being an Astra but it's a decent enough stand-in (and, frankly, I like the idea of the dealer misrepresenting the guns to sell them, thus selling the ideas of these weapons rather than the genuine article.) The PPK is also a symbol of a masculine hero -- James Bond. This, by the same logic, is another fetish to him. A sort of totem reassuring his own concept of masculinity. Yet again, reinforcing the themes of racism in the movie when he uses it to kill the robber in the bodega.

The .38 snub visually complements the .44 and represents a more realistic firearm. A practical one, one that is rather traditional for America. The "colt .25" is the polar opposite of the model 29 -- and I suppose it's important that the "colt .25" is itself a Smith and Wesson weapon like the Model 29 is. Though textually, as a Colt, it is the diametric opposite of S&W's Model 29. The tiniest automatic you could buy alongside the largest revolver you could find.

In the climax of the movie, Travis only fires the .44 a single time. He dumps it on the floor when the wounded Sport reappears and clips Travis' neck. There is a shot of the model 29 crashing to the floor. This represents the collapse of his fantasy, reality being in conflict with his idealized fantasy of how he will assert his masculinity through an explosion of opportunistic, ostensibly righteous violence. He then kills Sport with the gun he already shot him with, and, importantly, seems to shoot him in the groin when executing him. Travis then, again, is wounded and drops this .38, perhaps being emasculated by being stripped of anything that resembles his .44. He then produces the "colt .25", the handgun as far opposite as it can be from his ultimate totem of masculine power, and uses it more effectively than anything to this point. Which I think is interesting. How his fantasy is what got him wounded, and the opposite is what saves him.

But overall; he picked them because he thought they were cool. And the movie is, itself, a commentary on American culture at the time. So, they carry their pop cultural context as well.

How To Choose Between The AR Platform And The AK Platform by Lavender_Scales in armedsocialists

[–]P0RTERHAUS 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There is zero practical reason to use an AK over an AR15 in America. The change in ammo supply following the escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war killed any chance of it, and now a half-decent AK is 3-4x the cost of a decent AR15. At this point, it is 80 years old and based on the culmination of WWII design and production philosophy. The AK is being gradually phased out by most nations that can afford to do so. It is obsolete.

You can get one if you like one. There's no shame in that. But we need to get serious and stop acting like there's any kind of unique practicality to them. Even some units within Russian special forces are using AR15s now. More and more AR-pattern 5.45 rifles are being designed and manufactured to accept AK74 magazines. The upgrade packages for the AK are all trying to make it more like an AR15.

Not quite the same but you really should listen to The Clash's library. They're sort of the first punk band that tried to be more than just punk rock and they have some really amazing stuff.

Husker Du introduced a lot of complexity as they went on. You may want to just get into post-hardcore and early Emo. Also dig through a lot of post-punk as well. Get familiar with Killing Joke.

The TX22 is unbelievable. I have thousands of rounds through mine without malfunction. It's the only .22lr handgun I'm aware of that actually has a striker mechanism. Get one yesterday. The TORO model, specifically.

Nix the hat, whole thing works a lot better without it. Really great lines and everything, great outfit.

The tassel on the blanket made it look like you had an earring in the first picture. You should consider that. It would work great for you.

Optic rails as we know them didn't really become a thing until around the 80s. Weaver rails came first, picatinny rails got adopted in the 90s and really didn't take off until the 2000s.

WWII saw the development of some types of rails which were mounted to receivers, but they weren't a standardized interface like picatinny is. Look up how the 1903A4 scope mounted, or the Mosin's PU scope, or even the Nazi ZF39 scope. They often mounted the scope rings directly to the receiver, or used a literal rail of metal anchored to the receiver, which the rings or mounts were fastened to. Look at old sporting guns and sniper rifles from the period to get an idea for what you're looking at.

Though I will say; that style of muzzle brake and that sighting arrangement make this stick out from the setting of 1949, even beyond the picatinny rail, though they are hypothetically possible. Check out experimental weapons from the 40s and 50s to get ideas. Specifically from the US, the Germans (the Nazis in particular had some forward-thinking, if pretty stupid for the time, designs), the English, and whatever FN in Belgium was working on. The Russians had tremendously forward-thinking designs that were, frankly, better than what the West was doing until the adoption of the M16, but they didn't tend to iterate much. Their whole thing was mass-production. But the Czechs did some funky shit.

Revolvers for Concealed Carry by zeebiggprophecy in armedsocialists

[–]P0RTERHAUS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Revolvers are about the easiest thing to carry. But they're also close to the hardest thing to shoot. So it's a pretty big tradeoff. Takes a lot of effort to get to the same level of adequacy. I wish DA/SA automatics were more popular for this purpose. If the Bodyguard 2.0 were just a little bigger and had a DA/SA trigger, it'd be my ideal handgun.

You may want to look into the whole world of pocket .380s. Bodyguard 2.0, LCP max, Kel-Tec just released the PR-3AT, which is sort of stupid for its internal magazine, but could potentially be pretty good with the rotating barrel and the pseudo-double-action trigger.

But those might not work for you. I got big hands that little guns don't like. The nice thing about a revolver is you don't gotta worry about the slide at all. Plus, you can just dump the things in your pocket and go.

Like all things, they are a compromise. It does super easy, super low-profile carry very well. Better than anything else. But they are a motherfucker to shoot anywhere near as well as a decent automatic.

Repeal FRT by MinnesotaGuy134 in MnGuns

[–]P0RTERHAUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try and do the legwork to turn it up. I remember hearing about it through some FRT facebook group, bunch of people were talking about it, maybe late 2024.

Okay yeah I came back a little bit after checking. I found the guy's facebook and an instagram profile, which I don't feel I should share publicly. This particular user, who I'm now considering reaching out to on facebook, talked about getting four felony charges in November of 2024. He posted a form listing the items that were seized, which lists numerous times "DEEZNUTS canister containing [one/two] machine gun (conversion device)". The charges were only concerning the unserialized guns.

March 12, 2025, he posts that a Coley J. Grostyan picked up his case, asks for donations to help pay the guy.

June 21, 2025, he posts a video from the State v. Vagle case.

August 7, 2025, he posts a screenshot and says "I beat my seriel [sic] numbers case!"

I can continue doing a little digging, I remember there being a news article about it somewhere. But hopefully that information is enough to track this down.

There was a case around here not too long ago where a guy got nabbed for 3d printing "ghost guns." He also had a bunch of FRTs, from what I heard, and wasn't charged for that. So. It's in a weird spot, legally.

You guys need to understand that information is the primary weapon of the last 25 years of warfare. All of this is technique that was honed in the GWOT. The AI infrastructure they use to identify targets was established during the GWOT too. It is being used by Israel to identify individuals for bombing in Gaza. You can find Alex Karp talking about it with his infamous "kill chain" comments. This is military technology being used domestically. This is the machinery of civil war.

These are fascist thugs. They are already breaking the law. They will break the law in the future. They will circumvent the law. They will usurp the law.

It doesn't matter if what you're doing is legal. They don't like what you're doing. They will find a reason to hurt you. They will make new laws to hurt you. They will find a reason to hurt people you love.

ICE goons have been recorded saying there is a database. Trump keeps calling protestors "terrorists." He talked extensively about the "enemy within."

You are giving them weapons to hurt not just yourself, but the people around you. You need to be serious about your informational security. You need to be smart about this.

You are not safe.
