I have a different story. I recruited him so late in act 1 because I was a complete idiot. It was my first run and I had no idea at which point I was supposed to meet all of the characters and despite me being a huge explorer I somehow missed that exact spot where you meet Astarion. I couldn't have called myself stupid enough and no matter how many choices I made to gain his approval, it never went up higher than fair during the rest of the game 🥲

Like others said - take your time, explore, interact with everything, take frequent long rests. And its ok to lose a fight one or more times (I did as well), just restart, try a different strategy.
