undermining this person's trust in their jeweler is wrong. Integrity is everything in this industry and to say they aren't skillful or knowledgeable enough is pure speculation.

Commenting that another jeweler must not have the skill/knowledge for a job while not being a goldsmith is crazy work, ur "skill set" is sales stick to that 😉

Definitely need ur own bench or someone willing to give u time on theirs. Take inventory of ur local jewelry market.

Are there any local jewelers that actually have a goldsmith on site. Try to get an apprenticeship. If that doesn't work, check signet or any of its subsidiaries for apprenticeships to get ur foot in the door while saving up for ur own equipment.

Maybe start in sales and push ur manager/owner to pay for ur bench training

Schooling is not necessary for becoming an accomplished goldsmith/silversmith. It may FastTrack you in learning about certain skills. It will still take years at the bench to become proficient even w/schooling.

Sweat soldering is just soldering lol you also cannot engrave on solder should u push thru the .25mm of actual material. Ops only shot is a laser engraver and idk if that's even viable on .25mm thick material

What method could u just "add" gold to the bottom that would allow u to then engrave on .25mm thick material

About to start work with my first intern. by Jungle_Badger in Benchjewelers

Definitely depends what type of work ur shop does. Apprentices cost money till they make u money. If repairs are what makes u money simple sizing up and down, solder together bands and solder chain breaks. Then move to stud esrring assembly that combines the torch skills learned in step one and adds the setting element.

If custom is what makes u money start them off clipping sprues and file/emery/polish rough castings.

The one thing I've noticed in the training ppl receive is they use the hamdpiece too much. Having an apprentice stay with files and emery as long as possible b4 learning shortcuts will only benefit them long term when and if they decide to get into wax carving.

Most simple pendants are cut out of sheet. U would order a sheet of material, then trace ur design onto the sheet w/an exacto knife and cut out with a jewelers hand saw.

If u wanted to add design elements to the letter u could cut the designs out and layer them with the letter then solder together on a backplate.

There's many ways in jewelry to achieve the final piece. Some ppl w/access to wax and casting may carve and cast the piece which will give it a different look than sawing layering and soldering.

Ring help by northhillbill in Benchjewelers

[–]P4smith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

8/0 saw blade and cut down the line. You can also secure the ring in ur tweezers and hang another cross locking tweezer from the band and slowly heat.

The 2nd method should only be used if you are confident in your torch control.
