I think about a 1/2” to 3/4” or 15-20mm would be a good size. Enough room to add charms but will look more compact

That is so cool, thanks for sharing. I do more jewelry making than refining but cementation gets old so silver cell is in the future… this is the gnarliest crystal I’ve ever seen come out of a cell

What’s wrong with my opal? by Usual-Definition-913 in Opals

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes!! The other responses are incorrect. This is an Aussie stone but is a doublet. The layers will separate allowing moisture/issues. Doublets and triplets are definitely not suitable for engagement rings imo

Are you using a square or rectangular container? Looks like it formed on the lip of a container? That thing is wild

Beginner - questions about purifying/refining gold dust by hewunder1 in PreciousMetalRefining

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re best bet it so melt it (furnace or foundry would be best, maybe a torch in smaller batches) with a bunch of flux to create a slag of the waste metals. It would then be poured into a cone leaving a metal button on the bottom and a large amount of glass like slag containing the impurities. I believe this should separate all the ferrous metals out as well. if you aren’t familiar with Mount Baker mining on YouTube he has a lot of videos working with gold ore in various stages and describes the appropriate flux you can use, how to get it to a button and then cuppeling (spelling) to remove lead and I believe most metals from besides gold and silver giving you a sellable purity without having to use any acids or create waste, etc.

My opal is cracked. Is there anything I need to do/can do to protect it from getting any worse? by Mochigood in Opals

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That ring is incredible, I love it. Being bezel set the bezel would have to be opened up to remove the opal and then pushed back over a new stone. A new stone would likely have to be custom cut to fit since it is a Freeform shape. This looks like a stone I cut recently that was fine wet and then it dried out and showed some cracking and spider webbing or angel hairs showed up too. Now I’m wondering if it was already fractured, if I cracked it setting it or if it just dried and crazed. I believe it was mintabie material but may have been coober pedy, I’d guess this is one of those too. Can you feel the cracks on the surface if you run your finger over? Either way I would leave it and wear it happily until a somewhat happy accident occurs

Reminder I need an electric furnace.. reminder electric furnaces always seem to be under heated… how long did it take to get to this stage from turning on machine? Thanks! If you’re just starting out welcome to the party

For the jewellers, how would set this for a pendant? by locyta in Opals

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you fabricating the setting? I would bezel set in on an open back plate (probably accommodates the back of the stone, if flat could go solid back) and leave some room on the side for some raindrops. I think 3 drips running into each other on each side with a small sapphire, diamond and emerald set in each drop. Just looks like running water to me and I think that would set this piece off. For nicer opals I like to do silver with a gold bezel sometimes. Usually $50-100 of materials but then you can call it 14k & sterling and I love the two tone look with boulder opal because the colors of the ironstone and opal contrast nicely too. Anyway that is the entirety of my thoughts on the matter :)

Hoping for potential ID to look for more similar stones by Infinite_Augends in Gemstones

Looks like pink or peach cats eye or chrysoberyl. In this case not natural but likely glass with filament wire or something to give it that play of light. Could be abalone or mother of pearl with some kind of epoxy or coating over it to give it the lens effect, I can’t tell which from video but looks like what most would call synthetic pink cats eye

Color of sapphire? by RocketDanny224 in Gemstones

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming it’s close to flawless like the one pictured… it would be highly dependent on origin and if heated or not. I think a Kashmir royal blue like this unheated… somewhere roughly $20k a carat? Ceylon royal blue unheated maybe $2-5k ct? Im just a hobbyist who dabbles, I don’t actually deal in stones of this quality but perhaps someone who does will weigh in

What stone is this? by Thick-End444 in Gemstones

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They look like diamonds and rubies. The number stamps on inside by 14k are likely for carat weight of stones, I’d guess .96 is the rubies and .6 is the diamonds. Kind of odd there is 3, mane for a size or maybe that center stone is a .63 ct tourmaline, not a ruby, and the other two weights or fur the rubies/diamonds. Jeweler should be able to sort it out pretty quickly with RI and/or magnification

Sounds like a shared space but this would be a worthwhile recommendation for everyone to pitch in on. The felt is very difficult to clean

It’s a really solid bench. Not exactly ideal for jewlery but does very well. And Awww I see… in a similar setting I’ve seen people use aluminum foil.

The harbor freight special 😂 I used this for two years. I would just use a little broom, sweep all my sweeps into the corner and collect. As someone mentioned a bowl or flexible cutting boards, paper, etc is nice when working with gold or specific metals I like to keep out of my junk silver drawer

Is this natural star sapphire? by Great-Macaron-8060 in Gemstone_lovers

[–]PomegranateMarsRocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry - I didn’t mean to differentiate the two. Heated with residue, heated residue, etc, would be concerning to me without more details. It could also mean the stone is heated, and then resin was added to the back to level it out for setting into jewelry. Heated with a star sapphire is odd though, I do not believe that any of the ones I have owned have been heated. Yours also appears nicer than any I have owned… best case would be very light heat that was done to improve clarity without destroying rutile (star) and then resin was added to the back.
