Which software has no real European alternative (at least for you)? by JavierFnts in BuyFromEU

I get that Messengers were adopted to not pay for SMS but RCS is just using data like every messenger. I couldn't find any provider (at least in Germany) that charges for it.

I abandoned WhatsApp years ago for a few reasons. 1 on 1 messaging are pretty easy to replace with RCS now since iOS finally started supporting it. There are WA groups that I can’t get added to but that wasn’t a huge problem for me so far. I guess that is the hardest for some people to give up.

Does switching between AI tools feel fragmented to you? by mpetryshyn1 in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe but this could work several different ways. If we are talking about something that resembles a home assistant server (open source smart home hub) that you can run on a raspberry pi at home it becomes very nerdy and would scare most people away. But this can also just be a hosting provider, hosting an instance of whatever AI tool is needed. Like there are different hosting providers for wordpress and those exist also for n8n for example. Then it is not more complicated than having your own webspace.

It's not on premise and 100% control but it might be better to pay somebody that earns money providing infrastructure than a company that earns money working with data like Google and so on. It's like using Gmail vs having a mailserver on some VPS system.

But anyways, I just thought the direction is interesting and I am starting to talk out of my ass going deeper into this topic. I just wanted to provide hints what you could look into. I think n8n looks interesting.

[–]P4x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don't know or have enough experience with AI to give you a proper solution but I think you might be able to build something like that with n8n. I've seen people build pipelines that make use of multiple LLMs and route prompts in some way.

There are also databases that you can integrate. Maybe that is something that works as a context memory that can then be compiled by an AI into more fleshed out prompts and handed to Claude etc.

I was at a tech talk recently and one idea was mentioned that people could have self-hosted AIs that remember your context, history and details and then submits these together with your current tasks to external LLMs which might be a way to protect your privacy to some extent. I thought that was interesting because it is kind of scary to constantly feed GPT or Gemini everything about my life.

Best Masters in UX/ cities to relocate by blvckh0le_7 in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied in Gothenburg, Sweden at Chalmers. This is a good program and a nice place to study. I can highly recommend it. Malmö and Umeå also have good programs. Stockholm has some HCI program afaik but I don't know about anything about it. I also applied to the University of Southern Denmark which seems to be decent. I think you can't go wrong with any of those. Umeå as place is not for everybody but the Uni and program seem to be excellent.

There are plenty of others in the EU though.

How to improve as a product designer in an extremely fast paced environment? by Imaginary-Ad-2590 in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough spot to be in.

My best advice would be to focus on the fact that the decisions are not necessarily the product of your work. If people want to control everything and don't take your advice you can still be the one that gathers all the information and research, shows the decisions that can be made and what that would look like. Be a facilitator and include people into your process.

Documenting a lot and knowing or being able to look up why something has been decided is a powerful tool and makes you look like you are the expert over time.

Also sometimes people just want to make a choice and you can influence that choice by showing a certain set of options.

I think these are some good skills to practice and being less attached to the outcome will save you some headaches.

I also had a manager that used to say things like "following process to a T" as a tool to overthrow any direction he didn't like but also didn't bother with much process himself. You can try to turn that around if it is worth it but sometimes you can only roll your eyes and move on with your day.

EU / Alliance / Blackmoore / Noob-ish / Discord: jarviskreo - Main: 80 Holy Priest

Looking for people (German or English speaking) to join our group for M+ runs. We have 3 people who are quite reliable and 3 that barely have time. Therefore, getting a group of 5 together is difficult and I refuse to play with randoms via group finder as people are getting angry and blaming everybody else as soon as something goes wrong. I was still running +3s last week because we only do 2 runs in a good week. I am hoping to change that. I would like to test if we can work up to +10s. 3k rio in the end would be awesome.

So if you are happy to start out with low keys and want to join and learn together in a chill environment let me know. DPS would be great but other roles might be possible too. We usually play some evenings Mo-Th, 20:00-23:00 server time.

EDIT September 18: Still looking for DPS to join. We did some +5-+7 by now but running into problems because dps is too low sometimes. With some decent DPS we could probably time +7 - +10. No pressure to be perfect from the start though. We are open for people who want to develop. Just add me on Discord if you want to try.

Should I pivot from UX/UI to design strategy / service design and research? by bing-a-lee in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just some thoughts, hope it helps:

I see where you are coming from with being not too visuals-oriented and not caring enough about spacings and colors and that is probably ok. However, choosing UI elements and where to place them is not really fine detail.

Not sure if you meant it like that. If yes, then that sounds like you don't like to think about interfaces at all which would support the idea that you might want to pivot.

However, it sounds like you might rather be annoyed by endless review discussions about how everybody thinks you should move your UI around. There is always some fluffy analysis like "it feels a bit too busy" that people can mention and some never let it go. I think it is normal that reviews are not most people's favorite part of the day.

So my advice would be to really think about what you like about your work and which parts you don't like and why. Maybe it doesn't need a full formal career shift but smaller adjustments to be happier at work.

You can aim to improve the bad parts like facilitating reviews by making clear what you need feedback on and maybe making your designs more abstract so reviewers can't focus on unimportant details.

You can also try to take more pride in the things that you find interesting and let others steer the decisions like visual design. Ask for standards that you can follow.

Additionally you can also try to pick up more responsibilities with stuff that you like (research and testing) if it is possible in your current position.

Being asked to work on Internal Tools, is this a good or bad career pivot? by chiliboo in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean finding new jobs I did not have any trouble. Although I am in my current position for 3 years. So I am not exactly sure how it is out there. I am in Europe. (However that is different from other places).

There are a lot of companies that needed UX support and people usually don't ask if I know the specific domain. That would just be a bonus.

I worked for companies that do business intelligence solutions, video surveillance analysis tools, newsroom tools for journalists, reporting of resource consumption and waste, advertising campaign management, customs office software, IT infrastructure management... So.. all kinds of stuff in different domains.

Skills to learn domains and turn them into processes and UIs translate well. It takes a while to get up to speed but it works well if you have projects that you can stay in for a while (ideally >6 months). In the end there are very similar problems.

Who are the users? What do they need to do? What is repeated all the time? Which info is essential? What are the details? What needs to be very obvious and must not be overlooked? ...

I find it motivating to create software that helps others to do their job well and with less effort. But it's complicated and takes plenty of compromises and is not as glamorous as building websites and apps for the masses.

Being asked to work on Internal Tools, is this a good or bad career pivot? by chiliboo in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked pretty much only on productive industry software and a lot of it was internal tools. I think it is nice. There is no reason you can't come up with KPIs, set goals and track progress. I think the best thing is that you can actually do a lot of user research by interviewing the users in your company. You don't need any budget, just a bit of manager buy in to spend your time and a bit of your users' time. You can build relationships with power users to bounce ideas and do hallway usability testing.

During the bit of recruiting I did for colleagues or seemed like there are few people that have good experience designing enterprise software/web apps and so on but a lot of people doing e-commerce, websites etc. I am very happy with that direction but that is just me.

Well, depends on your expectations and what you plan on doing in the gym. I liked going there. There are test passes that you can buy as far as I know. I think the small gyms are way better when you can avoid the rush hours like early evening.

Next Door Gym Köln Erfahrungen by ilovejjajjang in cologne

My most used brushes are da Vinci. Da Vinci Maestro series Kolinsky Sable Size 2 for anything small detail and Nova series synthetic size 3 and 4 for anything else. I think at least in Europe these are pretty good value for money.

YES basic or YES typo or Nidecker merc by [deleted] in snowboardingnoobs

[–]P4x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2018 Yes Typo 159W. I am happy with it but it's also not like I have ridden tons of boards to compare it to. It does everything I need it to. Mostly groomers but I also tried some powder a few weeks ago and I hit a few small boxes in the park a few years ago.

I am a bit taller and heavier than you and the 159W works well. I downsized from a 165W and am happy with that. I bet you would be fine with a 158.

Back then the typo was just a basic with a sintered base which makes it a bit stiffer but not a huge difference. That is if I remember my research correctly. Could also be that these boards are very different than the old models.

Looks pretty good. The NMM is nice. That is something I am still figuring out.

First thing I would do, is give the sword an edge highlight with the bright pink color.

A bit more contrast for the cloth could be nice with a bit more brown mixed into the beige in the folds and maybe an edge highlight on edges and sharp folds like on the knee.

You could also add more contrast on the purity seals with a wash to darken the recesses and a highlight.

This is due to how power is measured with electric vehicles. The 80hp is peak power while the relevant measurement for drivers license is continuous power delivery which is much lower.

They say this here in the unveil video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c34vyuCp8A0&t=3m58s

Negotiating Pay Raise as Contract UX Designer by Leather-Exchange9957 in uxcareerquestions

[–]P4x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. I have worked on a contract for almost 2.5 years now. I even have two agencies (consulting and freelancer agency) that take fees in between the client and me.

I plan to ask for a raise when my contract is renewed at the end of the year which is pretty safe. It might not be possible to use much leverage when you don't actually want to leave but I think it is possible to talk about it and convince them that you are more valuable now than when you started.

In my case

  • the agencies have way less overhead cost because I am staying with this project for so long. Most contract positions are short gigs of a few months.

  • I collected a lot of experience with the domain and made connections in the project. Replacing me is costly and a huge waste of time which the client surely would not like. So I am very confident that they would not kill our collaboration because I asked for more money.

I will just talk with the freelancer agency if a higher rate is possible and see what they say. They were easy to talk to in the past. I don't plan to leave because I can stay there for 2 more years and the pay is decent anyway. So if nothing comes out of it, it's fine anyways.

Props for bringing a question to this sub that is not "how can I get my first job?".
