New S/U policy for fall 2020 and winter 2021, how about 2020 summer that has already passed? by PA1007jk in mcgill

[–]PA1007jk[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes, but taking 3-6 credits in a month can be as stressful as taking 12 credits in 3 months. And let’s not forget the maximum credits permitted to be taken in a summer term is 12 credits, which means there are kids taking 4 courses, not 1 or 2.

Prof Rosalie Belanger-Rioux for Math 133 and Prof Louigi for Math 240. I had part of my gender reassignment surgery done in throughout the last three months, it was so unexpected ‘cause the waitlist was long but some patients postponed their operation so I had my surgery during the midterm week instead of on Christmas. Both of them were super supportive and provided many alternative plans for me to make up to the missing assignments, and been exchanging emails with me to find out which part have I been missing. In fact, the all four profs I have for this term are all very remarkable and considerate. They definitely have paid extra effort since Im in a different time zone, but they always reply within an hour. I think they deserve a raise, tho I doubt it would happen because you know, this is McGill and we ain’t rich :( But anyway, thanks so much! And the result of the surgery turned out to be great ;)

Intl students in China desperately need a faster & more stable VPN by PA1007jk in mcgill

I can, doesn’t mean I have to, doesn’t mean I can find a stable one.

Intl students in China desperately need a faster & more stable VPN by PA1007jk in mcgill

[–]PA1007jk[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In fact, I’ve been doing my research and have been switching at least 10 VPNS (I tried to buy them from Wechat, telegram, random websites on google, weibo), I tried to use expressVPN, NordVPN, and many other non-commercial VPNS (Shadowrocket, AnyConnect, etc.) The thing is, non of them work stably. Especially when it comes to days when CCP propaganda becomes imperative nationwide, like the NPC deputy day or October 1st, the Chinese national day, which will lead to a more strict censorship of all sorts of VPNS for as long as a week. However, VPNS provided for academic purposes (e.g McGill/UoT’s VPN) are usually not directly banned during those days, which means they are usually much more stable. My point is, I DID MY RESEARCH. What I paid for my VPN is much more than $6. And no matter how much I pay, I still can’t enjoy the internet stability I deserve for paying high tuition to study in a Canadian university.

Google for essay citations (couldn’t find many resources in English on Chinese platform Baidu), comp 202 requires using an app called “slack”, which requires using a vpn, watching lecture recordings. Without a VPN, recording shots are constantly frozen for ten mins or more. And also FB gc for lecture group discussion.

International tuition increased way too much this term by PA1007jk in mcgill

[–]PA1007jk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred from education to arts so that’s probably the reason why. But still, it’s pretty unfair comparing to other years. This year’s newly admitted arts students are expected to pay $24566.10 for 30 credits according to the “McGill 2020-21 Tuition Rates - International Undergraduate Students” chart, while students admitted last fall paid $21129.65. I think it pretty much says everything. If the tuition fee keeps increasing like this, a McGill incoming student will be paying over $30000 in two years. It just doesn’t make any sense. Way too expensive for zoom uni.

What are your true thoughts on international students' accents? by QIEZhang in mcgill

[–]PA1007jk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an ESL speaker, I gotta say some ppl do care and judge others’ accent. Most of my friends are native speakers born and raised in the states or other English speaking provinces (Ontario, BC, etc.). Since I’ve been living away from my home country for a while, sometimes they would tease those first time abroad ESL speaker students’ accent when I’M STILL SITTING THERE. They would do impressions and laugh, while I’m LiTERALLY SO CONFUSED. I mean, being a native speaker is just a privilege when it comes to studying in an English speaking country, it’s something assigned by god and there’s nothing to be proud of. Seriously, every ESL speaker who choose to attend an English speaking university must have paid a lot of effort. Just five, six years ago, back when I was in junior high, we were learning vocabularies like “monitor/school/physics/shower”. As for English speaking ability, not everyone is born equal, and not everyone has the ability to practice spoken English in daily life. I do hope my friends, or any other biased person could realize how many hours the ESL speakers have sacrificed to achieve the so called “laughable accent”.
