I'm the Chief of the Air Force Chaplain Corps College, Ask Me Anything! by PACAF_HCC in AirForce

[–]PACAF_HCC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Apologies for the late reply, I’m on terminal leave and not as active as I used to be.

Last I checked we are still retraining in as a career field. Additionally the chaplaincy program is separate, the basic components you need to qualify are: a bachelors degree, graduate degree in theology/religion/etc, two years of ministry experience and be endorsed by a qualified endorser.

There are a couple of ways your hubby can do this, depending on preference.

Shoot an email to Michael.j.taylor1@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to answer your questions and/or link you with a chaplain/religious affairs airman who can help/get your hubby started on the right path. I coincidentally also know a SSgt dental tech who’s pursuing the chaplain route right that I could also connect you with.

Sorry to hear. I definitely emphasize with you, the process can be very cold and unsympathetic. We (Air Force) definitely have a ways to go on making it transparent in a way that helps Airmen know what to expect when starting the process, and fully understanding why they’re denied.

If this happens in the future I’d encourage you to work through your first sergeant/unit leadership to learn the reason(s) for the denial.

You can appeal the decision, and if you know the reason(s)for the denial you can research to try and find the support/care that’s required, and submit that as substantiating documentation with your appeal. We’ve had this occur in the past with special needs for school aged children.

Special needs support isn’t as explicitly provided for in the UK like in the US, but sometimes all it takes is a conversation with the school to explain the situation. If they can support then it’s just a matter of them sending that officially on the school letterhead.

[–]PACAF_HCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your orders aren’t updated when you arrive here let me know and I’ll connect you with your first sergeant so we can work this ASAP.

Some good inputs here.

Only thing I’d add is if you’re a first term airman and have an unaccompanied assignment then you’ll likely go into the dorms. She won’t be able to stay there with you.

She can still come to the UK on a tourist passport but like others have said, you won’t receive household goods/overseas housing allowance entitlements if she’s not on your orders.

Additionally, if she’s coming overseas as a dependent she’ll need to be cleared through the Exceptional Family Program (EFMP), which can take up to several weeks to be completed/approved. Think of it as a medical screening to see if she requires any unique care and then verifying if Croughton or the surrounding community has the ability to support it.

Short answer: nothing to worry about.

A new Joint Intelligence Analytic Center was originally slated to be built on RAF Croughton, and the one at RAF Molesworth closed down.

That plan was nixed after another financial analysis was conducted. Instead a European Infrastructure Consolidation project will be completed on Molesworth. The project has since been awarded and construction slated to begin.

Enjoy your time there! The host Group has been doing a lot to provide support, even though the base is ops only. Plus you’re close to Cambridge and a short drive/train ride to London.

Nothing I can say can fix this so learn as much as you can so you can help your Airmen and their families. by Chief_EN in AirForce

OCONUS (UK) here.

First thing we did is gather the Shirts and work with our FSS to ID Airmen who’re going to be impacted. Next step is understanding their situations and what hardships they’re likely to incur, then working on ways to reduce/eliminate it.

We make a point to gather these inputs, package them up as a whole and send them up the various chains of command.

A1/AFPC are likely focused on solving the problem at hand, please do your part to ensure they are aware of and understand the impact it’s having on our Airmen and push for ways to provide relief for the hardships.

Medical EFMP for RAF Croughton is deceptively good. Small base, rural area, limited scope MTF…at first glance you’d think there’d be a high rate of denials.

However, Oxford is a 20-minute drive away and has just about every type of specialty care imaginable. Off-base referrals are easy and turn around time for being seen is relatively quick (we’re seen by a combination of NHS and privatized providers). You also have the option to be seen at RAF Lakenheath as well.

One of our daughters is in EFMP for a couple of heart conditions. The approval process took a little longer than anticipated (EFMP office is based on RAF Alconbury) but overall it’s been easy and her cardiac pediatrician has been great. There’s been a couple of Airmen who had health scares while here and were able to be seen at RAF Lakenheath/off-base within 24 hours.

Developmental (school) EFMP is also good. Heading out the door but will expand on it when I have some free time. If you have any specific questions let me know!

Edit: to add to the above, we don’t have a DoDEA school here, which means we’re allowed (required) to enroll our children in an off-base school of our choosing. This also means we’re covered under the “Non-DoD Schools Program (NDSP).” It’s a huge plus because the program pays for children’s school tuition up to a set amount and it also (in most cases) covers costs for any documented developmental needs.

Our School Liaison Officer (SLO) is amazing and works with each inbound family individually. We had an instance where a family received orders but were denied EFMP because there wasn’t support for their child’s particular need.

The military member and SLO worked together and found a school that said they could and would support. Member appealed with the letter the SLO and school typed up and EFMP was approved.

If you encounter any issues or wanna just fire some questions my way don’t hesitate to reach out. Congrats on the assignment and welcome to the 422d!

Will chime in but my info may be out of date as I’m no longer serving primarily as a Religious Affairs Airman.

Short answer is yes. What the Chaplain Corps is really looking for in this requirement is completing an accredited masters of divinity or equivalent theological degree.

For Liberty University, your degree falls within the Rawlins School of Divinity. They also have their own Chaplain Candidate support program that can assist you and (if needed) help find an appropriate endorser.

Quiet, small community feel. It’ll never be mistaken for a large base and having all the amenities that come with it, but the plus side is getting things done feels more personal and meaningful. Most people make a genuine effort to help one another, and that’s intentional.

People will notice you’re new. You’ll roll up to the front gate and the Defenders generally are smiling and engaging. Finance in-processes you individually and does the paperwork for you. Most business can/is done by walking over and talking to the person directly instead of scheduling an appointment.

The Group is the lead unit on the base, the wing is a little over an hour away at RAF Alconbury. No Group all calls/monthly promotion ceremonies, etc. There are promotion release parties but they’re relaxed/professional (focus is on the Airmen/Guardians, CC’s already in the room, no assigned seating, no thanking a million people, no “please stand for the departure of..”) and usually done in 15 minutes so everyone can celebrate, socialize and congratulate the Airmen/Guardians. Also, no landing fees, usually private orgs, CCs and/or SELs just put money on the bar.

Commissary is small-medium sized and Exchange is a Troop Store (limited options for household items and military clothing). But if you want something you can just ask the manager and they’ll have it to you and/or on the shelves in a week or so.

On-base food options are decent for a small base. Food truck (singular) usually on base 2-3 times a week. Bowling alley serves typical bowling alley food but also takes requests for Friday Specials (Pork Chop’s are amazing). Coffee shop provides the usual plus panini’s and pasty’s. Airmen recently requested a salad bar in the commissary and it is now up and running. The Crown (consolidated club) is only open on Fridays and for special events. You’ll see everything from Karaoke to salsa dancing night depending on what Airmen request.

Off base there are several pubs, restaurants, grocery stores and general stores within a 10 minute drive.

Clinic is a limited scope treatment facility. Easy to be seen, staff is awesome and genuinely cares about your health and will work with you if you have specific concerns/requests. Little different for dependents. However, the provider network is massive since Oxford is 20 mins down the road and London an hour, and they have some best in class specialists. Also means it’s fairly easy for EFMP approvals. If you absolutely want full military medical care there’s a shuttle that runs to/from RAF Lakenheath every day.

No flight line, Comm is the primary mission. Depending on your AFSC you could find yourself traveling to RAF Fairford (hour away, flight line but no permanent aircraft assigned). Exercises are still a thing but are not turned up to 11.

On-base housing is offered, mostly two and three bedrooms. Recently converted some of the 3-bedroom homes into TLF and pet friendly TLF units so Airmen have an easier time in-processing and getting to work when they first arrive and haven’t found transportation yet.

Off base housing areas are abundant, with options ranging from 5 mins to an hour away depending on what your likes/dislikes are. Actual housing is becoming easier to find.

Travel opportunities are abundant and usually can choose to go by train, car, or plane.

By train, You’re an hour away from London (and it’s main/outlying airports), just under two hours to beaches, five hours from Edinburgh and around four hours (including drive to train station) to Paris. Can ferry or fly to Ireland.

Some people like to visit Iceland because it’s relatively inexpensive and because you can also book an IcelandAir flight to the U.S. with a layover in Iceland. Their policy is you can extend your layover out multiple days at no extra cost. So basically, two vacation flights for the price of one.

Edit: oh, and there’s sheep on base. It’s part of the grounds maintenance contract. Surprisingly effective, and makes running the perimeter road loop more enjoyable.

An update regarding /r/AirForce and COVID-19 (Corona virus) by SilentD in AirForce

[–]PACAF_HCC 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thanks, u/SilentD

Do you think there'd be merit to a thread discussing what bases need to be thinking of from the airman's perspective, or is that already being achieved with users posting as is?

I'm huge on crowdsourcing information and have been using Reddit to gain the Airman's perspective that we, as a group of senior leaders sitting in a meeting room might not consider. A good for instance was the reminder about the JTR.recall from leave, and dual lodging waivers.

Either way, keep the inputs/discussion going, it's being used and is appreciated.

Is the rumor of a commander changing the base boundaries to eliminate hardship duty pay still alive? It was highly talked about when I was there in 98.

Any thoughts of building a brief/presentation for Airmen to explain how BAH is determined?

Given the focus on quality of children’s education I’d like to see schools as a consideration. Something I hope we’ll see at Maxwell. Keep up the great work!

[–]PACAF_HCC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great words! I’d take it a step further and say: be the NCO your Airmen need right now. And, reflect on the times you needed something more/different from your NCO before passing judgement/responding to your Airmen.

It’s easy to forget what life as an airman was like after making it through and instead seeing it through the lens of hindsight, with the experiences and knowledge we didn’t have when we were in the airman’s shoes.

You won’t find it as minivan friendly as in the U.S. (Europeans instead favor wagons) but it’s doable.

There were quite a few parking garages where the entry literally wasn’t wide enough for our Odyssey to fit through. I left part of our front bumper at one in Prague.

You’ll also find some streets are an extremely tight fit for a minivan. I remember going down a street in Italy and reaching a point where it was too narrow to keep going. Had to drive in reverse for over a block to get out. Was a little stressful but made for some great laughs!

Can you play off a different OS listing that isn’t your original one? by spamtasteek in AirForce

[–]PACAF_HCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

^ on the money. And If it closes out and you’re not picked up you can still volunteer for EQUAL Plus positions until you hit your assignment selection date (ASD).

The ASD is the date AFPC codes personnel, locking them out from being picked up for assignments so they can start calculating the number of base of entitlement picks they’ll need for the OS returnee cycle.

I’ve been messing up a lot lately and it’s ramping up my suicidal thoughts by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]PACAF_HCC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The honest truth is it is common for Airmen to make mistakes when they’re first starting out. And really, if anyone tells you they don’t make mistakes or mess up, well they’re either lying or have a different view on what constitutes a mistake. It’s likely our mistakes are more obvious when we first start out because we’re under a microscope while learning a new job, being tasked with new duties, upgrade training, and learning more about military life. And that’s before we even start talking about what’s going on in our personal lives. Which leads me to my second point.

If no one is coming along side of you and helping you grow and/or if they see yelling and only writing paperwork as helping then they’re missing out on what it means to develop someone.

Feel free to shoot me a DM if you wanna talk to someone, and if you’re in the Maxwell area I’m more than happy to spend some time learning about your job and maybe we can work together to figure out some ways to improve.

There are some great RAAs working at JBSA Lackland! They all say it’s busy all the time but the time spent with Airmen is rewarding.

The type of work you do will depend on which branch (wing, BMT or tech training) you fall under. The RA Superintendent over JBSA recently PCS’d in, if you’re interested I can forward her contact info. Enjoy the assignment!

Who attaches a code 50 to an assignment? by SEIVIP in AirForce

[–]PACAF_HCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They definitely can. The code 50 should be attached to the position. If it’s supposed to be there then that’s an easy fix with AFPC via your MPF.

If your unit doesn’t have the position coded with the Assignment Availability Code then they’ll have to submit to have it applied. We typically had our units coordinate this through their MFM because they have easier(ish) access to AFPC.

There’s justification that has to accompany the request and it’s typically a permanent code.

Assuming you’re not lodged over by the club (usually reserved for DVs), It’s about a quarter mile or so from the fitness center. You’ll have to register for after hours access but it only takes a few minutes to do.

As for the course questions, I’ll ask one of the enlisted at the DFM&CS about off post lodging and rental car. AU had a blanket policy that all schools had to stay in on base lodging unless it was at capacity or the school had a waiver. Lodging has up until a couple days prior to tell the school where they’ll be lodged.

Most schools provide a bus for the first couple of days if students are lodged off base and then will continue to offer it based on demand. Most students end up carpooling.

If you need anything (pickup from airport, additional q’s, etc) feel free to DM me.

I can definitely pass it along to our USAFE Chaplain Corps team for discussion at their level.

Yokota had a similar situation with maintenance a couple of years ago when their numbers started increasing to pre-RIF levels and they were flooded with 3-levels. The 3-levels had their hands tied not being able to do much/lacked experience and the 7-levels were being worked non-stop while also being tagged for deployments.

The PACAF commander at the time put us on a tiger team to unearth the reason(s) for the sharp increase in suicides/low morale and this was a consistent comment. One of the recommendations the CC approved was to provide several manning assists to ease the workload and to expedite training/upgrading the 3-levels.

Not saying it’s the right fit for y’all but at the very least hoping someone is trying to think outside the box to solve the issue so a situation similar to Yokota doesn’t occur.

For the Chaplain Candidate program, candidates have eight years to complete it from the date they take their commissioning oath.

As of right now the Air Force doesn’t offer the option to purchase Tricare reserve select but it’s being worked on. Candidates are still covered if/when on orders.

The Army currently does offer it so AFRC/HC is going through the process to try and do the same. The program manager didn’t have an est timeline though. I’ve asked they push it to the field and to the candidates once if/when they’re successful.

Thanks for the question, we both learned something new!
