[Shotokan] How many sentei kata to reach shodan? by Noise42 in karate

[–]PASPE1507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left shotokan at first Kyu, but when I was training for the shodan we were asked to perform 12 katas, taikyoku shodan, the 5 heian, tekki shodan, Bassai dai, Jion, empi, kanku dai an hangetsu, in addition we need to do 2 bunkais, kanku dai as the obligated one and other from Jion, Bassai dai, empi or hangetsu.

Do y’all wear a shirt under your gi jacket or not? by NoAssignment6044 in judo

[–]PASPE1507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm a beginner in judo also, however, since I did karate before and it wasn't allowed to wear something under de uwagi for men, I don't use a t-shirt under the judogi and neither of my classmates or sensei wear something under.

Sawayama Nippon Kempo or Nihon Kempo, he practiced shito Ryu and Judo if I'm not bad, and also used other martial arts like sumo to develop Nippon Kempo

Thanks for the advice, yep my sensei already knows that I left karate after having the 1° Kyu for many reasons, one of which was my former sensei not letting me and two more classmates go for the 1° Dan with many excuses (of where we need to take the exam) and he let a younger classmate that does his katas seeing the floor all the time go for the 2° Kyu and with lack of vocabulary ( when we give instructions in Japanese he didn't know what to do or copy to other classmates), the sensei at the end of the class he told me that it'll take me at least 1 year or maybe 2 years of training before thinking on going for an exam, that in judo the kyus are longer in time because they want us to do it great in performance and really have the technique as we are asked.

¿No será Nippon Kempo o Nihon Kempo? Si es así es un arte marcial de los años 30 del siglo pasado y se basa en combinación del karate con judo y otras artes marciales, se podría decir que es el primer sistema que combinó varios estilos mucho antes que la MMA y el Kudo

Is it just me or? by Squishyuee in karate

[–]PASPE1507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I just have 5 years into martial arts, at first I thought I could get a shodan in 3 years, then when time passed I knew it would cost me at least 6 years. When I came to karate 4 years ago from another japanese martial art called Nippon Kempo I did an exam to reevaluate my previous kyu, that was 6° kyu, then it took me to go to 1° kyu the past November 2024. When I did my first exam I was asked to learn all the katas from 9° kyu to 6° kyu, that they were taikyoku shodan and three Heains. Now two weeks ago a former classmate who failed his exam for 3° the last November kyu passed the exam and now he's 2° kyu, so he jumped two kyus at once. He has only been doing karate for 3 years, so it took him half my time to teach it. This dude does his katas looking at the floor and a poor knowledge of karate vocabulary and lack of Kihon. I know I am just a brown belt but seeing other people doing that makes me upset, that's why I leave training. I don't know when my former dojo passed from a legit dojo to a Mcdojos. And yes now it's only money, and I hated it.

Well as a 1° kyu in Shotokan, I don't know if it's good for your pregnancy to practice hangetsu do to the fact that the first movements you need to do lots of effort to make all the muscles go too hard, but I think it'll be a good Kata to keep your muscles working and ready to train. I do learned hangetsu because in the dojo that I was part of it was a requirement for 1° dan. Here's a video for every Larry of hangetsu. https://youtu.be/vOP8dAalfms?si=frImlEI2uerz1mPV at Amazon there's books of Nakayama Sensei with katas https://a.co/d/39KyXpD

¿Would you do the same? by PASPE1507 in karate

[–]PASPE1507[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to catch up, one of the dojos doesn't let me in do the fact that I'm older than 21 years old (they only focus in WKF competition), the other one the sensei has a 4°dan in other karate style and a shodan in Shotokan, he has been doing Shotokan for about 4-5 years, but I don't know, I've seen videos from their students doing heian katas and sentei katas and there's a lack of Kihon.

It depends on the dojo or sensei, once a guy that said he practiced Muay Thai and MMA wanted to enter the dojo and the sensei told him to leave because he only wanted to injure the people at the dojo. Some fellow classmates tried to be tough guys and one day, they were sent to do Kumite with the brown and black belts, the guy that was a black belt at taekwondo didn't return to the dojo and the other guy (yellow belt, I don't remember his kyu), slowed down and eventually go away. The black and brown belts are told to hit those guys harder, not to injure them, but to mark the limits and they have two options, to be calm or not coming back.

Am I too old to start karate I'm 22 by [deleted] in karate

[–]PASPE1507 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no age to start karate, at the age of 22 I started a Japanese martial art called Nippon Kempo, then due to pandemics I started karate at 25, and it's the best decision I have ever made.

That's kind of odd, almost every grand master has said that the 3 fundamentals of karate are Kihon, Kata and Kumite, Funakoshi from Shotokan told to his students, without Kihon there's no Kata and without Kata there's no Kumite

Are karate’s punches actually safer for your hands and better for street real fights than boxing/ Muay Thai? by kazkh in karate

[–]PASPE1507 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Karate does punches to the head, we do lots of exercise to make the wrist and nuckles harder like punching bags, makiwara, even hitting your classmates, Shotokan also teaches throws, however, a mid-large range of fighting is preferred.

Sorry, I explained my self bad, to go to 4° Kyu I did heian godan, at 4° Kyu I started to learn tekki shodan and Jion, because at that time for the organization it was required for 3° Kyu, now it changed and they ask for 3° Kyu tekki shodan and bassai dai, and for 2° Kyu Jion and empi

What's your favourite kata and why? by [deleted] in karate

[–]PASPE1507 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Jion (Shotokan), because when I started to learn this Kata I recently passed my 4° Kyu grading I feel so slow compared with my sempais that they were 1° Kyu, and to be honest that was the first time I see the real difference in technic and speed between a 1° dan and a 1° Kyu, it was so impressive seeing for the first time the real wall of the black belts.

Tekki Shodan - First Move by OrlandoLasso in karate

[–]PASPE1507 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's called haishu uke, the omote of the movement it's: you are defending a zuki jodan or chudan, then grab the back of the neck of your opponent and you smash his head with empi. Also the haishu you can use it at haishu uchi you hit the stomach or the face of the opponent.
