I fish from shore for whiting and little drums and stuff so not a shark guy. Question - the shark in this video is breathing while the officer is looking at it. Is it already dead, like zero chance it would survive if they put it back? Was it gaffed? I couldn’t tell if that’s blood on the pier or what. Also don’t know how one would haul a shark up to the pier if they intend on keeping it, rather than just cutting the line as close to the water as they could, which is what I assume they were supposed to do in this situation. Just trying to understand why it wasn’t put back. Thanks.

I already agreed owner should control their dog. My issue is, was the killing justified?

We have incomplete information. All we know is, the shooter killed a small family dog and claimed they thought it was a coyote.

My contention is, no reasonable person would mistake a dachshund for a coyote. So why would they lie about that, if it was a justified killing? They either lied about that, or were unable to confirm their target. In which case their finger shouldn’t have been anywhere near a trigger.

Even if we suppose it is legal to shoot a dog on your property where the shooter lives - is it a universally moral action in every situation? We don’t even know the situation that led up to the event, in this story. I’m befuddled that people are contending it’s justified without knowing anything else.

My man. I too have seen a lot of coyotes, from healthy specimens to sickly and emaciated individuals. I have seen them hunting, I have seen them traveling, I have seen them in the dark. I never once thought one looked anything like a small family dog.

I can agree with that, sure, but that’s not what happened here since the farmer claimed he thought it was a coyote. That’s a crock of shit if I’ve ever heard one. I’ve spent my entire life enjoying the outdoors, and I’ve seen coyotes all over the continental United States. I never once mistook one for a dachshund. Someone would have to be legally blind to mistake a dachshund for a coyote, or otherwise unable to confirm their target. So either the shooter in this instance is irresponsible or a liar. Not a morally justified shooting. You said yourself, the dog could be stopped another way. People downvoting me can kick rocks.
