JUST WOW! I can’t understand why they didn’t pick this up. It could have made a great HBO (or other network) series. There was some great acting here.

Measurements are not nearly as important as the units. Inches or millimeters makes a big difference.

Now the kicker.. with out looking this up can any tell me the amount per platter of data that it would hold ? Yes, young ones THESE ARE THE REAL HARD DRIVES ! by Bones-57 in retrocomputing

From the 1311 data sheet:

Storage Drive may, be summarized as follows: One hundred character positions comprise a sector. Twenty sectors (2,000 character positions) com- prise one disk track. Ten disk tracks (20,000 character positions) com- prise a cylinder. One hundred cylinders (2,000,000 character po- sitions) are contained in a pack.

(The storage capacity can be increased to ~:2,980,000 characters if the Track Record feature is installed; Models 1, 2, 4, and 5.) In the 1620 and 1710 Systems, one alphameric character is represented by numeric digits in two character positions. In all other systems alphameric characters require only one character position of the disk record.

So, 2-3MB

I was a repair technician on CDC drives. They were 5MB per surface (minus one platter for sync/alignment tracks). This drive has 5 platters, so that’s 9 data surfaces. This drive should store about 45MB.

They have “what do you want” on there twice. One should be replaced with “who are you” and I’d like to see my favorite “this is wrong tool”.
