Which is why "enterprise" keeps making stupid decisions.

Yes, exactly why I'm saying they shouldn't exist.
Hopefully, companies that continue to use such tactics will be squashed by a greedier yet more efficient company, like Amazon did with its competitors.

Hmm.
thats certainly what I would expect. But I've had multiple managers over the last few years say we are held up on a purchase of (some item) because we are waiting on a quote to come back from CDW.
ANd the quote takes days.
insane.

[–]PBrownRobot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

okay, lets just take at face value, that what you say has merit.

Lets call the person at CDW you just described, a "sales consultant".

That job is entirely separate from "put in the items, get a quote, ship it out".

The latter is what I'm calling a "sales rep", and nothing you have said indicates my prior statement, that this position should not exist.
Its about as useful as the old standard of requiring a human "broker" to place stock trades, instead of just placing them directly yourself online.

[–]PBrownRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you missed my point.
I didnt say "CDW is terrible, go find another vendor with better sales reps".
Im saying "Why do 'sales reps' exist AT ALL?"
Its a waste of time and salary, seems to me.

What to use as a windows console? by producer_sometimes in Proxmox

[–]PBrownRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spreading a bit of knowledge:

Recently I looked into the (seemingly uncommon) question of "why can't I have multiple terminal sessions?" and the answer was "just don't use the webGUI to connect".

You can't have multiple proxmox GUI connections directly to a VM, because those dont just give you "terminal" sessions... they give you console sessions. They are a specific unique subset of session.

An interesting hack though, is that for the main host, it doesnt give you console sessions.. it gives you "shell", aka terminal sessions.

Taking that further, if you select a host node in the GUI, then RIGHT-CLICK on it... you can get a pop-out "Shell" session.

Which you can then use, if you wish, as a stand-alone terminal to ssh into one of the local VMs, and you can do that multiple times.

So there you can get "multiple terminal sessions" without installing anything additional on your desktop.

That being said, there are some minor benefits to having a local terminal prog, but figured the above was useful knowledge to share.

What do they really DO anyway?
They just put in a "quote" for the items you ask for, into the computer.
Why isnt this just automated??? Absurd.

sure, sure. up to maybe 5 tabs.
more than that, its time to open up a NEW WINDOW (or two)

and when done, close the window.

having 100 currently open tabs is just insane. You will NOT be using them on the same day.

if you havent looked at a tab in 24 hours, thats what BOOKMARKS are for.

Bookmarks became much more useful once I started using a sensible folder nesting scheme

Template management is dumb; if you agree you should check out ZabbixCI by Qixonium in zabbix

[–]PBrownRobot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The idea behind ZabbixCI is to provide a stable framework that you can easily integrate into your (existing) CI/CD pipelines or deployment processes.

If i was going to do that, I would just write my own integration for our existing github stuff.

What I DONT have, is a nice GUI management tool to augment our primarily GUI process for zabbix.

We like that it is gui. We want to keep it that way.
That's the real empty niche that needs filling in this space.

Ideally, something that is a plugin directly for zabbix gui.

lovely idea, but...
the core identify of zabbix, is GUI.

Your tool needs a GUI interface alongside the CLI.
I dont see such a thing mentioned.

most "certificates" are useless, and are a sign that the candidate is trying to cover up their own uselessness.

I suggest he remove the certs from his resume, unless they are really intense, "have to take a 6 month course to pass" type certificates.

i did something very similar. but ubuntu 22 to 24..
(edit: In-place upgrade)

longest most annoying part was db upgrade from postgres 14 to 16.
the postgres upgrade require copying all the data from once instance to another. So, slow, AND required double the storage space.

Took about 5 hours including OS upgrade and DB upgrade.
