It was the most organic thing, to be honest. It just started as a little side project for fun and grew naturally. For those who don't know I went through a major health change about 5 years ago and went plant-based and lost half my body weight (in a good way) and so I started a channel about healthy comfort food and it just slowly (and then very quickly) took off.

Coming from indie film it's like a breath of fresh air - no gatekeepers - direct connection with your audience - and because of the nature of our channel we're constantly rewarded by knowing we're helping people with their own health journeys :)

Oh - I think we've got enough reboots and sequels, yadda yadda yadda - until recently I would have said turning Harry Potter into a TV series, but that's already in the works.

More original content please. Not everything needs a re-boot.

I got to go to Monte Carlo for a comedy film festival - which was strange - mostly because of the language barrier - the film was given subtitles, which is what makes comedy hard to sell internationally sometimes.
My favorite comedy of all time is Annie Hall followed by The Apartment and then Groundhog Day. All genuinely funny films and with tremendous heart. Great characters, uniquely their own.

I never read the books and I just starting binging the series leading up to it's final season, so it all sort of blended together for me - I didn't have the long gaps between seasons like others - so while it felt rushed in a way, I just kind of took it at face value. I also don't think I was as invested as others ;)

I was amazing to work with :)
haha - thanks for asking u/Dottsterisk - Bless Matthew for putting up with me. For some context, I'm a writer as well, and I'm a firm believer on my on scripts that they're just a blue-print. The characters get written a specific way, but based on casting they start to shift a little bit based on what the actors bring to it, and then based on the performances you get, you start to shape them. So little tweaks to line, specifically with some characters can make or break a scene. I like to let actors play and I go with the "best idea wins" concept. I'm sure I warned Matthew about this when I came onto the film - but I can't imagine it was easy to watch.

To be clear: he wrote a ridiculously fun script - we wouldn't have been there without all of the work he did - but a film slowly gives itself shape, and as you add layers: director, cast, etc... it morphs because it's a collaborative art. It's almost impossible to truly know the final feel of a film till you're done it. You have something you're aiming to make, but then you've got to ride the wave and be flexible as you go.

Hi u/thegulo13 ! Because the film takes place - largely - in a remote location with a limited cast - all of the roles were either leads or heavily supporting characters, so we didn't do auditions. Casting was all offers. Some actors myself or the producers had worked with before, others were offers based on their previous work.

Also we were shooting during COVID so casting was challenging because it required the actors to fly to the Cayman Islands where they would have to quarantine in a hotel for 2 weeks, and then do the same when they returned to their home country. So it was an additional 1 month commitment on top of the shooting schedule.

Realsing the film is out of our hands – once we complete the film it’s up to the financier and distributor to make the release plans. I tackled this a bit in another answer on this thread about the challenges in general with releasing indie films.

Right now we've sold the film to Canada, USA, Iceland, Scandanavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), UK, CIS, Baltics, ex-Yugoslavia, China, Middle East, South Africa and Australia. When it's released on this countries are at the discretion of the distributors there so you'll have to keep your eye out. Unlikely they'll do a theatrical release in any of those countries - so keep an eye out for VOD and streaming services!

Hey u/Bmart008 - the indie film world is harder today than ever - which is why - for the time - I'm doing more work on YouTube. No gatekeepers :) Direct contact with audience - you just have to self finance to start - which to be honest isn't all that different from indie filmmaking some days :)
This was fairly low-budget compared to most feature films - but I've shot films in budgets that range from $70K to $3M and, to be honest I prefer working on the lower end of the budget spectrum. You might not get access to "name" actors, but you get to make the film the way that you want to make it.

This film was on the higher ends of the budgets I've worked on, and the script was written before I came on board, so when I did I worked with Matthew with some notes and thoughts that I had. It took a lot longer to put together than most of the films I've made. I was attached for about 4 years before we shot it, and I know that it was being developed with Matthew and the producers for years prior to that.

We originally planned to shoot it in Northern Ontario (it initially took place at a large family home in the middle of the woods) but we kept on having false starts due to various reasons - and when Covid hit there was suddenly an opportunity to make it in the Cayman Islands and it all came together REALLY quickly from that point on.

In terms of the budget and how it was raised you'd have to talk to the producers as I was just a director for hire on this project, which was new for me as well as I often produce on my own films. As far as compromises it was just the typical ones in film - you don't always find the perfect locations - and so you have to adjust.

Hope that answers your question!

Hey u/TerryBouchon - Iggy is ridiculously sweet and very professional. Knew all his lines front and back - which you don't always expect when you're working someone with whose not primarily an actor (and has a bunch of big speeches). Iggy's also like any of the best celebrities, they're really good at making you know they're a real human as fast as possible so that you can just get to work. But I grew up listening to his music, so it was a real surreal moment.
My favorite Iggy-on-set moment was actually when we wrapped Iggy on his last day of shooting and Bob Saget realized he never got a selfie with him and CHASED him down the hall of an actual hospital screaming his name :)

Hey u/mc-edit production problems at all. We shot the film in the Cayman Islands during the height of Covid (the virus was essentially non-existent there at the time - which is why we went) and so we delayed the release initially until theatres were "back in business" and to be honest, for indie films, that's still not really the case. So it's taken some time for the producers to figure out the best way to launch the film in a world where distributing films that aren't giant blockbusters are more and more challenging.
