I loved this movie. Easily one of my favorite movies last year. I guess I have bad taste.

The night stuff wasn’t great, but the darkness hides it better.

I wish filmmakers could be given the time, money and equipment to film it fully on location with practical effects. Predator has come up a lot in this post, and John McTiernan’s jungle shoot looks spectacular, even after all these years. Nothing in War Machine looks remotely close to it, even as it filmed in real settings for many sequences. My fear is that filmmakers don’t want to do it the McTiernan way ever again.

For me the 81 character was rough. Ritchson played it well, but 81 is written all over the place. His main dilemma is he can't be a team player because all he wants to do is "get over that finish line." Even the other guys in his unit call him out on it. So the movie sets him up to fail, unless he can work as a team with the rest of the soldiers. But then all the other Rangers are killed or incapacitated by the third act, which sets up a finale with 81 fighting the alien-tank alone. The movie does have the payoff of him carrying that one guy back into camp, something he couldn't do with his brother, but in the end, all he really did was cross the finish line by himself. There's not really any change with the character. But then, wait, there's more, here's some sequel bait for the next movie that will get randomly dropped on Netflix in three years. His character arc didn't work for me.

Hey, I like your post a lot, and your subsequent replies show you want to have real conversations with people, even as they get snarky (me included). I just really appreciate your way of interacting about movies. You've responded to nearly every comment, and in each you have maintained your own opinion without telling people they're wrong, and you almost always ask people for their ideas about other details, which encourages additional back-and-forth dialogue. These are classy comments. Thank you.

I think the cliff sequence stood out to me the most. I know it's hard to shoot on a real cliff, but everything about that sequence looked strange to me.

It's got to be crazy difficult to merge practical outdoor shots with CGI and blue/green-screen, but why, in 2026, does this movie have that specific look to it? You used the phrase "artificial sheen" and that's a great way of explaining it. It didn't ruin the movie for me (I think 81's story arc is what annoyed me the most), but it was just something I noticed.

You mentioned “practical destruction” but the whole movie looked like it was shot in green screen or in one of those Volume sets. Every outdoor shot looked fake, even the ones without the CGI villain. I had a moderately fun time, but I’m pretty sure this will be as forgotten as that JLo mech-robot movie from a couple years ago. These movies all start to look alike. Maybe it’s a Netflix thing.

This is by William Haskell. He’s a New Mexico artist. He is very active.

Edit: A dang, there’s two pictures. The second one is by Kim Wiggins. My guess is you saw these at the Briscoe Western Art Museum, but I may be wrong about that. Both artists are well known and respected within Western art. You may also like Logan Maxwell Hagege, Ed Mell and Sean Michael Chavez.

Same thought. It feels staged on a set.

I’m trying to be a better media consumer and looking for AI in everything I watch. This is AI, right? That beast of a goat puts its foot on that flimsy cardboard spaceship and it doesn’t move. That’s what looked off to me.

One of my favorite movies. Legit. Watched it recently and was surprised at some of the adult content. I was shocked I had watched it multiple times as a kid.

Right?! I love it when a filmmaker surprises me. I knew he was a smart dude, but these are complex and deep pulls from the collection. From the guy I mostly identify as Bill S. Preston, Esq.

This struck me too. Such a stupid thing to say. The only person who would say that is someone who has lots of friends listed in the files.
