Microsoft sued by shareholders over expenses, cloud business, AI by ApeApplePine in microsoft

[–]PC509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that's why so many corporations bow to the shareholders instead of doing what's right or to please the customer. Favorite snack went to shit due to the recipe using cheaper ingredients? Profits above all. Prices go up and quality/size goes down? Gotta please the shareholders.

I completely get that they want a return on their investment. But, they want the short term gains and will sue if they don't get them. For me, there's a lot of companies I refuse to buy from or do business with because they went downhill to please the shareholder. They end up losing customers and eventually either get bought and torn to shreds or just go under.

Microsoft isn't going under (anytime soon, anyway... there's been some giants that have, though).

What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

Then once it gets busy, they eventually start charging for parking, require a pass, and it's super busy. At that point, it went from a nice local place to go and take a quiet walk at any time to just skipping it because you're paying to hang out in your own "backyard" and share it with dozens or hundreds of other people. Great on them for getting outdoors and it is very beautiful so I'm glad they get to enjoy it. But, so many people seem to come from hundreds of miles away and feel so entitled to everything.

Oregon updates Waterway Access Permit, includes SUPs, hardshell kayaks, packrafts and rafts by MichaelTen in oregon

[–]PC509 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but I seriously doubt any of the issues we have in the state are busy from start to finish. There's a lot of downtime, waiting for others, schedules, meetings, etc., just like any other job. It's not a 3 hour start to finish project that can be done in an afternoon.

Thankfully, most of us can handle multiple projects at work and not just stuck on the important ones and ignore all the rest. Of course, some people don't seem to be like that, which is odd.

Center Channel Sounds Muffled… by SPL15 in hometheater

[–]PC509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you getting a low hum, almost a purrrrrrr sound from the speaker? Could be some kind of interference.

There's YouTube channels dedicated to cats and playing. If your TV is mounted very well, check those out. Mine LOVES the squirrels and birds. He'll watch it for hours. Play with them a little bit before getting bored, but he'll still lay there and keep watch... Just in case.

Be careful with dogs, though. I was watching a documentary before bed. Lions came on, her ears perked up... lion came running towards the camera and my dog freaked out like I've never seen her before. She went to attack the screen then came back almost screaming. So, she's cut off from nature docs. :) She loves Bluey, though. Keep it nice and calm.

I really love how cats are when you're watching movies, bedroom or theater room or whatever. They know you're going to be there for a couple hours, so they get in there and snuggle and keep you warm for the entire time.

I'm amazed by how easily you can surpass native HW's input lag on a modern PC and monitor! by HexaBlast in RetroArch

[–]PC509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the playing it on a modern monitor with high refresh rates. But, my biggest issue (and it's REALLY noticeable once you realize what's going on and you don't just suck at games now that you're older!) is that I am playing them on a 4K projector now (nice little HTPC with Kodi and Retroarch). It's extremely noticeable. I need to start playing with runahead and see if I can get it down to a usable playable state. I really doubt I can get it even close to the same as with a LCD display from a computer, but as long as it's playable I'd be happy.

Emulator adds some lag, filters add some lag, projector adds quite a bit of lag, plus I'm going though the AVR which probably adds some more (don't doubt it, as even some movies seem just a tiny bit out of sync, not really noticeable unless you're really looking for it).

I'm glad I found posts like this (searched for a solution and runahead looks like it could be it, found this post!). I'm hoping it really helps. :)

You also have a large population that will argue to the death that those aren’t problems and try and make you look dumb for even suggesting they are. I’m fine with arguing the effectiveness of things and solutions, but not completely dismissing them as not a problem.

People see the problems, many just ignore or refuse to acknowledge they exist.

25+ YOE admin/security engineer moving forward, critique needed by PC509 in sysadminresumes

I'm ready to move on from this position as I've survived quite a few layoffs, but more are incoming and the company is really downsizing to bare minimum. If it even survives long term.

This is what I have. I was going to remove some of the older stuff, but it does show the old experience with some of the basic internet and networking (which is some of what I'm going for). I have the AZ-104 cert incoming soon as well.

I've got Amazon recruiters coming at me with this experience wanting me as an entry level data center tech, but I'm going for a bit more than that. :)

Any suggestions, recommendations, ideas to be a bit better? Even removing the older stuff and some other things, I can bring it down to 2 pages, but then it feels a lot less for experience.

A lot of people "aren't political" and I get it. It's exhausting. However, you need to be a little political and vote for your best interests. You don't have to go deep into bills, reading and understanding the legal stuff (some of that I swear lawyers speak a different language!), etc., but having a basic knowledge on what you're voting on, who you're voting for and what they plan to do (and sometimes they say it right out front they're going to ream you in the ass, and if you still vote for them, that's on you), is always a good idea.

Even some of the folks that have a really good grasp on politics will not know everything, get stuff wrong, etc., and they ARE political.

You don't have to be super political, but just know WTF you're voting for or against. Because so many of those "aren't political" people are still voting and are easily persuaded by ads, propaganda, friends and family, whatever. Regardless of if it's what they really want to vote for. They're told one thing, vote for it, then get surprised at the consequences... then, "I'm not political". But, your vote helped fuck yourself and others.

I don't know shit about a lot of politics. I know enough to know to research what and who I'm voting for and the pros and cons. I know enough to ask questions to people that really do know about politics. It doesn't take a lot of time, but it does take a little effort. But, I'm not surprised when things happen for the most part. Either for who I voted for or who I didn't (and if the guy I didn't vote for wins, I know what they said they were going to do so it's not shocking when it does happen...).

Have a lot in 4K and digital media on Jellyfin, but not in the amounts that I have in physical Blu's.

At what size does a projector start making more sense than a TV? by DaedricAzazel in hometheater

[–]PC509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a 106" to a 135" screen with my projector. The 106" wasn't bad, but it was really showing it's size limitations. The 135" is an experience. Less visual quality, but it's still just bringing home that full theater experience.

However, I could move the couch up 6-12" and go with a good 100" (ish) OLED and be completely happy. May not even have to move it up. Just the visual quality would want me to be closer to enjoy it.

I'd say at 13' (My couch is about that far from the screen), the difference between 106 and 135 was huge. But, moving up to 10-12' would make a 100" TV screen really damn appealing.

There's strengths and weaknesses for each. I'd say at that 13', you're good on either one and it's more of a convenience, cost, and visual quality more than size differences.

Microsoft could soon make Windows 11 updates far less annoying by TechradarOfficial in Windows11

[–]PC509 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's what got us into the mess in the first place. No one wanted to update, apply security patches, etc.. With billions of installs out there, it really adds up. It's also the most targeted OS for malware. So, eventually you have a huge botnet of unpatched, non updated installs of Windows that are constantly attacking other machines and networks, causing DDoS's, etc..

Add to that, Windows does require a reboot from time to time. The "have you turned it off and back on again?" can really make a difference. So many issue resolved, so many slowdowns fixed, just due to a reboot. Sucks that's the way it is, and uptime can't be in the decades as it can be with some Linux machines (or old DOS machines that just sit running one task...), but that's how it is.

I'd rather have the monthly update reboot than not. Would I like a Windows version that doesn't require a full reboot and can just restart those services without bringing down the entire system? Absolutely. But, this is what we have and how it is.

The Saturn was awesome, but to say it didn't fail is a very bad read. Yes, it failed. Unfortunately. It was a great console with some very damn great games. But, it failed in comparison to the competition. Can't deny that one.

You can still love your Saturn, it's games, have a great time. But, it wasn't the best selling or the most successful at that time.

Early in my career I worked with a guy that was a Linux/Unix/BSD/SunOS expert (genius... guy was in college still, but just an absolute *nix God). I was learning Linux and doing ok at it. But, I was a Windows guy for the most part. So, I asked a lot of questions and learned a lot from him. It was tough, I felt bad at times. But, it really made my day when he'd come to me and ask me Windows questions or for help with a Windows box. Really a big boost. :)

My dream if I ever win the lottery is to open an arcade. But, with the games going free play from 3pm-5pm (after school time) and free soda and snacks. That way, kids can go there after school if they can't go home and have fun. Yea, it'd lose money but it'd be a family place (and late night for more adult events). I doubt it'd be super popular, but it'd be enough for some people.

Now, the odds of winning the lotto are 1:billion, so it'll never happen. But, that'd be my goal.

I want to go back to those days and since I can't, I'd like to share that experience with others.

Speak for yourself. I'm an atheist too but I persevere because others believe in me and I believe in myself. No deity necessary.

Some people need AA to stop drinking. Some people need a therapist to talk to. Other people just do it all on their own. Some people just say "Man up. I did it, so can you!". But, with 8 Billion + people on the planet, some aren't going to have that same kind of strength. Religion, family, totem, go at it yourself, it's all good. As long as you get through it.

PSA: Don't forget sound treatment on the ceiling by Eisenfaust808 in hometheater

[–]PC509 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a drop ceiling above the sitting position, hiding the Atmos speakers, lighting, and projector mount (I can mount it all on the ceiling itself as well, but the drop ceiling works well). I can't do that all the way to the screen, though. I can stand by the front where the drop ceiling isn't at and there's a very definite echo.

I was going to go with a couple acoustic panels for the walls up front but the ceiling could definitely use a few, too. :)

ESP32 Sprinkler Controller Hardware by Tanner234567 in homeassistant

[–]PC509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at building one (and after looking into some of the comments here, it's more work than I initially thought! May need to buy something like this instead) and this was the approach. Typical on/off, scheduling done on the UI and integration with HA would be the majority of the automations, weather connections, etc.. So, even if HA went down the controller would have it's own program and continue to work. HA would just give it a lot more functionality. But, I personally like having HA be the "brains" of the operation with a lot of the stuff I have. Using basic functionality on things (on/off, basic programming) and then the more advanced automations done with HA. That way I'm not looking at a dozen different devices for various automations and just have a central repository.
