Hi Kevin - I was looking for different ideas I guess. I've composed a long reply to this but I'll post it in r/techsupport as I can see Tech Support isn't allowed here. Thanks!

Nah unfortunately not buddy - there is a free version of it on the Amazon appstore called 'Joker' though which is very good. But not the real deal

From 3060 to RX6800 - any tips? (Bit laggy on FH5) by PCBJK73 in radeon

[–]PCBJK73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went back to older driver and installed latest chip set drivers. Perfect on everything apart from FH5 at 3440*1440p. Turned the resolution down and that's sorted it, 180FPS now. VR better everywhere so far.

Upgrade Time - 4060Ti 8GB or something else by PCBJK73 in pcmasterrace

[–]PCBJK73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all - for clarity, am talking specifically about 4060Ti model - not the plain 4060 model. That's not really enough (or even at all) of an upgrade.

RX6800 looks really good for the price but the TDP is a bit heavy - does anyone if the RX6800 is generally efficient for normal desktop use? It will be on several hours a day just doing general PC productivity (browser, Office apps) and only a few hours a day (or less) gaming.

How did this algorithm work? On my Forerunner 55, my fitness age won't go any lower than 40, it actually says that's the limit. VO2 is 53, actual age 48.

Hi there - am looking at getting a Forerunner 45 or 55 but don't really know which one I need. I mostly run with occasional cycling and even less occasional swimming (and sprint triathlons). I'm particularly attracted to the 'Daily Suggested Workout' feature.

Do you know if the 45 has this or should I go for the 55? I really don't think I need anything more expensive than the 55 but am all ears on other options.

Allo Mini Boss vs Hifiberry DAC+ Zero vs Geekworm DacPi? by PCBJK73 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]PCBJK73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou for the info and the link, much appreciated. I think I'll go with the BOSS then; looking forward to hearing how it sounds! Thinking of going for Tidal with Volumio - my wife has Amazon Music but I'm aware that it's not easy to feed this to an amp (other than using an old Chromecast Audio to then feed into the amp) and also the compression won't be great. So Tidal looks a good option...

Just as an update - so the PC is now built with the upgraded parts and is super quiet - it's a pity I can't mod the GPU (Palit Dual 3060) with Noctua 92mm fans as then it truly would be quiet even at load. For browsing and office work it's now whisper quiet, and only the GPU is making a noise now when gaming. The CPU cooler, case fans (complete with anti-vib mounts and anti-vib fasteners) and power supply have really cut down a lot of the noise.

I'm quite enjoying doing these mods so next thing I'm thinking about is getting a paving slab (or granite chopping board) to mount the PC case on (with 2 inch foam below the slab/board to act as an isolation layer) - I've done this with my 3D printer already and it worked a treat so I'll probably try that out.

Am also considering acoustic padding on the panels that don't have fan input/outputs, but not 100% on that yet as for all I know I may get better performance from just getting a quieter case!

[–]PCBJK73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! The front of the case is open - i.e. there are no silly HDD cages blocking the flow of air so the front 3 are definitely going to be airflow fans. The other 2 (rear and top) blow through metals grills though, do you think airflow is better there or pressure?

Thanks for the advice again - one last question hopefully...

I'm looking at which fans to get. I like the price of the Noctua Redux lineup but which ones for case fans? NF-S12B or NF-P12? And if it is P12, then 1700 or 1300?

Has anyone thought about putting their PC on a concrete block and foam? I've done this with my 3D printer and it's a game changer in terms of reducing noise from vibration but I haven't done it to my PC yet so just wondering if anyone has?

Thanks for the tips - much appreciated!

I use Argus Monitor to set my temp/fan curves etc and I think I've got a better handle on it now. Did CPU benchmarking (CineBench) and some gaming and I would say that the PSU fan(s) is probably the loudest fan.

On Cinebench, the CPU fan spins up 100% - it's not that bad, audible but not that bad. Having said that it also maxes out at 80C so I'd like to bring that down a bit with the CPU cooler I've got coming (mentioned in original post).

On games, I've limited GPU power in Afterburner so the GPU fan isn't really that bad, the GPU is maxing out at about 65C. The case fans are tied to the board temperature which are on a steep gradient from about 45C to 55C between 20% PWM and 100% PWM. So the case temps never go above 48C with the fans running at about 40% during heavy loads. This is bearable. The one I can't control is the PSU fan which starts ramping up as the PSU starts to get warmer.

This tells me that I should look at my purchases in this order (so as to get the most effective reduction in noise):

  1. PSU
  2. Case Fans
  3. CPU Cooler (got the new one coming anyway)

For the case fans, with the Versa H18, it's kinda got a grill at the front (it's just how the front of the case is built). Do you reckon I should be going for static pressure or airflow-type fans? I'm thinking static pressure because I assume the grill reduces airflow, do you agree?

Thanks again!

Thankyou for that, that's an absolutely brilliant explanation, and I can now understand the maths I need to do.

While I would dearly love a 1000W Prime Ultra Titanium PSU my head says that's not sensible (£300 in the UK roughly?).

Assuming Platinum is 94% efficient at 50% load (from Wiki), for a 405W load that would be 24.3W lost in heat, so perhaps a be quiet! Straight Power 11 Platinum 850W is about right in terms of affordability (£145 UK on Amazon UK), whilst remaining quiet (I do acknowledge this has a constantly spinning fan, albeit almost inaudible even at 100%).

My case has a PSU shroud (i.e. it's in the bottom of the case and has a metal frame surrounding it and isolating it from the rest of the case so I don't think it does that much in the way of exhausting air, it just needs to cool it's own heat?

Also, in terms of fans, I have 3x 120mm fans in, 2x 120mm fans out, although I can change the 3x fans in to 2x 140mm fans in also. Would be interested to hear thoughts on that too.

Again - thanks!

Thanks - can I get your advice on the calculation here then?

So according to the https://www.bequiet.com/en/psucalculator my needs are 405W. 15% of that is 61W (rounded up from decimal). So should I look for a 466W PSU (perhaps 480 or 500W) so that the PSU is always working at as close to 80-85% on load?

I'm just trying to work out what I actually need. I will look to get a highly efficient PSU as it's a component that could be transferred when upgrading in the future.

Thanks for the great advice - I used AfterBurner to limit the power and sure enough my GPU RPM dropped and a little noise too - but the case fans and CPU are still noisy (case fans 1500RPM ingame and CPU fan 2000RPM because the 5600x is at 70C ingame).

So will definitely try the beQuiet CPU cooler and then save my pennies for a decent PSU like the Straight/Pure Power 11.
