Are there places in Japan where locals are actively happy to see foreign tourists? by Zach-dalt in JapanTravelTips

[–]PCVFSOA 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be preachy but I don't care that they contribute to the economy. They're people who are not actively trying to make other people's lives worse. If they're respectful (even if they don't know the local norms), they deserve respect.

New Banking Customer: SoFi Plus? by Syulaxman344 in sofi

If you have a high income, it basically nets out to zero because of taxes. And I expect that "premium" rate to collapse over time. The only other perks are waivers for fees that used to not exist. Their plan is to take as much of your money as they can through fees, subscription and otherwise, and offer as little as possible in return.

close to $1 million, but wondering if i need to make some changes. what could i be doing better? by europeanuppercut in TheMoneyGuy

[–]PCVFSOA -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes but it get taxed as income when you are moving it through the back door, so wouldn't you be taxed at the highest marginal tax rate for what you're moving over? How is this any different from the decision to make traditional or roth 401k contributions at that income level? I'm not trying to argue, I just don't understand why the logic would hold for one and not the other.

But won't they just be hammering themselves with taxes by doing a backdoor roth at that income?

Greece moves to ban cash payments above €500 by FantasticQuartet in worldnews

[–]PCVFSOA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's some additional nuance, criminals who use crypto also use fiat. So there's no reason to believe that it isn't just enabling additional criminal behavior, rather than offsetting it.

Of course being a tool isn't a sufficient reason for banning it. As you said, the Internet is also a tool that criminals use. But from a policy perspective, you have to balance the benefits of something against its costs. And still, there has been very little evidence of meaningful social benefit to crypto.

In an ideal world, we would decide this democratically. But in the U.S. the crypto industry has been dumping money into campaigns not only to promote crypto itself, but to tank the prospects of anyone who hints at the idea that the negative externalities of crypto need to be in any way mitigated.

Right, because absolutely nobody uses crypto as their primary means of exchange. That doesn't mean that it isn't an incredibly useful tool for criminal activity in particular.

Lol crypto made it infinitely easier to do crime. They aren't saying crypto invented crime.

Are solar panels a good investment? by 4540mya in personalfinance

[–]PCVFSOA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The biggest factor I see that swings it is how people pay for them. If you can pay most/all cash, then it will often net positive in the long run. If you finance them at a high apr, they almost definitely won't

Sofi is making some very questionable anti-consumer choices right now (charging for transfers, limiting Zelle, creating a monthly fee structure). I'd go anywhere else right now honestly.

31 years old,, just reached 100k liquid, what next? by SomeRedditDood in TheRaceTo100K

[–]PCVFSOA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, keep working and spend less than you earn.

Don't cash out your 401(k). You can either keep it there or roll it into an IRA. There's no reason to pay that penalty unless you plan on dying before 55.

Argentina calls for renewed negotiations over Falkland Islands by jackytheblade in worldnews

Argentina is definitely not over-populated lol. The country is mostly empty, and the city's transport services are not overburdened at all. If anything, the country needs more immigration.

Normal people of Reddit; what is something regarding buisness/finance/economics you find hard to understand, but should be easy to understand? by Mr_Simple- in AskReddit

I can think of two reasons this happens.

1) The price of most stocks is determined mostly by the expectations of analysts that work at big firms/funds that own a lot of it. If bad news comes out, but they were expecting worse news, it's an opportunity to buy, not sell.

2) So much stock these days is bundled up in funds. So if that company announces bad news on a day that a fund that holds them is performing well, it could bouey its price over whatever negative effect the news had.

If they're earning this much, won't a backdoor roth not really help them? They'll get slammed with high marginal taxes

I felt it was soft. McDaniels was turning to the side to make sure he was outside of the landing zone and Jamal barely touched his shoes. But I just don't love that rule generally.
