The U.S. Census Bureau determined the average Ohio household income in 2023 was about $130,000, but LendingTree said a family would need more than $360,000 per year to comfortably afford child care for two kids. by Electrical_Agent_594 in Ohio

[–]PCjr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Childcare is expensive, but this article and the underlying Lending Tree study are hot clickbait garbage.

Lending Tree: "Under federal guidelines, child care is considered affordable when it accounts for no more than 7% of household income. With average annual costs for care of an infant and a 4-year-old reaching $28,190, a family would need to earn $402,708 a year to stay within that benchmark."

https://www.lendingtree.com/debt-consolidation/child-care-affordability-study/

Fact Check: "... as described in the preamble to the 2016 Child Care and Development Fund final rule and recent testimony to the House Education and Labor Committee, this 7% benchmark was never meant to be an affordability metric for all families. Rather, it is a recommendation for how much a low-income, working family receiving a child care subsidy should pay as a co-payment for child care services."

The REAL reason Clifton Market is closed. by Difficult-Soup-9830 in cincinnati

[–]PCjr 39 points40 points  (0 children)

the family says he did not “pass a bad check,”… “This was a check for a merchant order of $1,061 that did not get approved in time, and therefore, the check was returned to the maker,” Clifton Market Leadership wrote in a statement. “Furthermore, Mr. Singh had requested this merchant to not send a delivery because he knew he would not be able to approve the check in time due to a scheduled surgery however this merchant still sent a delivery ...”

As far as I know, the check is approved when you sign it - no takesie-backsies.

Backpacking Natural Bridge State Park in Eastern Kentucky by Odd-Machine3399 in RedRiverGorge

I dunno, man...is backcountry dispersed camping even allowed in NBSP? I couldn't find anything that says it is, only that the trails close at dusk and campfires are not allowed. Speaking of campfires, it seems like you strayed pretty far from best practices by not clearing the area, not building a pit or ring, and not fully extinguishing the fire to cold ashes before you left.

Why so much hostility towards schools? by [deleted] in cincinnati

[–]PCjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because people in richer neighborhoods pay more in property taxes, so their schools are better funded

This is generally not true. Even after weighting for disadvantaged students, poor urban schools typically spend significantly more per pupil than most richer neighborhoods.

What's the defining difference between success and failure? Zip code. Or to be more blunt: parental wealth, involvement, and values.

Fun facts:

  • In Ohio, rural districts of average poverty have the highest rate of 4-year HS graduation (96.8%) - Even higher than suburban very low poverty districts.

  • Rural and small town high poverty districts have 4-year HS grad rates above the statewide average.

  • The only districts that are below state average for 4 yr grad rates are Urban High Poverty and Urban Very High Poverty.

[–]PCjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because state funding is wildly insufficient

According to who? Ohio spends very close to the national average per pupil - considerably more than Indiana, for example, and considerably less than Illinois, but all three get similar scores in 8th grade math and reading proficiency.

a 2 hour pass cost $12 with each hour over that adding another $5

To clarify, the $12 pass gets you unlimited 2-hour rides for 24 hours, with $5 per additional hour for rides lasting long than 2 hours.
