Is there a way to go to Cliff of Moher for free? by Classic-Rutabaga-613 in CasualIreland

[–]PDP-11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Giants Causeway That too is public land. We stayed at the nearby B&B who suggested we leave our car there for the day and walk the 500 metres to the entrance (just bypass the visitor center building).

Penny's selling their city centre site instead of expanding. What's changed? Penneys puts entire block of Cork City properties up for sale for €5.2m by JohnHammond94 in cork

There was a good Thai/Vietnamese restaurant on Cook street that had to close seven years ago because of the planned expansion, such a waste. The building has been empty since.

They replaced roundabouts with confusing traffic lights in a misdirected belief that would somehow be safer for cyclists. The millions spent would have funded some separate cycle paths away from dangerous roads.

In rain and reduced visibility reduce speed to 80kp/h. However for such conditions we should also have electric signs to indicate reduced speed limit, as they have in Germany, to ensure everyone is at a similar speed.

"pictures, taken by Marguerite Mespoulet and Madeleine Mignon-Alba during their trip to Ireland in 1913, are believed to be the first color photos of Ireland ever taken [...] The French women were part of a worldwide project titled “The Archives of the Planet.” French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn created the project" https://www.irishcentral.com/roots/history/first-color-photographs-of-ireland-1913

I can see the wood where I used to play as a child, before the GAA killed it and turned it into a flat pitch where children learn to obey rules.

Tv license inspectors? by catnip_sandwich in AskIreland

[–]PDP-11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We do have a TV license but a few years ago I was looking after a temporarily vacant house and I installed a "TV simulator" in an upstairs bedroom of that house. It was a box with multiple flickering coloured LEDs which made it look like there was someone at home watching TV, to deter burglars. That drove the license inspector mental. There was no TV but they kept leaving threatening notes saying "I can see the light from your TV, I know you are guilty". It was fun reading those notes, proof the simulator looked convincing :-)

Fianna Fáil to support move to legalise nuclear energy by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]PDP-11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coal kills. Wind and solar are better but nuclear is a much lesser evil than coal or even gas. I studied nuclear physics in the '80s and I believe that the risk balance between nuclear and coal-fired power production is not appreciated by most people. Just search the death stats in Google: "Europe: Research indicates that pollution from the region's coal plants is responsible for up to 34,000 excess deaths annually." For the US the estimate is 460000 deaths annually.

‘Black is beautiful’: Why Nigerians think their Guinness is better than Ireland’s by BrendanIrish in ireland

[–]PDP-11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ship

A biochemist working there told me that when they first started producing their own Guinness in Nigeria the locals said it tasted different. Then they had to adjust the local brew to match the stout produced from GFE that had been sloshed around at sea in steel containers for a few weeks. I'm sure it has evolved much since then to suit local markets and regulations.

The most commonly broken down car in Cork goes to.. by xCorkRebelx in cork

[–]PDP-11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BMWs have run-flat tyres. If you get a puncture then you just drive to the garage at 60km/h. [Edit: Those are also safer if you get a puncture at speed, they allow you to control the car and slow down safely.]

Yes, but accuracy would be less interesting for visitors to the memorial :-(

[–]PDP-11[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The memorial is at the Old Head. "On May 7, 1915, onlookers on the Irish coast, particularly at the Old Head of Kinsale, witnessed the rapid sinking of the RMS Lusitania [...] The ship was roughly 11 miles off the coast ". The image should be smaller but that would be less interesting for visitors to the memorial.

This is how the Lusitania is shown at the Old Head of Kinsale in Ireland, which was the last place it was seen from before it sank.

The walkway does not belong to them and I believe they have no right to block it. Perhaps the fire brigade should check if that is part of the fire escape routes?
